The Truth

We should make everybody call their no doubt sure fire all Pro can't miss selections now so that a year from today we don't have everybody pretending that they wanted Khalil Mack.

Bosa - if we pass him by at #2 we will regret it as my as Khalil or Jones. Only caveat is if we get an equally good defensive player who can pressure the QB. It's what our D needs the most to become truly excellent.
-
Bosa is more comparable to Jared Allen than JJ Watt - although Bosa is probably a bit heavier. I think he'll be solid, but I don't think he'll be JJ Watt level.
If Lawrence Taylor was a 6'6 270 lb DE then maybe it'd make sense to compare him to Bosa (but he wasn't)

Taylor was 6'3" 240. Bosa 6'6" 276.
Maybe Bosa more Deacon Jones: 6'5 275
Or, maybe the best comparison: Howie Long 6'5, 270 He would go from DE to the middle at times.

I was harping Mack way before that draft, him and Watkins. I was happy with taking either one. Simply couldn't believe we passed on both of them. But I was on record. So i'm going on record now saying that Bosa will likely be in the running for defensive rookie of the year wherever he goes, unless it's some dumbass team that stands him up.

well remember coming out of college Watt was pretty much the same size as Bosa, maybe not as solid though. Bosa seems to be physically ahead of Watt at this stage in their careers. Now obviously what Watts done since being drafted is get bigger, stronger and faster. Something Bosa will have to do as well even though if he stays right where he is he'll likely have himself a nice career. But if he does commit to the game like Watt has, and that's a big "IF"...if he does his ceiling may actually be higher. Which is scary.
Watching old tape of Watt you see a great pass rusher. But I didn't see that ability that Bosa has to stuff an offensive lineman while checking the play. One of the reasons i'm so high on Bosa's skillset. His strength compliments his technique perfectly. He's an edge guy that I feel can and will contribute to run defense more than just setting the edge. Which is what we need. I'd be happy with us using as the 5 tech in a 3-4 but would be more happy if we put some 4-3 looks down and sprung a speed rusher on the other side.
-
A lineup that might look too bad is putting 3 DL down with Bosa on one side and Orchard on the other.....who could be the Jack type OLB'er we've been looking for. I just don't want to see any stupid 2 DL sets with Shelton, Bosa and two OLB"ers standing on the edge.
-
Watt was more explosive, bigger, and blew people up with strength alone in college. It's the perfection of his technique that has made him such an elite.
If the Titans think he has a higher ceiling than JJ Watt then he isn't falling past them anyway (but the only people who think that to be true are some OSU fans)
-
i'm calling zeke a no-miss no-brainer ROTY candidate for whatever team is smart enough to pick him.
book it.
the OSU faithful might be surprised but i feel apple will be just as good as bosa and he plays a more difficult position.

Ummmm... no.
At his combine JJ was 6'5 and 290. Here's his page...

I don't think Bosa will beat a single result that JJ posted.

wtf he was 290 coming out of college? and listed as a DE? No fucking way, I remember that draft he was like optimistically listed at 280. If he was 290 coming out of college than he hasn't gained a single pound since coming out? He was no fatass in college that got leaner. That just blows my mind if it's true. He was a 4-3 DE prospect, there's no way he was 290 at Wicsonsin.
-
anyway, Joey was benching 440 in HS and runs I the 4'7s while Watt ran 4'8's coming out. So I think the numbers are gonna be awfully close. Bosa should get in the neighborhood of 30 reps on the bench but i'm not really interested. The 225 has proven to not be indicative of field strength. Which when I look at tape Bosa looks to have more of than watt did. That's just an eyeball test. Watt looked like he got hemmed up by OL's easier than Bosa does.

oh and just read a recent article about Bosa that lists him at 285. I think there might be some pre draft shit that goes on. Cuase he ain't 285 and Watt wasn't 290

Combine weight is what matters. Watt was 290, we don't know what Bosa will be until then (but it probably is around 270)
But Bosa = Watt, no.
Bosa = Jared Allen, maybe.
(NFL.com compares him to Ryan Kerrigan)

I looked at tape of Watt a few weeks ago and frankly if the two were coming out right now i'd still be somewhat more in favor of Bosa. But that's "NOT" knowing what Watt ended up being. Just based purely on their college tape I still like Bosa better because he looks more honest in run defense. Watt looked like he just wanted to get upfield asap, which is fine in pass rushing situations which is why I would grade him a more overall pure pass rusher and Bosa as the 5 tool guy.
Obviously Watt became the do all, I get it. As for the comparison to Allen, no. Like Allen, but i'd take Bosa right now over Jared Allen at any point in his career "for the Browns". We don't need a pure pass rusher like Allen. We could get away with that if we have better LB'ers, which we don't.

I compare him to Howie Long. No one has disputed that.
Oh? WTF....weren't you guys around to see Howie Long play.

Way... Combine numbers can't be fudged.

Hand times can easily be 0.1 sec "faster" vs. electronic times, but if Bosa has a shot, it'll be in the 40.
I actually look for Watt's 10-yd split, vertical jump and standing broad to produce the biggest differences. Explosion out of a stance is the biggest physical difference I see in the two players.
I think JJ's will got him three or so final bench reps that I don't think Bosa has in him.

It's comparing apples to oranges - just like comparing a prospect 30 years from now to JJ Watt will be the same way. Howie was absolutely phenomenal at the time that he played, but we have no way of knowing how great he'd be today just because of the fundamental ebb and flow of the game. Watt is phenomenal today, but we have no way of knowing if he'd have been great then, nor if he would be great in 2046.
That's why comparing current prospects to guys that haven't played in a decade or more is just silly, IMO.

Well, the fact is.....Howie Long and Bosa are almost the exact same height/weight and play essentially the same position. I don't know about "40 time" as I don't know if they measured it much in his days.
And the last time I looked, the game of football is still all about blocking and tackling.
In terms of analyzing how he moved, what techniques they each used....as far as I am concerned it is still comparable if you analyze film.
It is like people say that you could not tell how well Jim Brown would do today. The fact is, Jim Brown would still be bigger, faster, stronger than today's RBs.
The league has gotten bigger in the last 40 years in the interior lines, but RBs, WRs, and DEs are not really any bigger. Deacon Jones played DE at 6'5" 275. Isn't it fair to say that is a pretty typical size for a DE today?
As far as the game....these player would have been smart enough to play the game today. Is it different? Sure, but Howie Long and Deacon Jones would have eminently been able to adapt. Even if Jones had to give up his famous head slap he could have played with the best of them.
So...to me, comparing today's players to former players is not silly at all. Anyone that doesn't want to do it just doesn't know the history of the game that well...or is lazy.
