Justin Gilbert told the coaches he wouldn't play for them.

I never like to see anybody lose their job - I have been there more than once, myself - but it sounds like there was/is a mutiny on the team.
A HC coach should be able to support and - to a certain extent - shield his players from a dysfunctional owner (as an example)
Reading Zombo's post about JFF being out the night before a game, the rumblings about Thomas and Mack wanting out and this report (assuming all are true) tells me the coach lost control.
If the first line of coaching loses control, there is nothing else to control. The inmates will grown in number.............
Yes, the ship has headed to the bottom of the great blue.
Good post but I would like add maybe he never had the right type of control. Because if there are leeches on the team the HC should have every right to say "get them the hell out of here"
This- you possibly think Pettine didn't want to cut Bowe, and Farmer wouldn't let him? I duly note Farmer was the first to go. So MHO is Farmer ranks first in the blame game in Jimmuh's mind?
There was a lot of dead wood besides Gilbert I have to think Pettine would have unloaded, but Ray was loving his picks.

It was pretty obvious that there were a few guys Pettine didn't want around.

As far as getting fired first or second it doesn't really matter cause the both lost.

... we are mad at Pettine for wanting a cover corner??
Poor dude ended his career with three safeties and a 6th round rookie playing against Roethlisberger and Brown ... and hung in there for three quarters!

Yeah- see my comments in the gameday thread. We lost because Davis played an incredibly shitty game, and you can't blame a depleted secondary for not being able to cover a 1,000+ yard receiver.

He's gay. Everybody in Cleveland knows this. Get over yourself Justine. If he really pulled this shit then a teammate should have punched him.
-
Sorry but Pettine wasn't in charge of personnel decisions.
He had input, sure - but the guy who's job description includes responsibility for personnel is the one who got rightly canned
-
And we know it wouldn't be Joe Thomas because when the fuck has he ever stood up for anybody. Certainly not when the Steelers were knocking guys out (Cribbs, MoMass maybe?)
This team is full of marshmallows.

Is he just a pussy, or is he a pussy that is an actial homosexual? Makes no difference to me, but it does in an NFL locker room.

No he's gay and he's not the only one on the team but he's being paid millions of dollars to tell his coach no? Fuck him.

I am almost embarresed. Think soon we are going to turn into philly fans. Boo the good things on life like Santa. ?

Pettine drafted Justin Gilbert and Haslam demanded Manziel. At least this explains why no Khalil Mack, wide receiver, QB. So goodbye to two Guys who made a ton of money and could retire if they were me.
Since there are only 32 Head coaches and 32 General Managers in the world, there's no excuse for Haslam not to find capable replacements.
I realize Pettine was a last minute hire because Joe Banner screwed Greg Sciano when he showed up for an interview. There's nothing like a dysfunctional owner running an even more dysfunctional team. Then drafting two of the most dysfunctional players to come along since Charles White!
Good Luck Haslam! I will be holding my breath for anyone better than the last two idiots!

Maybe things work differently with the Browns, but with the Packers McCarthy also plays a role in the draft process. These character red flags should come up during pre-draft interviews. But then again Manziel had everybody fooled, so maybe I've got it all wrong.
I like Pettine, would be happy to see him get another chance to prove himself. Plenty of things that went wrong with the organisation this year have nothing do with him. To me, the Gilbert thing blowing up is one of the few - and even then, it's not all on him.

It was Pettine who wanted Gilbert!

Laughable post...
Any sign that Pet authority was reinforced/backed by his Owner? I mean before that Owner let leak that he was gone as soon as the final gun was fired and the paper was signed?

Unless Belichick is the coach and Kosar, the QB????

Gilbert and Manziel are absolute cunts.
Pettine had to be fired because we are blowing up football operations, but he deserves a lifetime achievement award for dealing with these douchebags for two years while always supporting them publicly.

Perfectly stated.

I can't imagine there would not be grounds for some sort of dismissal without pay or early contract release for the Cleveland Browns if in fact a player refused to take the field.

If any player ever did refuse flat out to play for the team paying him, he would basically be blackballed, never to be trusted by another team, certainly any that has any connection to that team. You would have to be certifiably insane to do such a thing.
That being said, Justin Gilbert seems like one of the dumbest fucks around, which in the world of professional sports takes some doing.
-
I don't know if the story is true or not. Even as big of a knucklehead as Gilbert is I don't think he would push it this far. Anyway if true and swift and immediate discipline was not taken I would want to know why? If the Browns are cleaning house and giving a class HC walking papers then why are they putting up with players like Gilbert and Manziel who been nothing but a cancer to the team?
I understand why Pettine was let go as his record is 3-18 in the last 21 games but I also look at the cards he was given. He had to babysit Manziel almost from the time JM was signed as well as the circus atmosphere and distractions that came with Manziel. Other players as well on this team who were acting far from being professional such as Gilbert.

IMO your x-head coach was that bad...Gilbert is part of the solution(for the next head coach)
Gilbert has the tools just needs to be with the right coach
