Sorry hater. Manziel looking damn good today.

Manziel has look good today but the next 3 games will be against possible playoff contenders and if last year taught the sunshine pumpers anything it should be you're not measured on how you play against bad teams when you are one

And we will see how it goes the next 3 weeks. Manziels ability to extend plays does bring a energy. Looks to me like the other players are trying to extend plays as well.

  • One thing I'd say is encouraging is at least we have a guy in Flip who can manage the QB position. For the band of misfit toys we've trotted out so far he's made them look pretty damn good. Let's hope the whole thing isn't a fluke and they finally found a run system that can sustain itself.

  • Before the game even started I turned to my father and said, "Ya know, there's a chance the team plays with more energy when Manziel is in the game. I've heard players say that he provides a spark and an element that can be measured. There's a definite excitement in the air when he's playing, and when he got benched, there was a feeling of air being let out of the balloon."

I didn't say anything that a lot of people didn't already know, but the game kind of verified it. I'm certainly not getting carried away, as whatever could go wrong for the 49's definitely did. They couldn't do anything right, and we capitalized on it. Now, we had a lot to DO with their ineptitude, and I don't want to take credit away from our boys, but the 49's played poorly.

The most impressive aspect of Manziel's performance Sunday to me was that he was PREPARED. Mangini didn't surprise him at all, and his zone-contain scheme failed. Johnny didn't rush, he didn't freak out, and he made the plays that were available. Was he perfect? Hell no, and we don't expect perfection. That interception was bush league, and he knew it. He had Benji directly in front of him for 10 yards, Barnidge down the seam (I didn't see him, but I read it) for a TD, and he also could've just thrown it away.

As well as Manziel and our running game performed today, I think it's our defense that gets the MVP. We actually got consistent pressure, and we even got it with a 3 or 4 man rush sometimes. Hot damn! Several rookies got in on the action, and the Nate Orchard 4th down sack was awesome.

We all know who we play during the next 3 games, and nobody expects similar results. However, I love how our team gave the fans one last entertaining game. Something to cheer about, and maybe a touch of hope.

  • Manziel has improved dramatically IN SPITE of daddy Pettine.

  • Looked to me like he would scrunch his body up at the end of every throw in anticipation of a hit. I assume that has an effect on follow through of the throw. Other than that, pretty nice performance.

  • well good.....sounds like McCown is rubbing off on him.....now we have 2 QB's with no quit in them.....

Id say things are looking up for that group, compared to 2 or even 1 year ago.....

Compared to Weeden, McCoy and Thad Lewis, we're doing pretty well.

Compared to Weeden, Campbell and Hoyer we're doing pretty well.

Compared to Hoyer, Manziel and Alex Tanney, we're doing pretty well.

  • I think this is a chicken and egg argument.

But would I love it if Manziel became Cleveland's Cam Newton? Absolutely.

You can be an entertaining figure and not get shitfaced drunk and pop bottles. Some people here don't seem to think that's the case.

It's all about what Manziel wants to be.

I agree with you. I want to see Johnny starting next year, with McCown backing him up. If we have the same coach and OC, that's a bit of continuity. I'm not saying we don't draft a QB, but we don't do it early. We also have Shaw coming back, who is a hard worker. I'm not getting out of my head with Johnny after one game, but I know I want to see more. And I'm not going to slam the guy if he struggles on the road at Seattle, on the road at K.C., or against the Steelers. Those are tough games, and I don't expect perfection. That being said, I do want to see improvement. Don't make that awful interception, don't take that awful sack against a 3 man rush, and run the ball a bit more.

What was that? Yep...I actually want him to run the ball MORE. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE that Manziel is making progress in the pocket and from under center, it's quite impressive. However, I feel like Manziel left some HUGE yards on the table yesterday. I know that running is a great way to get yourself hurt, but there were some running lanes that could've netted some big gains, and allowed him to slide. It's a very difficult line to straddle...make plays from the pocket...run the ball. It's a delicate balance, and he'll figure it out the more he plays, and the more he watches his film. His mouth will gape when he sees some of the running room. He did run for at least one really nice first down, but once he figures out when to run, and when to pass....LOOK OUT. Super mobile quarterbacks are especially dangerous in the red zone, and this is an area where we notoriously struggle. Once Johnny figures this part of the game out, defenses will be on their heels. We could run QB draws, bootlegs, or whatever.

    now THAT is priceless.

i don't think even the 'haters' (like myself) hate manziel. i just want him to prove to me, the media and to the world why he was worthy of our 1st round pick before he says he'll 'break the league (with his talent)' running around like a fool and doing the money sign as he gets run over by a linebacker.

wasn't able to see the game but met with a client where red zone was on and even THEY shied away from showing any manziel 'action'. i guess they've been burned too many times as well. but this club where i was at is notorious for being a 'legends' type sports club where their patrons know more about football than walter knows about sucking eggs. the first thing out of the old bartender's mouth seeing me walk in when the browns were already up by 7 was " johnny. the kids a millionaire. he needs rehab and a bodyguard. i'd tell my bodyguard to knock me out if went out and started to fuck up!" etc. etc. to which i said "maybe he should just stay home in his mansion and stay out of the spotlight"(which i've said from day one).

glad the browns won. maybe manziel IS the guy? who knows? but in sports i'll take young over old any day. showing improvement is another check on the list. but to say right this second that he is the franchise QB of the browns going forward is a stretch. BUT continue to show improvement against the tougher opponents and he WILL earn trust and respect from even his most hating of the haters.

but his performance wasn't the biggest thing to happen in our division yesterday.....

mccarron sucks bags. how can anyone (FO) trust anything that comes out of alabama anymore?

Oh, I don't know. CJ Mosely, Marcell Dareus, Eddie Lacy, TJ Yeldon, Rolando McClain, Mark Barron, James Carpenter, Jalston Fowler, Amari Cooper, Kareem Jackson, Mark Ingram, Julio Jones, Dre Kirkpatrick, Andre Smith, Courtney Upshaw, Chance Warmack? Far as I know they're all starting and range from average to elite. No one expected McCarron to be worth anything in the NFL, for the most part.

Did you drop the mic because your argument was garbage?

  • during.

  • I was against the signing of McCown this offseason. Saw him as being old, washed-up and not bringing with him the intangibles that we were being told he possessed. He was a born backup with a lot of losses on his resume and added to a losing culture.

    I was wrong.

The guy played with guts and skill and helped the team score despite not having a good receiving crew and not having a running game. I have no doubt he's a big part of the reason that Manziel has progressed so much from last season to now. I couldn't have possibly asked for more from him or anyone else we would have signed in that position in the offseason. I like that he's going to be around next year.

I really hope however, that Manziel continues to show this progress. I loved seeing him angry after that interception and how he responded to it. I think he's finding a balance to his pocket game and his ability to extend plays. Teams have to fully collapse that pocket in order to get at him and I think their game plan is a lot less confident with Johnny under center.

And the biggest thing? Yes. The team I believe has a different energy when he's the guy at the helm. These next few games are going to be tough as hell and I don't expect wins. But I would love it if Manziel shows the ability to make these teams "miss" as it were... To help the Browns play more competitively than we've seen for much of the season.

I'm not confident with him as the present -> future franchise quarterback for the Browns. But I am warming up to the idea.

Manziel is playing great. But seriously. Where has this running game been? It's opening up the entire field and keeping our defense well rested.

That running game is more effective when Johnny plays....Interesting, hunh? The Johnny haters won't like to hear this, but I don't think it's just coincidence. That kid MAKES things happen!

Scrambling cannot be the only useful part of a QB's game

Oh it can be.............. for a game or two. Those QBs that rely on that as a major part of their game all have one thing in common - the "ex" - in front of 'ex-NFL Starting QB'.

Yeah like Ex-QB's Staubach and Tarkenton. 😛

But seriously he stood in nearly every single snap (other than the quick hitters) going through his progressions. Some QB's have that internal clock then go off and throw the ball away. But some have that same clock go off and look for play extension while still looking for receivers. That is what we have in JM. At some point he will add the "throwaway" to his repertoire as the 3rd and last option. That day is not far off in my opinion. When JM starts beating a bad play into his head with his tablet, it usually sticks.
