  • I agree Mike. I'd fire Pettine and give Gruden a shot at running the wonderboy after his next rehab and when he has a real sponsor and not the drunks he keeps for company. I think Gruden is the only guy out there that just might pull that off. It's a big if but even if it does not work, we still have a better coach than what I see now.

Id say that IF the Browns(IE: Farmer/Haslam) are still in a Johnny frame of mind, then a Gruden(or any Johnny Fan) would be the way to go with the next Coach.....

But....after running this through my mind....Id HATE to pick my coach based upon "counting on Johnny"......

    Conundrum......

I say Haslem needs to act now.....step up and back your coach or fire him now......lets not drag this out.....

If we're gonna make a change, then lets get a head start, instead of being last on the list(again)....

  • I think we are focusing too much on the supposed alcoholism. Frankly I don't think the kid is an alcoholic. I think he drinks a lot at times but it's mostly he's kind of an asshole. His talent has been better than anyone elses around him for almost all of his life.

Therefore whether you call it cockiness or self-assured he has faith in his abilities.

As we speak I am sitting in the home of a friend waiting for the dogs outside to pee before I let them back in. My friend was carted off to the psych ward last night with a case of what appears to be the DT's. That's an alcoholic. Going out once a week and drinking champagne while people adore you is just college kid drunk. I truly believe the rehab was something he may be thought would be helpful or maybe thought his superiors wanted to see.

Like anger management or rehab after being busted with pot. Or a after a DUI . For shw.

    Steve,

I agree that we don't really know why he was in rehab & that we will probably never know.

I guess we'll just have to wait & see what happens.

Question for you Mike (and anyone else). How long do you keep him suspended on the bench? One more, two or all five? Or do you just trade him away when the season ends and let him stew in the twilight zone until that time?

Still in town Ag. They're running a Twitter poll on WKNR and it's 60% start Johnny. Is one game enough? Supposedly Pettine looked like a beaten man at his presser- haven't watched it yet. Maybe he should "man up" and do what's best for the franchise, instead of self interest. I doubt he can survive, based on his current record. Driving around with the radio on, they asked Tony Grossi if this can be labelled the worst season since 1999. His comment, "season isn't over yet, but it's in the running, and it's probably going to get worse."

^+1 A Bungle blowout should just about do it, Mud. How can you back 2-9 and tell the fan base- we're heading in the right direction?

When you let the drinking continue to interfere with your life and career alcoholism is a strong possibility. The recent incident in Avon Lake , the lying to cover his partying etc all all pretty damn indicative of an issue.

Yes I understand that no matter how much you drank or how often if it fucks up your career or your life there's a problem. My point is that most of these incidents should not fuck up anybody's life. The bit with the girlfriend in Avon Lake I think was a non issue. Same as the incidents or people are harassing him at a golf match or his apartment . I think two days off during the bye week is a non issue. Its not like it was before a game or he showed up hungover for practice or hadn't been progressing extremely well even according to Father, I mean coach Pettine.

I tend to worry more about the other possible signs of alcoholism on the list. Drinking by yourself, hiding your drinking, hiding bottles around the house, not showing up for work, blackouts etc. Just going out to a club and getting shithammered if you are silver the rest of the week doesn't bother me. I think all the Browns are concerned with is the fact that TMZ makes a big fucking deal out of it. Maybe they don't realize took their Puritan attitude fans the flames, you think?

Hiding your drinking? Told his coaches it was an 'old video' Check.

Not showing up for work? History of ignoring responsibilities as a professional QB and admittedly not being prepared his rookie year. Check.

Falling back into a similar pattern of drinking/partying/traveling after being named starter? Check

Did anyone think he was 'dismissed' from the Manning game for a family emergency? I don't. We'll check that.

Admitting HIMSELF into rehab thus acknowledging a problem. Big fucking check.

How in the shit can ANYONE say that's not signs of a substance problem?

You and others on this board can't see the wood for the trees and continue to fail at grasping even the most basic concept of accountability. By all accounts Johnny gave his word that what he was in fact video taped for he would 'NOT' do, as a condition of being named the starter. He went completely against his word. Does that mean nothing to you?

Johnny was more talented than anyone he played against for the longest time. But that is no more. In the NFL you need talent and a work ethic that goes beyond the norm to be a successful QB.

I posed the question quite a while ago, to date I've received NO response. Can anyone point out a similar young QB in the NFL partaking in the party scene so frequently during the season like Johnny does?

  • I like the smell of trees!!

  • Gronk?

  • Pettine doesn't need to sit Johnny on the Bench any longer. His point last night was made loud and clear. It must have been agony for Manziel to have to sit there and watch the #3 go in there with the game on the line, with his brothers out there fighting and bleeding on the gridiron... and to have to sit and watch it knowing that 'This was his time'... lesson sent, lesson received. I only wish I could word it better.

It was poetic and it was intense. Austin did a heck of a job, but he's not on Johnny's level. McCown did great and I hope he recovers well and comes back next season as the Veteran Mentor/ Backup Qb, I have total confidence in him, come a playoff game or whatever, I'll take him as a number 2 seven days a week. When Cleveland wins a Superbowl next year, I'm sure that McCown will play a major part in that.

  • It's going to be Johnny time from here on out. Manziel will be here for a long time, get used to it. We will have a great QB room, Manziel, McCown, Davis and Shaw. That QB room hasn't really disappointed this year. And even though we've still had our QB factions in brownstown, for once it not about who sucks the less.

Manziel, Gordon, Pryor, Benjamin, Duke Johnson and Barnidge will make it rain next season. Add a couple studs through the draft and pick up the missing piece in FA and we have ourselves a contender. It's a process, it will make it all the more worth it in the end.

  • I agree, just play Manziel, fck it. If he stinks up the joint or gets into more "trouble", cut him. Can't say we didn't see what we had.

  • Joe Namath? Aw hell, no one reads this shit anyways. So, go fuck u all...like what u regs say here is so earth shattering.....mud, you're the only one I read! Good-gobble-d-goop....that felt great!!

It is not for doing the right thing that I would release Pettine. It's for the overall poor play of the team in all phases of the game. And notice that I have now said IF when it comes to any coach being able to bring JM around to his full potential sans the active substance abuse monkey. I think Gruden is just a better coach for the Browns. Period. I also think that he is about the only one who MIGHT make JM into an excellent sober NFL level QB. But if he can't, then we still have a better coach than what have seen so far. I disagree that he is a fan/enabler. He won't tolerate JM's antics either.
