  • But, as we have seen posted on here, there are passages in the bible that call for violence. The hypothetical group above is just interpreting the bible in a way you (and others) disagree with. But that group stills sees themselves as following Christianity. Who are you to tell them they aren't Christian?

  • I'm the guy that realizes when Christianity begin which is with the New Covenant.

(quite possibly even later than that, after His crucifixion)

What I am NOT is is an evangelistic fundamentalist zealot. What I am also not is a bitter little anti Christian activist.

    Christianity refers to Jesus Christ.

  • stop and think what we've posted in the past, woodpecker.

    The New Testament.

  • Well I imagine that there are many people that claim to be Christians, but aren't. And for reasons other than violence.

What would Jesus say about war? Our current state of health care compared to other developed countries? Our second class treatment of different minorities over the decades?

But basically you're saying that just because people claim to be something, doesn't mean they are. And even though there are many ways to interpret religious books, there apparently is a "right way".

There's many ways to interpret a physics book too, at least if your name is Ben Carson.

People have fought for thousands of years over what the correct interpretation/belief etc. is. Seems like we'll never get past it.

  • physics? that makes no sense. But you got another emotional knee jerk in at Carson.

I thought it was a good opportunity to get a shot in, but Carson has a different interpretation of the 2nd law of thermodynamics than what's presented in the textbooks, because it doesn't fit his beliefs.

Yes there is. I just called my friend a fundamentalist pastor and talk for a while about this. It's pretty simple, Jesus implored his followers to be christ-like.

He pointed out punishment or damnation for our sins will come at judgment time.

That is part of the new will of God as opposed to the old will, the Old Testament.

He believes that homosexuality is a sin but that sin will be judged by God. Is that lying, cheating, stealing, fornicating and adultery are also sins and carry the same penalties as homosexuality. These sins can be forgiven but only through the blood of Christ.

That means if you have fucked around on your wife or cheated on your taxes or lied to your boss. Or coveted your neighbor's wife or his house or his car.

As for your question, I would assume Jesus would want us to help the poor who could not help themselves. He would probably expect those who could to do so.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by second class citizens but I believe Jesus said to give unto Caesar what is Caesar's. That means he was not political and probably wouldn't make a ruling on gay marriage if that's what you want.

In the Old Testament God called for immediate punishment but after the New Covenant when we were all given a path toward salvation through the blood of Jesus Christ. Not so in the Old Testament.

An example of giving unto Caesar what is Caesar's the pastor told me he been working with a convicted murderer who will spend the rest of his life in prison. If he accepts Jesus Christ as his Savior repents his sins he will be clean in the eyes of the Lord and will have salvation. The prison sentence is the law of man. That he has to deal with on earth.

  • Alright, so a few comments:

Taking the assumption that Jesus believes homosexuality is a sin, based on your posts, people have no right to protest it. Making a law against something because it is a sin is no basis at all, because God will judge the gays. Basically it removes all "gays is sin" arguments from the anti gay marriage crowd (not that they were good arguments to begin with).

On healthcare, unless you're a complete ass that thinks every person on hard times is directly their own doing, it sounds like you're saying Jesus would want us to help them out.

The last point doesn't have to be about gays. What about black people and the history of racism in this country? Go back far enough and there were groups that thought blacks were a lesser race, but called themselves Christian. Sounds like they weren't Christian.

I just find the whole thing funny. Often politically conservative people use Jesus as a measuring stick, when Jesus seems like he'd be a pretty liberal dude. Of course, if you pick and choose your passages, and interpret how you see fit, you can make him be whatever.

    I chuckled.

    I completely agree too

  • Woodpecker - you did a nice, rare job of posting more than one sentence...

but it was baloney. It takes away the "all gays is sin"....

that's laughable. You don't understand what you are trying to argue against,

and your arguments are suffering badly.

When the Bible says "Judge not lest ye be judged"... well, that refers to

    salvation.

God created Adam and EVE. Note that "Eve" is a female name.

Man-Woman. So, understanding that marriage is between a man and a woman....

    anything else is a perversion.

But, it isn't up to us to say or believe that all gays go to hell. We aren't judges on that.

However, it's one thing to live and let live, even though some pair up pervertedly...

and another to demand that perversion be accepted, and complied with, by

    those who abhor the perversion.

    Try doing this in order:

    Learn...

    Think...

    Post.

    What textbooks? From Wikipedia

(I had to google that one)

In thermodynamics, entropy (usual symbol S) is a measure of the number of specific ways in which athermodynamic system may be arranged, commonly understood as a measure of disorder.

However, irreversible processes increase the combined entropy of the system and its environment.

Understanding the role of thermodynamic entropy in various processes requires an understanding of how and why that information changes as the system evolves from its initial to its final condition. It is often said that entropy is an expression of the disorder, or randomness of a system, or of our lack of information about it

    and from Factcheck.org

"Moving outward to the solar system scale, the situation is the same. The increasing entropy is not violated by the formation of planets, stars and comets due to arrive in 70 years. All the factors that go into the formation of these celestial bodies work to increase disorder rather than decrease it. As Greene told us: “The formation of a star is an entropically increasing phenomenon. It is not decreasing the amount of disorder, it is increasing the amount of disorder, even though it looks so darn ordered relative to, say, the swirling gas cloud from which it emerged.”

  • So, according to Factcheck again... Ben Carson said this:

Carson, Sept. 22: Now you’re saying, there’s a Big Bang, a big explosion, and our solar system and our universe come into perfect alignment. Now I said you also believe in the second law of thermodynamics, entropy, right? “Yeah.” And I said, that states that things move toward a state of disorganization, right? “Yeah.” I said, so, how is there a Big Bang and instead of things moving toward disorganization they become perfectly organized to the point where we can predict 70 years hence when a comet is coming. How does that work? “Well. We don’t understand everything.”

  • I don't really wanna get into it, but the increasing entropy is actually measurable through cosmic microwave background radiation

Basically the big bang theory does not violate the laws of physics as we know them - but Ben Carson fabricates scientific laws because the big bang theory disagrees with his faith.

Ben Carson is a very talented and smart guy for sure, but being talented in one field doesn't directly translate to many other fields - where he's clearly lacking a bit.

  • So, the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics deals with random disorder.

So, Greene says the formation of a star increases the disorder.

So, again, given the magnificent order of the universe, the fascinating

miracle of the existence of biological life...

    the human brain....

that is the opposite of "random" and "disorder".

So, how does that incredible order of the universe, and

all life on our planet, including the amazing human brain.....

happen, given the INCREASE or STABILITY of disorder?

Think about that. And yes, it contradicts the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics.

  • No, no, no. you are missing the point. Using the big bang theory to explain, via random disorder...

the existence of life on earth, and the workings of the universe, and the human brain...

    is a contradiction.

Given the law that says the disorder stays the same, or INCREASES in disorder...

    makes our existence impossible.

there is no fabrication of laws. He just knows what he's talking about,

    and you don't. That's all...

No doubt there is much hypocrisy in this world. And those who judge others will answer to the Lord on judgement day. But remember even though you are fixated on homosexuality many things that we all do on a daily basis are considered sin. Lying cheating stealing coveting etcetera etcetera. And judging your fellow man.

On healthcare, unless you're a complete ass that thinks every person on hard times is directly their own doing, it sounds like you're saying Jesus would want us to help them out.

He would indeed. And there are many many Christian charities across the United States and the world. He would probably look kindly on those who advanced those efforts. Your point? Jesus was not involved in politics. That's probably what got him killed.

The last point doesn't have to be about gays. What about black people and the history of racism in this country? Go back far enough and there were groups that thought blacks were a lesser race, but called themselves Christian. Sounds like they weren't Christian.

That's true. Remember what I said about the hipocrisy?

And again he didn't meddle in politics.

Salvation comes from the Lord not from man no matter how rich you are before you die.

And calling yourself a Christian without adhering to the rules Jesus set down won't help you on judgement day.

It is ironic that bitter atheists often turn to this type of argument demanding that Jesus must also be liberal. Why is that?

The guy next door who fucks around on his wife will have to answer for that just as members of the Westboro Baptist Church.

Nobody's picking and choosing. The rules are what they are. Many will be called to account for their actions.

This is something I'm not even going to argue. I trust all the explanations and measurements from the physicists over what Carson thinks.

Earth and humans are less than a spec of dust when talking about a system the scale of the universe.

  • Then I win by default. I thought I made a valid point - the miracle of life

    doesn't fly with entropy.

  • I don't see physicists arguing with Carson. What's up with that jump to conclusion?

I'll take a neurosurgeon's understanding of life and the human brain over

    a phsyicist all the time.

Because, even the expert brain scientists don't fully understand how brains work.

    http://www.livescience.com/49113-do-scientists-understand-the-human-brain-video.html

    http://physics.about.com/od/QuantumConsciousness/f/IsConsciousnessQuantum.htm

and, from the beginning of the human race, and life on earth.... even now we fully don't understand the

    human brain.

And this is supposed to have just flippity'randomswitchedty by a big bang ?

nah. Read the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, and about entropy - and Ben Carson is exactly correct.
