    This is a no brainer.

Start guy who can throw for 300+ and multiple TDs at will..... or...... start a guy that has made strides as reliable backup?

If the Browns are going to win games its going to take the QB to carry this team to victory. McCown is better suited for it. Still waiting for the RBs to break the 40 yrds rushing per game consistently.

This team needs WINS. Not punting and evaluating talent.

Yup... with one tweak... right call for now.

Gotta go put Barn in my starting fantasy line-ups wherever I have him...

I think John has done very well at the back up spot. Hes 1-1 and making better decisions protecting football. He really gets no blame for cinncy

On a side, anybody see the article on Reggie Bush suing the city of St. Louis for the same concrete issue that McCown had? He slipped on it after a punt return and tore his knee all to hell.

Everybody in the media thought it was hilarious when McCown had it happen to him.... I can't believe after St. Louis saw McCown hurt himself they didn't fix the issue and it happened to someone else... that concrete+cleats thing is no joke... I played in a rec league at a park one year, the park had a concrete path that went around the whole park for people to walk on. Guys would run out of bounds and onto that path and bust their ass allllll the time... I know it wasn't the only injury McCown had.... but that didn't help

To this day, I have executed the greatest run/slide/run combo in the history of the world.

Our high school had a concrete discus circle right off the corner of the endzone. I was running full speed during warm ups trying to catch a pass, slid all the way across the discuss pit, then continued my sprint on the other side and caught the pass. I've seen more than my fair share of people bust absolute ass when cleat meets concrete.

I can't wait to see McCown get murdered while putting up decent numbers to lose handily in the 2nd half. I actually do believe he gives us the best chance to win as of today, but it doesn't matter. I honestly almost wish Haslam would give his word that Pettine gets a year three so he'd start Manziel to see what we've got as opposed to recycling the same crap.

I've seen no convincing evidence so far McCown can produce any more wins than Johnny could with this train wreck of a defense, Barnidge & Benji being the only receivers who can get open, and no rushing game to speak of.

It might be laudable to play the guys you think give you the best chance to win, but if you're not winning- seems to me the guys you're playing aren't good enough to accomplish that goal. What's that about insanity- trying the same thing over and over, and expecting a different result? Jim Donovan has it mostly right- Pettine is probably coaching for his job if things don't turn around.

^+1 Add in maybe throw a pick six, or take around 6 sacks and fumble the ball away twice.

I'm pretty sure we all know Johnny isn't the QBOTF.

I guess they could let him prove it over the next 7 games, though,

We will be picking 1st or 2nd in the 2016 draft either way, at this point

Manziel is not ready and this article will breakdown why he's not. Start McCown when he's ready.

That's all fair and good, except that McCown has performed individually much stronger in his losses than Manziel. If both are losing, then you take the one who performs better - it's that simple. Starting Manziel over McCown would be admitting that this season is a waste, which is an even quicker way to lose your job.

Though right now, McCown isnt even practicing and they are preparing as if Johnny will play......(I think he probably will)...

Could be a little gamesmanship in keeping the Steelers guessing as long as possible.....

This is the best opportunity for the Browns to play him, w/o having to say hes the starter.....

The only problem with this though is that McCown has been losing his whole career. I get it, he's been on some lousy teams (us included) but if it smells like shit everywhere around you, it's time to look under your shoe.

We don't know that with Manziel yet. Again, as I noted above McCown probably gives us the best chance to win today. BUT, you will never get better as a player riding the bench. Practice can help a lot sure, but nothing beats in game experience. That's what Manziel doesn't have and McCown has a decent career of. This season is lost, I think we all know that. McCown just puts a prettier bow on the turd sandwich, where Manziel's upside is more at play. It would be admitting the season is gone to play him, but it just is.

Well, McCown is 18-38 as a starter, which is a .321 win percentage. Manziel is 1-3, or .250....so mathematically McCown is actually more of a winner than Manziel.

The only rationale for playing Manziel is to see if he is your franchise QB, which also means you are giving up on the season....in week 10. That's basically gift-wrapping your head in a box, so I doubt that Pettine et al are looking to do that. Announcing McCown as the conditional starter is the smart choice.

Firstly, I think we both know comparing 58 instances of events to 4 is fundamentally statistically biased..

I mean I hear what you're saying, I don't even disagree strongly. That's why I noted above I'd almost rather Haslam go to Pettine and let him know he's got a year three no matter the results. There's a good amount of 1st round QB prospects this year and we gotta know if Manziel is the dude or not. It's just pretty unreasonable to make that opinion with 4 games as a body of work.

The only way the browns are going to win is the qb carrying them to victory. Not only would it be cruel to throw John in with those expectations its fucking Retarded. We've done that shit time and time again. It doesn't work. Team needs victories. Bottom line.

I know, the point was to illustrate the "flawed" reasoning behind saying "McCown has always been a loser" as if it were some sort of proof of who should be starting. In a perfect world, what you're suggesting would be the best course of action.

However, we don't have that opportunity. Regardless of the point of the season, it's still a "win now" league. If Manziel didn't clearly show that he should overtake McCown, the coaches have no choice but to let it ride with McCown.

Yeah Pettine, start McCown...after all, he's the guy responsible for the total of 3 points we've scored in the last 3 2nd halves combined! If we continue to NOT use Duke, but run Winston in the 2nd half against Pittspuke, maybe we can make up the 55 points scored AGAINST us in those same 3 halves. I have to admit the guy rides a mean stationary bike.

Best chance to win? I'm sorry, but there IS no "best chance to win" without halftime adjustments & dramatic change to this defense.

If I don't laugh, I might explode. Pettine's defense is not just ineffective, it's practically non existent & he seems to REFUSE to address it. It's not just the players.
