  • And back to that veteran with some gas in the tank. It doesn't work if the team sucks or there's not as much gas left as one might think. Example Joe Namath in Los Angeles. Replaced midseason by a mediocre Pat Haden. Cleveland Jake Delhomme.

  • trade down--in the top ten and still pick Lynch,Goff,or Wentz.

I'm sick as hell of trading down. No thanks.

Unless you could get Brees or Rivers there's no one even interesting out there.

  • No matter who we take first I hope we take a chance on cardale jones later. Could be a huge payoff.

And the reason I hesitate to do that is the fact that the homers will go absolutely out of their minds if he doesn't start immediately and for a long period of time regardless of his performance.

I haven't got anything against the kid but he did lose the starting job on the team he took to the national championship in three spectacular outings.

And since we have glaring needs that have nothing to do with quarterback how can we spend two of our top three picks on that position?

  • Because we don't have one and we need one. If our top pick busts (imagine that) there needs to be a backup plan. What huge defensive picks do the patriots have playing for them? What huge offensive picks?

    JaMarcus Russell part 2

Of course if the team is no better than its been there's a damn good chance he will bust and so will your boy Cardale.

If the team is only one player, quarterback, away from success AND if the heir apparent to Philip Rivers and Drew Brees is in place and they up salary cap casualties that might help.

    WSS

  • Why take anyone? They'll just bust

JaMarcus Russell was a head case

  • I'd consider cardale with a 5th or 6th round pick.

We still gotta get the #1 guy

If we don't turn the ship around they sure will.

And just for the record I agree, why take anyone?

But especially why take anyone just because he's from Ohio State?

If the Cleveland Browns suck because of the quarterback position yes indeed. Draft your best guess at the number 2 spot.

The point is there always guys that can play that fall through the cracks. Belichick has built a dynasty finding them. We can't possibly draft to fill all our positions of need so you really have to rank them in importance.

New England's entire starting offense only has 1 1st round pick on it.

However, it also has Tom Brady on it.

Really I want to see us go QB @ #2. Pray for the second coming of Gordon, hope and pray we can get a guy like Alshon Jeffrey. Maybe draft a mid-low WR/RB/OL but I think most of our draft should really focus on the defensive front.

Going to a power run game, we really need to find a solid lead FB blocker and a TE bruiser too - but we may be able to find some cheap gems from FA or get UDFAs. For some reason though we haven't been find a decent fullback.

Well there is a dissenting opinion.

(Yes players do fall through the cracks.

Are there any other second string college quarterbacks you have your eye on?)

Knocks on Goff there are all easily explained by him not being on a very good team:

Doesn't show up in big games (8:8 TD:INT against four big teams) - you watch the games and those teams were all over him, he got no help from the OL.

Not a winner (14-23 record) - Cal was 1-11 before he joined, and this year were 8-5. Lord knows we'd hate that kind of turn around in three years in Cleveland...

Big numbers come from system - it's college. Everyone's big numbers come from the system.

  • Well it can't be manziel and I can't see banking on concussion mccown so unless joey bosa can play qb were going to need to get somebody.

  • Point being, there's nothing there about his skills, his physical and mental attributes, how they translate to the pros. Lazy 'scouting' to just look at his record and say he's 'not a winner' therefore we shouldn't draft him. Connor Shaw was a winner at South Carolina, something like 26-6 or thereabouts. Does that make him a better QB than Goff? How about Colt McCoy, the 'winningest QB in college history'?

  • So how about wentz?

That description of Goff doesn't seem accurate at all to me - it's more of a generalization than an evaluation. Transitioning from a spread to pro NFL offense should not automatically disqualify a guy - because several have to make that transition. He has the footwork to make it a painless transition, and he already reads the entire field and makes pre-snap reads + changes plays. Also calling him a loser isn't totally fair, considering the entire Cal team except for him pretty much sucks - he elevated them to a much higher level than they'd otherwise be.

And I can't think of any reason anybody would have their eye on a second string college quarterback - it pretty much never happens. A guy that goes 4 years and can't become a starter on his college team would probably not even be anywhere close to an NFL scout's radar. The only reason Cardale is there is because Browns fans tend to be huge OSU fans - and OSU is a huge program that gets much more national attention.

Meyer's spread option system is also much worse if you're talking about transitioning to a pro offense (Seeing Cardale make this transition is hard for me) than Cal's air raid type offense - which demands a lot more stuff down the field and gives more power to the quarterback.
