Cosell: Jared Goff A Better Qb Prospect Than Jameis Winston

The Browns Board

  • The Buccaneers have a very promising quarterback to build around in Jameis Winston, but NFL Films senior producer Greg Cosell says the team that drafts Cal QB Jared Goff this year could end up even happier than the Bucs are with Winston.

Cosell said on Wednesday that Goff, a junior who intends to enter the 2016 NFL Draft, is a better prospect than Winston.

"My initial study of Goff tells me that I think (Goff is) a more natural and better overall thrower than (Titans QB Marcus) Mariota. I think he's a better prospect than Jameis Winston," Cosell told WGFX-FM in Nashville, Tennessee. "Where he goes? I can't answer that, but from studying it preliminarily, that's how I see it with Jared Goff."

That's high praise for Goff, who racked up spectacular numbers as a three-year starter for the Golden Bears. However, Cosell was far from smitten with Winston heading into last year's draft, saying in April that he'd take Titans QB Zach Mettenberger, a 2014 sixth-round pick, over Winston. Of course, the Bucs didn't give the Titans a chance to land Winston, selecting the FSU QB first overall before Tennessee chose Mariota at No. 2.

"Winston had a very nice rookie season and it looks like he'll be a solid player. How good? No one can answer that at this moment," Cosell said. "I'm just comparing Goff, and again, I haven't done as much work on Goff as I did on Winston when I was done with the process last year, but that's the basis of my comparison."

NFL Media analysts Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks both have Goff as the first QB off the board, going No. 2 overall to the Browns, in their first mock drafts of the year. The Titans aren't in the market for a QB after picking Mariota, but they certainly are open to listening to offers from any team interested in leapfrogging the Browns to ensure a chance to pick Goff before Cleveland gets the opportunity.

Cosell likes Goff as a fit for the Browns, or any other team, for that matter.

"I think Goff fits any system. I don't think Goff is system specific," he said. "I think his skill set, his throwing skill set, his looseness as an athlete, his light feet, I think he fits, theoretically, any system. He would be my choice right now (for the Browns). He could run (head coach) Hue Jackson's system no problem."

If Goff does indeed land in Cleveland and performs better than Winston did as a rookie, happy days will be here for long-suffering Browns fans. Then again, it could be heartbreak again if a team moves ahead of the Browns to snatch Goff before Cleveland gets a chance.

Yes, this draft process is beginning to get very interesting.

  • He also said RG3 was a better prospect than Luck ... Trent Richardson was the next Adrian Peterson... etc.... he is a walking hot take, not a draft evaluator.

  • who cares. goff at #2 and i'll stand by that (unless of course they have pics of him on an inflatable swan in a pool with a champagne bottle in his hand or a selfie of him with a rolled up bill in a bathroom stall with blizzy coming out his nose).

  • Cam Newton, Ben, Winston, = P. Lynch, Wentz are your thick TE molds at QB's that could last a NFL season. Most remember the beat down we gave Mariota in Cleveland & soon after the NFL beatings got Mariota sidelined. Here lies my biggest questions on Goff? Goff in no way is a Mariota guy that can tuck the ball & run but he also is not the McCown that can stand in & take a lot of hits either. This is Cleveland, no matter what when we draft a QB he will be forced to play. Book It!! It's going to be a close call. Not going up to 1 imo but going Bosa @2. Lynch or Wentz & possibly falling back a few. Tick Tock

  • goff is a stand in the pocket passer. i just go by the old eye ball test and i (as many others have) see that he lloks, talks, and walks the part of a franchise QB. what i saw of him in his bowl game with the touch, the accuracy and the arm strength when needed was quite impressive.

i mean like i've heard it said many times from other people you just gotta keep picking and hopefully one day you'll get it right.

btw bone head bosa, no thanks, unless horton pulls off a coo...coo coo to you. too many des have come and passed through berea almost at the same rate as qbs.

  • I see us taking Bosa at 2 and being in the mix for RG3 in FA when he is cut

  • My only concern is someone tries to hop the Browns and take Goff before us. I wouldn't be opposed to swapping picks with Tennesee. Trade them manziel and some picks to swap.

I figure the closest team who would want to hop up to #1 would be the Rams. For them, they'd have to give up their future - I'm not so sure I see it.

I don't think Jerruh will pull a Jerruh for Goff, though they may want to try to get Bosa

  • Again, viewing the NFL through my garnet and gold colored glasses, I can officially tell you "no way in HELL" is Goff a better prospect than Winston. I'm not sure it's that close, really. Winston made his share of awful rookie mistakes, and was far from perfect in his first season. He struggled in the red zone, threw too many unnecessary picks, and couldn't close out a few games that he should've. That being said, when you look at Winston's numbers and durability, it's hard to think of too many better ROOKIE QB's in the past few years. Winston also played in a very pro-friendly offense in college, and is comfortable under center and in the shotgun. Furthermore, the players appear to love the guy's dedication and commitment. It's not easy to become the team leader as a rookie, and it's apparent that he already is. Winston is at home throwing short passes, seam passes, and "across the field dig routes" that many people get hung up on. While not a fluid athlete, he certainly has more than enough juice to make plays with his feet, and shows an uncommon passion that players feed off of.

Can Goff do all that? Right now, I don't think anybody knows for sure, but it's my opinion that Goff isn't the same caliber prospect. That being said, I'd love NOTHING more than to be wrong about that if we draft the kid!

  • Listened to Cosells draft thoughts for two years now and he's very very good. If I'm an owner I'd want him in the building in some capacity

Only the Browns would do something that stupid. Can we jump ourselves? 😆

    No idea who Cossell is...

Correct... Goff is no Mariota on the run, but he's no statue either and he is the best at sliding in the pocket that I have seen in a long time. Easily moves better than McC and runs faster to boot.

Should we end up with Goff, or any 1st-round QB, I have no doubt that he will not start until he is ready or very nearly ready.

    Book that! 😉

I've only seen one interview of any length with him and he did come off quite well. I've no doubt once SB50 is in the rearview mirror we'll see him on the tube everywhere all the time...

... and I just realized that "on the tube" is a new anachronism...

Agree.... we love Goff and even we wouldn't mortgage a future for him. Even have issues paying a significant price to move up to #1...

It helps that there is at least one more prospect that looks posed to act as a reasonable Plan B alternative.

  • Goff needs to gain weight. My question about taking him number 2 is; Does he play right away or sit? Does McCowns start and if so what happens when he goes down? Austin Davis?

I don't think we need to worry about who the third string QB is. Austin Powerless, Connor Shaw, some guy Hue likes ... whatever, it would be a guy.

It'll be McCown + Rookie + Some Guy.

And the rookie will play, because McCown isn't lasting 16 games, he didn't last one quarter last year.

Agree... but the plan will be to let the Rook sit and learn as long as possible or until he's ready... which ever is shorter... but hopefully not too short.

  • Wasn't sure whom Cosell was, so I went back and looked at some of his scouting and projections.

...He might not be the best individual one could use when seeking a backup opinion.

  • The rookie will more than likely get the McCoy treatment where he has to wait for the guys in front of him to go down with injuries.

So just to be contrary if that takes four, six or eight games somebody can truthfully say 'well this kid couldn't even beat out a 38 year old career back up!" It would be a valid argument?

If, after 8 weeks, he didnt even know how to call a play in the huddle. Then, yes, it would be.
