Jonathan Paul Manziel

He's a career backup at best.
He sees things too late and he has no touch.
He's too damn short and useless in the pocket.
Start McCown, he's better.

1& 2 you talking about McCown? 3- debatable.
Zombo said:
No you don't.
You play your best QB.
You guys will see this better when you stop thinking of Johnny as a first round pick and start thinking of him as a career backup.
We don't "have to" play him. He's not that special. I think the staff knows that. I think people around the league now that.
Zombo
When you going to figure out Z that McCown's current record of 1-5, and a career 18-38 record blows dead worms? At that pace, by all means, keep trotting him out so he can go 2-10. And I'm dead serious about that. I'm not putting all the onus of those losses on Josh, but I said elsewhere he doesn't pass the eye test of being a guy who can win games consistently. At this point- it doesn't matter who plays qb for the Browns- as they're just flat out not good enough. Manziel has room to improve- McCown is what he is- a 36 year old backup qb, that happens to be efficient in losing games. Pettine has to figure out he has to play to his qbs strengths- Manziel will never be a pure pocket passer- so when in the second half Mike forced him to do so- he got killed. Way to go Mike.
Josh mccown standing in the pocket is a good way to settle it because there's a good chance josh mccown will die.
Josh McCown starting against the Bengals would have been a very short experiment. They would have carted him off the field before the first quarter was over. The Bungle pass rush was fierce. Didn't I note McCown is the worst qb in the NFL in taking sacks? Duly note that Z if you want to keep playing McCown- he's a hit or two away from winding up on season ending IR.
Dalton looked good last night because they didn't ask him to do anything besides hand off, throw quick slants, and pick up a few yards when it all fell apart. Sadly, that's all it took to beat us.
And around three TD passes to a wide open Eiffert- that our guys couldn't cover.
Let me add a special demerit to our #94 on defense for getting a taunting penalty, and then lined up offsides, gifting the Bengals a TD. Way to go.

Did Manziel pass that eye test last night? Because, to me, it seemed like our offense did a little better with McCown at the helm than Manziel. You put whatever players give you the best chance to win on the field - regardless of where they are from, what they did prior, or what plans you have for them.
I'm not knocking Manziel's performance in the slightest. I was wholly impressed with most of his first half, aside from some common mistakes that many rookies (because he basically still is) experience. The second half stalling can be firmly attributed to our "adjustments" by Pettine. Head scratching halftime comments that were followed by head scratching calls in the second half.
I think the video of Faulk ( I believe that's who it was) may have gotten directly to the problem - is Pettine trying to actually win games or just trying to mold Manziel into the QB he wants? If it's the former, that's a poor effort and he may be over his head. If it's the latter, that's a ticket to getting your ass shipped out of the NFL quick, fast and in a hurry.

griffin to gruden = manziel to pettine.
easy enough to figure out right?

The truth is that it's hard to judge Johnny based on last night. Browns were missing 6 starters, I think? Bengals look like a top-5 NFL team. The fact that Cleveland was in the game as long as they were is a miracle.
To judge any backup qb based on last night's scenario is unfair. Judge him compared to his start against cincy last year. The difference is night and day. Johnny threw accurately (at least 4 drops), scrambled for positive plays many times, threw the ball away when he needed to, had no turnovers or fumbles.
He is still 22, still learning, still getting better. Don't expect perfection, expect improvement within reason. Last night, playing a really good team with so many good starters out, was about as good as you could expect from Johnny. To expect more from a 22-yr-old in his 5th game is unrealistic and unfair.
To base the outcome of the rest of his career on that game is dumb. He should keep starting, see how he does, get some answers now. What the hell is there to lose?

I think Johnny certainly passed my "eye test" at least in the first half. I'd have to go back and see how many passes that hit receivers in the hands got dropped. We were playing an undefeated team on the road after all. He flat out has better escapability than McCown- I honestly believe with the pressure the Bengal D was putting on the pocket, McCown wouldn't have lasted out the game intact. BTW, special congrats to #94 Starks for almost single-handedly gifting the Bengals a TD.
Though I disagree with Z about Manziel's ceiling, let's say he's right, he's a career backup. We have two that aren't starter material then. Does it really matter at this point 2-7 which one plays? We're going to have a top 10 pick in 2016- guaranteed, and I'll take all comers in betting on that one. So we had damn better figure out if there's enough potential in Johnny to not take yet another qb in that draft. Josh McCown is not the answer in 2016- and I've come to the conclusion trotting him out there to take another pounding isn't the answer in the final 7 games this year either. Manziel isn't going to learn anything holding a clipboard watching Josh get the crap beat out of him.
This from NFL.com
"That's a nice sentiment (playing McCown) when you're a franchise that is either an established winner or on the rise. It doesn't make much sense when you're a team that selected Manziel in the first round of last year's draft and has started him in all of four games now. McCown has been a nice story in Cleveland, as he has put up solid numbers (11 touchdowns and four interceptions) for a last-place team. The reality, however, is that he's a 36-year-old journeyman who is never going to help the Browns be anything more than what they are today."
Need I mention at this point Haslam's silence is deafening? I have to wonder what he's thinking about this current shit show.

It wasn't unfair and there's no excuses.
Whoever the starting quarterback is, whether McCown or Manziel, are subject to the same level of evaluation and scrutiny.
I'm in favor of evaluating Manziel for the back 7 though, that'll give us more than enough to know who we have.

Agreed....Im pretty certain he is NOT the guy....but the season is shot, so lets end the Johnny back-up era once and for all....
Start him the rest of the way and then make a decision...yes or no.... because it would be REALLY BAD to let this garbage spill into yet another season.....

Reasons are not excuses. There is an overarching reason that the Bengals won. They are a much better team, especially last night with so many Browns starters out.
Johnny isn't paid to catch passes or make tackles. McCown would have lost last night, too. But to not start Johnny now, at 2-7, with nothing to lose, would be a terrible decision (glad you agree) . I say this knowing full well Johnny might not be the guy, but at least try to find out one way or the other.

It is how JM addresses the last negative that will determine his future. The three plays I mention are the only three I know are valid. I suspect that there are more. I suspect Pet already knows there are more.
JM was good and certainly better than a year ago by a mile, but still not anywhere good enough.
Think thats all pretty fair.
Would you keep playing him even if Josh is healthy at this point?
Would you keep playing him even if Josh is healthy at this point?
As long as we are not mathematically eliminated, I go with the best QB on our roster.
Dalton looked good last night because they didn't ask him to do anything besides hand off, throw quick slants, and pick up a few yards when it all fell apart. Sadly, that's all it took to beat us.
Yet there was a moment, a series when he looked rattled. I think it was their 3 & Out, 2nd series. hen we started the next series with an earth-shaking tackle... and a taunting call...
-
I thought Pettine sounded like an idiot, even borderline like an a**hole when he made those comments about Manziel. Couldn't even give him credit...
and to "Tour," You don't get credit for cleaning up the mess you created; however, but you ONLY get credit for the end results, no matter how you achieve them. Pettine's hubris and "little man syndrome" are going to cost him a job...

If you say missing starters was a contributing reason as to why the Bengals beat us... that is one thing.
But once you cross into it being a reason it is "hard to judge" a player, you are in the excuse business. Either that or your sole basis for QB evaluation is W/L... in which case you are no evaluator.

Dammit Tour, mathematically eliminated, or for all practical intents and purposes eliminated? 7-0 to have a remote prayer- really? With the Jets, Raiders, and Chargers all having wild card tiebreakers on us? That they would even entertain trading Joe Thomas tells me all I need to know about what Farmer is thinking.
If Pettine thinks (possibly) winning two more games with McCown is going to save his job- it won't. He's responsible for that disaster of a defense I'm seeing week after week.

If Pettine starts Josh the rest of the year and they go winless, McCown will lose his job.
If Pettine starts Johnny the rest of the year and they go winless, Manziel & Pettine will be out of a job.
One or two of these guys won't be back next year.

a bad draft pick that has issues on and off the field does not lay in the lap of the head coach.
lord knows that some of the supporters of the browns that frequent this site know more than professionals hired by supposed professionals to lead this team.
hell, let's just have haslam go door to door and hire 'mr. dog-bone hat' to guide this team out of the ground.

This is the biggest pussy thread of all time.
Pettine is right anyway. If you can't make plays in the pocket you can't be an NFL QB.

Gotta agree....right there.....
The only "running QB's who have ever been quality NFL players(and there are only a few) all were adept at playing IN the pocket and only broke containment as a last resort.....all the rest flashed, then faded.....
One thing about staying in the pocket is that you can see the whole field......run right and you lose 60-75% of your options immediately....and if you have poor field vision(which I believe Manziel does) then you see even less.....
23,
Hubris? Starting to see that tossed Pet's way a bit and I simply do not see it. AS for credit giving, I remember the first words out of his mouth being along the lines of "He's made some plays...". Those don't count?
Lastly, I said "Hero points" for a reason. Folks were heaping extra praise on throws that should have been routine. It's all part of the "excitement factor" that is self-generated out of incompetence.

Not if you throw back, against the grain... because we all know that is a proven recipe...
Pettine would still be rolling with Matt Flynn over Russell Wilson if he was in Seattle.
Doubtful... The only "style" Pet ultimately cares about is production while taking care of the ball. While Wilson's rookie 2.5% INT rate would be higher than Pet would like, Flynn's was higher.

Easy, h... I was asked and I answered.
I doubt my opinion is going to be much a factor... even if it should be...

A TD is a TD no matter how you get it. I'd love to have a more "traditional" QB but I would never try to "calm down" Manziel... In practice, you point out the mistakes and coach him to "calm down," but not when he's getting it done on gameday. A good coach would adjust HIS thinking to do whatever he needs to keep his guy rolling...
Not to mention, he's not the 1st QB who missed a couple open receivers in his 3rd NFL start...
Im not pro Manziel or anti Pettine, I just would like to see all our guys play/coach better.

The turning point & as I say "the moment our D started feeling so damn sorry for themselves than the wheels come off" was the AJ Green sideline out that got them out of the hole & Before we could play only as good as the next play Boom the Reverse. This D has so many ways of proving we cant win a game. I got to go with playing JM only with a scheme that fits his size, designed rollouts & you got to let him create what he sees. If I got to watch this D lose games than at least give me something that might excite me till that next beer. No fanboy that's reserved for C. Cook or P. Lynch.
