We need an experienced backup QB

  • Mike Vick - Rumor that Browns are interested. I'll take Derek Anderson however.

    Please say it ain't so.

To spur on other discussion. I spent two years in North Carolina (just moved back to OH this past spring) and the fans of the Panthers loved Derek Anderson. Flame me all you want, but I would take Derek Anderson over any of the "floating" options out there right now. He's experienced and has an arm that could stretch the field and keep up with our receivers.

he stinks. after he lost to the 2 worst teams in the nfl by throwing pick 6 after pick 6 the yr we went 10-6 and did not make the playoffs, i want no part of him...my wife said he got the yips meaning the first half of that season he was dead on however somewhere during the 2 part of the season he kept overthrowing the ball 10 ft of the receivers head or throwing pick after pick and that was that...i remember it carrying over to the pro bowl also and then into the cardinal where he really stunk...

Playing baseball with the Mets now.

  • Browns must be kicking themselves and I'm 99% sure they go after the best QB in 2017 draft. Just got to watch more college football this year.

I don't know if they are kicking themselves. Sure Wentz looked good but its not like he beat the 85 Bears on Sunday. Goff can't even beat out Case Keenum and something called Sean Mannion and if you watched Hard Knocks on HBO, you can see why. The guy has never called a play in the huddle in his life. He has no idea what he's doing. Draft a guy number 1 overall and he can't even beat out a crappy Case Keenum? Time will tell if the Browns made the right choice so we will see. Hopefully one of these college guys separates himself from the pack for next year.

I think a QB is a whole different thing than a DE or LB. He is the leader of the offense. And I am talking about when McC goes down (it is literally a when, not an if). Kessler is not ready to barely take an NFL snap. He looked like a deer in the headlights.....against 3rd stringers...in preseason.

Ha- RG III was pretty close to that look- against the Eagles. If we're getting blown out- sit McCown, and put Kessler in- 4th quarter garbage time.

As long as it doesn't become 1st quarter garbage time, lol.

Seriously you want young guys to get experience but not get killed in a bad situation. Sitting out a year or more behind a quality QB is best.....if you've got one handy.

  • Here's what really scares me. Hue Jackson told the fans several times that everyone needed to "trust him" when it came to things like drafting Cody Kessler and knowing the QB position in particular. Adam Schefter is reporting that Hue Jackson and Browns management were all over Jared Goff, RG III, and Cody Kessler. The QB's that our anointed moneyball morons DIDN'T want anything to do with were Dak Prescott and Carson Wentz. Now, I don't need to be told that we've seen ONE GAME of this season. I realize this, and I am NOT saying that Dak and Carson are the second coming of Joe Montana. But...BUT...If we strike out on RG III and Kessler, and I'm putting in a guess that we did, our staff is in deep shit.

Prescott has been playing behind the best OL in football, and with an elite running back, and a superstar receiver. Oh, and the cowboys lost.

Wentz' only game has been against a team everyone expects to go 0-16, with a secondary made of cones and a pass rush reminiscent of johnny manziel's pro day.

Goff hasn't played a snap because he's being made to sit and learn, not because he's so terrible.

Can we just chill with the sky is falling bullshit already? Do you honestly think any rookie QB would really be able to come in to our team with its leaky protection, anaemic run game and tissue paper defence and elevate us to playoff contention?

  • No.... but one might come in and show poise and promise...

yeah....that and he sucks and can't call plays for shit and doesn't know what the hell he's doing but other than that, he's looked great.

My original point was right on: I said: "what would happen if McCown gets hurt, we cannot trust the team to a not ready for prime time rookie.

Clearly the result of the game proved me correct. McCown breaks his shoulder and the HC dare not turn the team over to Kessler. He would rather a one armed McCown be in there. But after McCown was hurt, he wasn't the same. He was badly inaccurate due to the injury. He should not have been playing, but he had to.

We very well may have LOST this game because the team did not heed my advice of bringing in a veteran backup. Not a single point scored after Josh's injury.

Now, it seems, we may not need to bring in a veteran backup.....we need to bring in a veteran starting QB.

Stay tuned Gip. If Josh is out for 6-8 weeks, you may get your wish. Personally, we already have a guy on the roster with QB experience- Pryor. According to PFR, 20 starts. Not great, but are you going to tell me any of the retreads currently out there are any better? And at least he's mobile.

Pryor is more valuable to us where he is at this point: WR. Except for an occasional trick play, we have no business having him be our starting QB.

  • Of course, the Browns are now in competion: Brady out, Garropolo also now down with injury. Pats may be looking as well:

Setting aside the self-aggrandizing bullshit that might even make Ghoolie blush...

    • What changed that now requires looking for a "veteran starter"?
    • What were McC's pre- vs. post-injury stats?

    • NOTHING....we needed one before, that was the point of this thread. Or, actually, yes, something did change: our starter and our backup are both out with injury.
    • What were McC's pre- vs. post-injury stats?
    • 20 points in one quarter...2 TD passes. After that: no points, all kinds of missed receivers.
