Goff Or Lynch @2?

  • I've been raving about Goff more than any QB prospect we've had a chance at in nearly forever.

He's gotten better every year at Cal, but he also has the smarts, footwork, mechanics, accuracy, etc. to match. Best by far in this QB class at basically everything if you watch him from a technical standpoint.

    Lynch is...OK.

Big slinger, I think he's a less athletic Kaepernick type of guy. Has a lot more problems out of the box than Goff, also has the fact he worked in a system that is pretty dumb by NFL standards. Lots of very simple reads or quick decisions, the type of systems you see the Brandon Weedens and Johnny Manziels come from.

Goff played primarily in a spread-type system too, but albeit a much more complex one. He actually had to change plays at the line, make much more complicated reads. Basically it gave Goff a lot more control over what was going to happen compared to the system Lynch was in.

Lynch might be worthy of a late first-round pick. I probably wouldn't touch him until the 2nd or later.

Goff is worth the #1 overall pick.

your opinion of Goff is much much higher than the consensus opinion of him currently. Which is that he is probably the top qb in the class(about 25-30% of experts still like lynch better) and will be a high first round pick, but that is due more to the fact that teams always push up the top qbs because of need. Both jameis and mariota were getting higher grades than Goff or Lynch. Goff is being graded right now as being much closer to a top 5 overall pick like a blake bortles than a luck or manning.

Not saying Goff won't turn out to be very good(or very poor...I have no idea), but there is definately not some consensus out there from the experts that he is a super duper elite qb prospect.

It's January, so let's give it some time. I think the hype train will start to build as more people watch film and study his game - also after he throws at the combine and such.

I'm not sure who is, but seems like to me everybody is saying Goff is the top prospect - anybody still saying Lynch is probably out of their mind anyway.

He has very few flaws, I haven't really seen anybody saying anything significantly bad about him other than "Utah!" - which was a bad game, but it's much worse on paper than it actually looks on film.

We just need a franchise guy who can be good for many years, not necessarily a Peyton or Luck.

Bortles is OK, but I don't think he's really comparable to Goff in terms of the type of prospect he was.

  • Bortles on the surface is more like Lynch - late riser, smaller school, high ceiling, low floor etc etc

That's all anyone needs to know. The Browns will buy it from there and waste another pick on an "ok" QB who gets us hyped up to take him instead of BPA.

"Hide behind the chainsaws" fools us every f'n time. "If you're in a horror movie (and we are) that's what you do."

Yeah they definitely screwed the pooch when they drafted the drunk brat from A&M.

I'd agree with you except for the fact that Goff isn't "ok." That was Brandon Weeden, Johnny Manziel, Colt McCoy, Brady Quinn, Luke McCown.

The thing about those guys is - everybody knew they were "ok" (or bad) except for us on draft day. Everybody else knew what we didn't. (Ok, McCoy and McCown were fine wagers with low picks - but the others were not first-round quality and everybody knew it)

Weeden was going to fall well into the 2nd round, but we're dumb and liked him when no other team did. Manziel was slated to fall further than every other top QB prospect (Bortles/Bridgewater/Carr/Garrapolo may have ALL been taken before Johnny except for the fact that we're a bunch of idiots who ignore scouting reports for text messages), Quinn was regarded among the best in a crappy QB class - and everybody was surprised when he kept falling, falling, and falling. Then the dumbass Browns took him after it was apparent nobody wanted him.

You don't pass on a franchise QB for a DE - just doesn't happen, Goff will be a franchise QB somewhere.

And the DE we're talking about isn't JJ Watt here. It's so much easier to draft every other position than it is to draft a franchise QB, so we won't pass up on the one that's sitting on top of everybody's draft board.

  • @westside-steve said:

Neither were Brady Quinn, Brian Hoyer, Brandon Weeden, Jason Campbell, Charlie Frye, Josh McCown, Connor Shaw, Austin Davis or anybody else. Now shall we hearken back to the words of wisdom of Frank Morgan in The Wizard of Oz when he said : "But they've got one thing you haven't got; a price tag of the second pick of the NFL Draft!"

That true, none of them were shits like Manziel. All good Cleveland Browns.

    Nonetheless they aren't/weren't good enough.

And if you don't have a franchise QB ... you need one.

    So try again.

Hey I don't care about trying again. I care about putting a team together that's competitive with a middle-of-the-road quarterback.

    WSS

  • Like you said, it's January, and things won't get really ramped up until later. The draft completely changes every year during this time, and this year probably won't be any different. Remember when Teddy was the #1 pick forever, had a bad pro day, and fell all the way down? Btw, we didn't want him, despite being touted as the most "pro ready" prospect by many. His slight frame and poor pro day scared people off, and while he's not blowing the doors off the league, he's proven to be a tough competitor and should've had his first playoff victory (remember the playoffs? Yeah...me either).

It'll be interesting to see what QB shoots up the board out of nowhere, as it happens often. Maybe a guy like Wentz gets hot, or somebody else. Point is, people rise and fall this time of year, and it probably won't be different in 2016. However, if our franchise falls in love with a guy, I won't have a problem with going QB. As long as we're not reaching to draft a QB just to have one.

If middle of the road means a guy that will become one of the top 16 QBs in the world, then I'm in. Top 10 would be great.

This year's final 8 teams are QB'd by Brady, Manning, Ben, Alex Smith, Cam, Palmer, Wilson and Rodgers.

So get me a guy like that. Because I'd like to be one of those final eight teams.

Top Ten Defense plus Top 10 QB ... you are pretty much in the playoffs every year.

So keep trying for that QB. McCown is old and nobody else on the roster is starter material.

  • As you know I believe very strong team coupled with continuity makes for a great quarterback. I don't think Alex Smith has ever been a great quarterback, he looks good because he's on a good team.

I believe that had McCown started his career on a good team and stayed there for a long while he'd be in that Elite category.

Put any of those guys on a shitty team and reshuffled the deck every two years and we'd be calling them career backups today.

Agree. Put Andy Dalton on the Browns and he would have been cut after 2 years.

Does a Brady Quinn or Brandon Weeden become a star with the Bengals and take them to the playoffs five straight years?

I lean more toward we have drafted shitty QBs than our shitty team has ruined QBs.

Evidenced by what they did after they left here: Squadoosh. I mean, it took both Weeden and Hoyer to get the Texans into the playoffs.....and they really went there in spite of them instead of because of them.

Texans are a team with a legit WR, good RB, and a top D, and Hoyer/Weeden took them to the playoffs. We weren't far behind in the run game last year, but the D and the receiving game let us down.
