How To Get A Qb

  • Wentz is fine, but we take the #1 prospect with the highest ceiling at #2. That's Goff.

No offense to Wentz, we're talking a 2 year starter from a tiny FCS program against basically no competition - who is rapidly rising based on a limited sample size of his performance. Also rising in big part because of his prototypical size.

I like Wentz, but those things are scary to me. Wentz is also much more raw mentally and physically - he locks on to targets, rougher footwork, struggles getting the right touch on throws, etc.

There's also the fact Wentz missed 2 months this season when he broke his throwing wrist. And apparently has a history of arm and shoulder injuries as a baseball player.

The only QB we'll consider at #2 is Goff - I have no doubts about that. Otherwise we may be looking at a lower prospect like Prescott.

  • i think Goff is a reach at #2, it's like another Geno Smith-type scenario where there's no really stand out QB that's worthy of a first-round pick so teams settle on drafting a QB just to draft a QB instead of getting the best player available. Imagine if JFF stayed in school and declared this year, would Goff beat him out?

I think the Browns should go for a stud linebacker at #2 overall, or trade down for more picks since there are a ton of holes on both defense and offense. Roll with McCown and Shaw as QB, draft a project QB in later rounds to groom, let go of Austin Davis. I wouldn't be sad if Manziel got another chance, he did show lots of improvement and I think he can win in this league but I think it's unlikely that Jackson puts up with him.

Not even close to a Geno Smith - who was actually taken in the second round. EJ Manuel, however was a big reach at #13 or whatever. I knew, you knew it, the Bills knew it, literally everybody knew it. Not the same situation as this draft - where we have 3 worthy first round prospects.

And JFF wouldn't beat out any of Goff, Wentz, or Lynch.

I'm pretty sure he didn't beat out Bortles, Bridgewater, or Carr either - we're just Retard and ignore our scouting department for text messages.

  • Can we hop off the Cardale train? Does anyone really believe he has the mental capacity to be a top QB in this league? Thats what we need to find out. Who is the smartest, quickest thinker of the bunch? Who is the best leader? They all have the arm strength, size, and look of a pro QB. We need to find the guy who can outsmart the defense.

It would be a disaster if we lost all 3. I think JT will stay and we'll re-sign Schwartz though. I see Mack as 50/50 really.

  • Well just from the consensus BB f it is inevitable we take a quarterback with the second pic I would go with your boy. Not because that's the route I think we should go but whatever the risks may be he seems like the best bet on the board.

Sure its no guarantee of success but the best odds anyway.

But I still think he's going to have problems unless we drastically change this teams performance.

  • Getting a quality quarterback in free agency or through a trade is extremely difficult. These types of QB's generally attract interest from multiple teams, and several can almost pick and choose where they want to play the remainder of their career. Getting somebody to play in the windy, cold atmosphere of Cleveland is difficult. Never mind that our Browns have been a constant mess and a place where many players go to die. It would be so hard to trade for a quality player at the QB position. What team in their right mind would let a starting QB go? Arizona got Carson Palmer, sure, but remember how? Palmer went to Oakland and did not play all that well. It wasn't like the Cardinals were getting a sure thing. New Orleans got Drew Brees, but only because the Bolts had Phillip Rivers. And if you remember, Brees was coming off a nasty shoulder injury, and his future was far from certain. Peyton Manning? Yeah...one of the most prolific free agents ever, and a guy like THAT isn't coming to Cleveland (no offense to our beloved team).

Any QB we're going to get through free agency or a trade will have a ton of question marks. Guys like RG III, Kaepernick, etc.

Gipper, I don't think the Browns or anyone else can learn anything by looking at history, other than the obvious.

Perhaps not....but I like doing it.

You can't win championships without a great QB.

And no matter what method the Browns have used....it hasn't worked.

You can probably research and see the places the great ones came from in regards to draft position. I would bet 1st rounder represent the biggest sector, but not by a huge majority. Getting a great , proven FA is obviously the best probability, but good luck finding one. Again, if it were me in charge I would trade the benefit of being the starting QB no BS with JM, in exchange for his commitment that he wants it.

I think it would actually be proven that more championship caliber QBs come from high draft picks.

If not, they the Browns can't take Bosa, they have to take Goff, OR the better prospect, Paxton Lynch.

This is not a matter of a QB prospect guaranteeing us a SB, it is a matter of the Browns biggest glaring weakness is QB. That position deserves top priority. The risk involved is the most expensive, but it is the most likely to pay dividends.

That is why I started this thread.....the Browns need a good QB....how the hell do they get one?

  • Btw, we've done this - you've done this - countless times before. There are multiple ways of getting a great QB, none is fool proof and most times you try you'll fail. Don't stop trying, though.

  • I'm not sure Bosa is even the best DE in the draft, much less the best overall prospect.

With that said, I firmly expect him to go #1 to Tennessee now.

And the reason I hesitate to do that is the fact that the homers will go absolutely out of their minds if he doesn't start immediately and for a long period of time regardless of his performance.

I haven't got anything against the kid but he did lose the starting job on the team he took to the national championship in three spectacular outings.

Pretty sure that after two-years of training we can resist calls for a QB who is clearly not ready to play...

Big numbers come from system - it's college. Everyone's big numbers come from the system.

There are a couple legit issues around Goff's numbers...

    - he played from behind a lot against better teams playing "soft";

    - his Offense sputtered in the red zone.

The former is what it is and Goff's stats did benefit. The latter is not unusual when a spread offense gets compressed and has no power options to turn to... and Cal did not.

He may well be, but how much of a "reach"? No doubt he's a 1st Rounder. He's easily Top 20... arguably Top 10... likely Top 5.

At what point does the reach become "unacceptable"?

I still think the whole JT thing is way overblown. I count Mack as gone. Schwartz is the key and I hope our odds are as good as 50/50.

    Another good analysis on Goff

And it actually was an "analysis" rather than a glossy generalization. One of the things mentioned, but Goff still does not get enough credit for is his "niftiness" in the pocket.

In one of his tapes at DraftBreakdown, you can hear a commentator (may have been McShay who was a "sideline reporter" for a game) say something to the effect of: "He has a sharp focus downfield and a soft focus in his immediate area."

I'd never heard pocket presence put that way, but it was dead on. Time after time I have seen Goff react to pressure at which he never seemed to look. It's not "feeling pressure". It's trusting and reacting to his peripheral input without having to confirm it by looking at it.

Put another way... after five tapes and counting, I have never seen Goff look "frantic".

  • Tour, the biggest thing for me by far that stands out with Goff is his ability to slide up and away from pressure in the pocket. Seen him countless times just sidestep a blitzer, or turn and roll out at just the right time, as opposed to being a statue or being to quick to bolt.

    lol... borderline lmao...

    First, you know it's "Wheezy".

Second, and the reason I laughed so much, The Wheezy Line is so far beyond what I was thinking here, that it is funny.

That's it! And how many times have you seen him turn his head to look at the defender pressuring him?

I see similar things in there. Accurate, escapes pressure well. The things highlighted as weaknesses are the things that are eminently coachable - footwork, mainly, and some throwing mechanics.

I'm getting ahead of myself, and have rarely been so excited by a prospect, and there's a decent chance he'll bust as with any QB (and most picked by us). But thinking about drafting Goff, keeping Mack/Schwartz/Benjamin, signing someone like Alshon Jeffrey and then adding Josh Gordon to the mix? It's enough to make me go all PoeticG...

    You're dreaming.

I would bet you would heard the chanting for 12 gauge right after Goffs first pick 6.

Sounds like a good reason to go all PoeticG to me. I'm pretty much there, but not without good reason.

Getting Alshon Jeffrey would be pretty nice...
