New beginnings - Danny Shelton

So Danny Shelton's rookie season was as good as Phil Taylor's? Oh wait the played in different systems so that is the rationalization for Danny's lack of effectiveness. Must be the system that screwed Gilbert.
So not only do you clearly not comprehend the differences asked of Danny and Phil, you then attempt to equate that to CB.
Survey says......!! That's Retard.
edit: Take an interior player such as Aaron Donald, then have him play a 0-1 spot along a front now and watch his production drop like a rock. Must be because he sucks, huh? Coaching system and assingments clearly have no impact on player performance.
It's rare I call someone a dumbass, but you're treading in that water. I'm not by any means saying Danny had a great season, but I've yet to see ANYONE refute my point about a rookie being 'special' in that spot. So until someone does, pipe the fuck down.

Oh god no don't call me a bad name. No one said Phil Taylor was a Hall of Fame inductee after his rookie season. For anyone who watched both rookie campaigns it was clear that Taylor played better than Shelton. Regardless of system, or numbers for that matter, Shelton underperformed last season for his draft position. That isn't to say his career is over but he didn't play well last year regardless of how much we wanted him to.

I'm not sure why I bother responding, because until you realize that the bolded in inherent contradiction then its rather pointless carrying on conversation.
In your eyes, Danny under performed for his draft position. In every casual Browns fans eyes I'm sure they did. I expected the kid to come in and be what he was... a big kid who needs some time but showed he does belong in this league, flashed moments of potential greatness and at times was the space eater that turned ball carriers right to the backers. Maybe have a sack or two if he was kept in on 3rd downs but that wasn't a given.
Again and for the last time, please - point to me a rookie nose that came in and was 'special' or every bit as dominant as you expected. I have a feeling you'll be going back a long, long time.

DT from the lions. Rodgers?

It's not about being dominant. DT's taken in the top 15 last 5 drafts Danny Shelton 2015, Aaron Donald 2014, Star Lotulelei 2013, Michael Brockers & Fletcher Cox 2012, Marcell Dareus & Nick Fairley 2011.
So if you want to ignore the eye test which most of us "casual" fans say he didn't meet expectations and look at rookie stats here you go:
Shelton 19 tackles 17 assists 0 sacks
Donald 37 tackles 19 assists 9 sacks
Lotulelei 34 tackles 14 assists 3 sacks
Brockers 20 tackles 11 assists 4 sacks
Cox 32 tackles 7 assists 5.5 sacks
Dareus 32 tackles 11 assists 5.5 sacks
Fairley 9 tackles 6 assists 1 sack
BTW Phil Taylor taken 21st in 2011 37 tackles 22 assists 4 sacks
The 4-3 system lends themselves to creating more opportunities but Shelton couldn't even stay on the field for all 4 downs last season and Buffalo and Philly played 3-4. Again with more experience, better conditioning and a change in coaching he could have a long successful career but that doesn't mean last season was a success for him unless the bar was set low.

You've just killed your entire argument and funny enough, I mentioned Aaron Donald just a couple of posts up and you sure as shit have him as your first player in your stats as if he plays anything resembling the same assignments.
You also compare players in their 2nd year and beyond, none of them play a nose in the traditional sense aside from Dareus who got a few looks there in his rookie season, they've been under Jauron and 1 gap philosophy until Rexy came along. While having Mario Williams, Kyle Williams and Jerry Hughes.
Of the players you listed, all of them have talent around them in the front 7. You wouldn't take that into consideration I'm sure, honestly it looks as if you went off sack numbers.
Philly was/is the only team that runs a '34' in a sense and Fletcher is usually their pusher at the end spot, he was not drafted with the thinking that the Iggles first and foremost need to stop interior rushes.
I'm out of this conversation, spent too much time on it as is.

Well, I'll just say that I would be shocked if 8-10 Browns' fans wouldn't say that they were disappointed in Danny's season as a whole last year. Coaches, system, substitutions, scheme, Danny's extra weight, Danny's lack of strength, Danny's cardio....whatever excuse one wants to use. I like the dude and was thrilled we drafted him, but I am definitely one of the 8.
From the linked video, Danny is saying all the right things, and I hope he's sincere, but as someone said earlier, talk is cheap and we'll all know pretty quickly into the season if Danny is now a professional athlete, or still just the fat college kid who beat up on smaller college kids on Saturdays. There is a huge difference between the two.

And I liked the pick as well. I hope Shelton improves and becomes the next Ted Washington but last year he wasn't worth the 12th pick.

One more time - Danny played far more downs in college. His stats were a victim
of stupid platooning, running the dl's on and off the field. It was STUPID.
You stats are worthless to your argument, bacon. Most of the defense didn't play
up to par.
Different offenses, different offensive lines, how is a Browns NT supposed get a lot
of sacks when their wr's and te's got open with ease on short throws so often?
There is far more to stats that you aren't considering, while you are making wrong conclusions.
-
If we're going by stats, Shelton had a year that looked pretty similar to Haloti Ngata's rookie season. Shelton had one less sack, but also five more tackles, including more solo tackles.
We're just gonna have to wait this one out. A few years down the road we will be able to verify wether or not Shelton was a good pick, but I do have high hopes for his future.

BJ Raji was the 9th pick of 2009 draft to GB from BC. BJ's combine numbers were slightly better than Lava's & both are 6'2." Raji played at 337lbs. Shelton came in at 339 lbs but did not play at that weight. Raji played in Dom Caper's 3-4 at GB. Raji's 09 season was 25 tackles with 1 sack, his 2nd season in Caper's system lead Raji to his best season, 39 tackles with 6.5 sacks. O'Neil holds no Caper's game plan, but damn I look forward to Danny having a better season than last. Book It!! Great read Mr. Flugel's..

When he plays the same way, then we can crown him the new King of the middle. Until then he's just an out of shape player with a large middle.

yeah, too bad Danny Shelton isn't slim and trim like your Ted Washington was.

-
and slim and trim Vince Wolfork.... who Danny Shelton was compared to, and who the Patriots
were very interested in in the draft... but they had no chance.

"New England Patriots Schedule Standings Stats Roster Live Blog Odds Tickets Nose Tackle Danny Shelton Among Patriots’ Combine Day 4 Interviews by Doug Kyed on Sat, Feb 21, 2015 at 5:13PM1,090 Share this: INDIANAPOLIS — Players like Vince Wilfork don’t come around very often. The New England Patriots nose tackle is 6-foot-2, 325 pounds, can play 70 percent of defensive snaps and move all the way from nose tackle to defensive end. There’s a similar player in the 2015 NFL draft, and the Patriots have shown interest in the first-round prospect. The Patriots held an informal interview with Washington defensive tackle Danny Shelton on Friday night at the NFL Scouting Combine. The 6-foot-2, 339-pound defensive tackle showed positional versatility with the Huskies while recording 93 tackles, nine sacks and 16.5 tackles for loss. He also showed impressive stamina, playing 874 snaps in the middle of the Huskies’ defense in 2014. An AFC scout compared Shelton to Wilfork, and called the Washington product’s game “unbelievable.” Shelton currently projects as a top 15 pick, so the Patriots might need to trade up to select him in the draft."

I think there are some similarities, but I didn't have Shelton QUITE as good as Wilfork coming out of college. Perhaps it's because I live in Florida and saw Wilfork play much more, but who knows. I do know that Shelton played a high percentage of snaps in college, and I do know that he's a coachable kid that probably won't ever have problems off the field. He's a guy that's going to work and pay attention to his diet to avoid unnecessary weight gain. I could be mistaken, but I doubt it.
Shelton's rookie year was nothing special, and I don't think I'll get an argument from that statement. Was he horrible? No. Did he blow our socks off and make a ton of game altering plays? No. But...was there promise there? Could you see what this guy could possibly do with the right coaching and proper strength program? I completely think so. Now, I don't ever think Shelton will be a pro bowl player, but that doesn't mean I don't think he'll be a valuable starter for years to come. He might be CLOSE to what Wilfork was, but he'll never be Ngata (just my opinion). Ngata was/is a freak of nature and not something that comes around very often.
We have Mingo (first rounder), Orchard (second), Ogbah (second), and Nassib (third I think), as well as Kruger (11 sacks in 2014). Some of these guys need to play like their round would suggest, and others need to recapture the magic. We have invested in our pass rushing, and it will eventually pay off. I wouldn't sleep on Nassib.
But, in order to rush the QB, we have to step up on the DL. Xavier Cooper, Danny Shelton, Desmond Bryant...these are the guys that need to strap it on and make running the ball up the middle a tough assignment. Take up the blockers, get some penetration, and allow our LB's to get after it.
