The menu and stuff is still dictated by the school - it has has to have under a certain amount of sodium and sugars and such. It's not like the schools are buying some crap frozen mystery stew from the federal government.
Well, aside from the schools who get the lunches subsidized by the government.
The matter of kids not eating is because kids would rather eat pizza, french fries, and ice cream than baked potatoes, vegetables, and grilled meat.
That being said, I do think the federal government should stay out of it. Let the school districts, parents, etc. decide on their own what to feed their kids. Not like having some fries and a burger for lunch once in a while is going to make a kid obese - what she/he eats at home is a much bigger factor.
And what happened to recess, after we ate lunch we'd all go outside for a half hour/hour (I forget how long it was) and play basketball/football, run around - burn some energy.

Wow what a lunch.
When I was a kid we moved a lot. It's common for preacher's families to move. In high school I went to six different schools. At one school if you were unable to pay for lunch you had to pickup trays or do chores in the kitchen. Lucky enough for me I didn't have to but I felt sorry for the ones who did. They got teased real bad but not by me.

Except it isn't fries and a burger "once in a while". There are kids that would eat that every day at school for lunch.
I have no problem with regulation being placed on school lunches. Of course, if the school turns that into shit meals, then there's a problem (not shit in the way kids don't like vegetables, but actually just terrible meals). Whether that is the school district cutting corners or they just don't have the resources, idk. It shouldn't be that hard to put somewhat healthy lunches in schools though.
