Draft Talk

Locked The Browns Board

  • 1. Myles Garrett if the Browns commit to running mostly 4-3 (and it appears that may be happening judging by the pickups of late).

    2. Best QB available or RB Leonard Fornette if RG III is playing really well.

Garrett and Fornette are both once every 5 years or so players.

Fournette may not be the best RB in college this season. A lot of people think Chubb of Ga. or Cook of FSU may prove better.

  • OK, how about this scenario:

The Browns with their own pick and the Eagles pick actually get the #1 and the #2 overall picks in the draft!!!

FYI, it has actually happened 3 times in history that the same team had #1 and #2:

1992 The Colts picked Steve Emtman #1 and Quentin Coryatt #2 in the draft

1966 AFL draft: The Dolphins took Jim Grabowski and Rick Norton 1-2

1958 The Chicago Cardinals select QB King Hill #1 overall and then RB John David Crow #2 overall.

OK, for shits and giggles, if this happens what would you want to see:

    Cleveland Browns 2017 take:

    #1:

    #2:

    Insert your choices.

That is one scaringly pathetic track record.

True. Jim Grabowski became at best a serviceable Fullback. Only Crow had a decent career. Hill pretty much a career backup. Emtman good for a very short period before done in by knee injuries. Coryatt? Pretty much a bust. Only 8.5 career sacks for a OLB.

  • I really like luke falk this year but i've been hearing good things about mason Rudolph

    Shhhh....

I need Rudolph back in Stillwater next year.

I wouldn't hate this but even Fornette would need an o-line to function.

Les Miles's O does not impress me as one that takes full advantage of Fornette. I do like Chubb though. Tough runner if he says healthy this year. Not sure Cook shows the balance of the other two.

Les has a horrid QB and so teams are just going to load up the box to stop Fornette all year.

  • i thought we resigned colquiff?

    can't he throw too?

pays .50 off the dollar. nice analytics move. we won't have to worry about QB for another gazzilion years.

My tentative top 5 doesn't differ too much from that of the main talking heads - I'd go Watson, Kelly, Kizer, Mayfield, Rudolph. I think Kelly and Watson are the only two worth their salt in this year's draft so far, but I also do like Kizer as a fringe guy.

I like Rudolph's size, but that's really it.

I think Falk is a good QB but I don't see any transferrable skills - he throws a ton of floaters to his first and second reads and that's it.

I'm taking a principled stand against Rosen because he's a douchewallet, and I think Kaaya is absolutely awful.

Webb is interesting because of his size and arm talent, he could rapidly climb boards if he excels in the Bear Raid.

Then, the homer in me has to always pull for Barrett, obviously. Surprisingly, I'm woefully behind on small school/ under the radar guys. I haven't been paying attention, to be honest.

He had a rough day, for sure.

I just like him as a person, I think. I always have a soft spot for walk-ons.

Well, that might be Garrett and Peppers, no?

Peppers overrated? (lets see Woody gnash his teeth at that suggestion)

Seems like this has been the case in Baton Rouge forever... certainly since the JaMarcus phenom years.

Before Russell have to go back to Bert Jones???

A few of Kizer's throws made me take note of him.

I'm not even sure I like Watson as a franchise player. To me, every year we attempt to say 'here is the franchise QB pick'. When in reality none exist.

I am keeping an eye on Myles from A&M. Love his first step, not in love with his inability to shed blocks. Also, whoever 93 was for Alabama vs USC. I'll be watching him throughout the season as well.

BAMA 93 is a Senior named Jonathan Allen. Very much looks the part of a 3-4 DE.

Myles Garrett physically looks like a different player this year. Thought he still looked like a rail last season. Now? Listed at 270 and looks it. Best of all he doesn't seem to have lost a step.

Just realized I did not notice TAMU's #5, Daylon Mack, vs. USC. Last year you could not help but notice him.

Watson looked decent, but not special. But it's Week 1 so...

Allen is a machine. USC's OL was vaunted as the best in the country last week. Herbstreit singled out a play (one of many) where the front 4 collapsed the pocket in under 2 seconds with bull rushes across the board, with Allen leading the way. It's a work of art.

Mack is out of shape and inconsistent.

Auburn's defense is going to be very good and I believe Clemson was breaking in all new O linemen, so don't put all the blame on Watson.

  • And if RG III flops? It's quarterback. PERIOD. End of discussion. Anyone who thinks Kessler resembles an NFL quarterback at this point must have been hitting the Kessler heavy.

On that, I completely agree. Which is why I would've traded McCown for whatever draft pick we could get. Unless they're thinking that if RGIII flops, it will be nice having a good guy and good QB mentor around in McCown for next years #1 draft pick.

  • Garrett is a no brainier if he is there.

I like this Allen DE from Bama and either of the RB's Fournette, McCafferey, or Chubb.

The QB people need to keep their eye on is Patrick Mahomes. He comes from that goofy Texas Tech offense but he's got an absolute rocket, he's mobile, and 6'3 230. Led all the FBS in total yardage last year. I like him more than Watson and Kelly. Brad Kayya is pretty good too.

I don't know about better than Watson or Kelly but I agree Mahomes is a stud. Remember this is the kid Tech dumped Baker Mayfield for.

  • Watch more. Chavis runs a very aggressive DL scheme and counts on LBs to make most tackles in the run game. Ours sucked last year, so when Garrett blew up OTs, the necessary guys weren't there to fill the gap created. FTR, PFF graded him very well against the run last year. Why you chose to watch the third game of his true sophomore season against crap competition over the battles against Tunsil, Robinson, Coleman, etc., I'm not sure.

I think we can say after Saturday he's added the bull rush to his repertoire (got a sack on future first rounder Connor McDermott with it). I would note that Von Miller had 19 sacks as a junior with only a speed move.

That said, I don't know about him as a 3-4 guy but with our dearth of defensive talent, you change the D for him. Then again if you change the D, you're pretty set at DE. Quite the quandary.

  • "He has the speed, no doubt about that. Zero secondary/counter move so far"

Funny, I was watching the tape against UCLA and what struck me is how much he bullrushed the LT back and I thought *that* was his main move, with a bit of speed to go round the edge. Not too much of a hand fighter though, and doesn't really have the 'motor' that a lot of players come out with. Unless he's making the sack/tackle, he was very rarely around the ball carrier, and there were a few times where a bit more pursuit from him stops a cut back.

Side note - that Aggies D looked nasty, and/or the UCLA QB looked horrible. If they fix the concentration issues from the third quarter, that game is a blowout.

  • Well he rated out better in that game than any last year. And tops in the country over the weekend pff.

    http://tamu.247sports.com/Bolt/Grading-the-film-Myles-Garrett-dominates-vs-UCLA-47261047

PS-"doesn't really have the 'motor' that a lot of players come out with. Unless he's making the sack/tackle, he was very rarely around the ball carrier, and there were a few times where a bit more pursuit from him stops a cut back.'"

Watch again. They did a lot of double teams sometimes augmented with a "chip" by the RB. His job for a lot of that game was to occupy as many O players as possible so Chavis could send in the "crew". Smart DC. There is one play where he just throws the two blockers to the side and causes a bad throw by the QB.

Perfect example of "occupying" blockers for a "cleanup" sack by others @ the 1:31 mark in this recap. Throwing away the blocker into the chipper causing the hurry along with another defender @ 2:17 mark

And a triple to double team on him @ 3:17
