I don't know why that's sad? It seems like the new conglomerate Republican party will be less tied to social issues that it has been recently.

People still care about economic conservatism but not so much about gay marriage.

The Democrats will cling to free sht and class Warfare.

    WSS

Sad because the right still insists on focussing on social conservatism, rather than economic. There's been general agreement on this board that a party selling social liberalism and economic conservatism would do very well.

I don't know about that. I think less emphasis on social issues would be a good path but not to the point of exclusion.

And remember the other party has a huge hard left contingent too.

I think the General Public would be okay with civil unions and some limitations on abortion blended with some financial conservatism.

There will always be a hard right and hard left.

Just asking the government to stay within its means and if it can't to accept a one or 2% cut is reasonable.

how? When a decent chunk of his own base can't stand him

He's finishing with the most votes in GOP primary history, not sure how that translates into "his own base can't stand him"

I said a decent chunk of his own base. Not sure the wild hill people coming down the mountains to vote for him in the primaries are going to counter the masses of disillusioned youth that have never voted and didn't terribly plan on until this Trump guy started mocking handicapped people and women. This is gonna be ugly Ed.

  • Think about this Ed. He'd still be where he is now if he had dialed down the asshole a couple notches months ago. Why didn't he?

A decent chunk of the base hasn't supported Romney, McCain, or any other nominee either.

#NeverTrump was proved to be a small minority of whackjobs listening to Glenn Beck, even those whack jobs will never vote for Hillary.

Clinton is not a likable steed that everybody will rally around - especially with Trump bringing up all the dirt nobody else wants to bring up, like today "Clinton started the birther movement" (which is true)

It'll be ugly, but the other way around.

  • He's bringing people out to vote like that Biker gang that's providing him extra security. So yeah it's all the conservative leaning people who usually didn't vote in the primaries but voted in the gen elect. They are not going to put him over Ed. Something has to happen to Hillary for Trump to win. She can basically stay at home and say nothing stupid and she wins. She'll just replay all the shit he's said for the last 6 months and she wins.

Not really Cleve...she can also use all the other candidates comments about Trump to add to Trump's own words:

I'll bet a bottle of fine scotch that Trump schlongs her in November.

  • And then the dems will tie republicans to their support for Trump and the republicans lose the senate:

  • Hillary Clinton spent a million dollars to "correct the record" on reddit, twitter, and facebook.

She has to pay people to defend her on the internet, she's toast.

  • The best thing Trump has going for him is Hillary Clinton. The dems couldn't run a worse candidate and that is why I think Trump can win in November. I was surprised when my ultra lib dad told me he doesn't even like having to vote for her and I never thought there was a democrat running for president ever he didn't like.

I don't think Trump will be too successful in getting Sanders supporters though not when Sanders himself is on record he will do everything he can to defeat Trump in November.

Ed i'm not in disagreement with you on how distasteful Hillary is. I'm just telling you, Trump has gone out of his way to make himself even more grotesque and distasteful. WHY?

For sure. Including most conservatives that have two functioning neurons in their head.

    Yup.

BB, I've been around a long time- and I wouldn't be surprised if we have a third party candidate show up, shades of Ross Perot in 1992. I really feel if "None of the Above" was on the ballot- it would win in a landslide. I can't stand Hillary- or Trump. BTW, I would have voted for Rubio.

That third party candidate just locked up the GOP nomination.

  • The only third party candidate I could possibly see getting any traction is Jill Stein - from the never hillary democrats.

    oooooh, so close.

  • Ok Larry, as a conservative with a functioning brain cell or two what have you wanted the president of the United States to do over the last 25 years?

And in what ways have you been disappointed?

And which third-party candidate that would siphon enough votes off to guarantee a win for Hillary do you think will make you happy?

    1) Not expand the welfare state.

    2) have a clue about international politics.

    3) make a feeble attempt to nudge Congress to get the national debt under control.

That's exactly it Steve- a third party candidate guarantees Hillary win. I think she's going to win regardless. Trump is appealing to the lowest common denominator- and it's not going to work- just MHO. My wife was mad that I voted for Perot. I wish Paul Ryan wouldn't have backed out.

My vote: Trump Hillary None of the Above X

What worries me about Trump is the old adage Absolute power corrupts absolutely- and I sure don't want a loose cannon in charge of the Red Button. When Trump wins the nomination in Cleveland- just send him on a raft across Lake Erie to Canada, for all I care. Clinton is even more crooked than her hubby. Why she'll win? Trump's rating with women is abysmal- and Hillary will garner a large portion of the women vote- just because she happens to be one.

The only saving grace is going to be- when the Republicans get trounced in November- they're going to have to seriously rethink their platform.

Incidentally which reflect liberals having 2 brain cells, not conservatives.
