Injury report in QBs
-
It's interesting that we will appear to have both McCown and Kessler healthy enough to play this week. Pending any unexpected injury announcements, both Kessler and McCown will suit up for us, and that's incredible considering many of us probably thought Kessler broke his collarbone and would be out for a significant amount of time. I'd love to tell you that this season is about fighting for a playoff spot, but in reality, it's all about evaluating our young players and trying to develop talent. We wouldn't be able to evaluate Kessler if he's hurt, so we appeared to finally get some good news on the injury front.
Kessler's first drive left a lot to be desired, but I love how he responded after the Pats' took the lead 7-0. Without the aid of any type of running game, Kessler and the offense marched right down the field, and then executed in the red zone. Kessler again showcased his accuracy and touch when he threw a gorgeous, looping pass to Hawkins who ran a killer route. The ball dropped right in with the sideline fast approaching, and Hawk reels it in for a big score. That's no small thing.
Like Mary Kay has said, we don't have much to gain by starting McCown if they can both medically play. I've been impressed with Kessler, but I still maintain the opinion that his ceiling is that of a career backup, possibly a good one. That's no knock on Kessler, and it's not a backhanded compliment. A good backup QB can mean the difference between making the playoffs or just missing them because of the frequency of injuries to the QB position. Kessler's arm just isn't strong enough to really drive the ball, and more importantly, he's so damn slow. The guy just can't escape pressure, and we don't exactly have the Dallas Cowboys' offensive line.
Like Mary Kay has said, we don't have much to gain by starting McCown if they can both medically play.
Screw MKC, This team & Hue needs a winning taste in Tenn. McC gives them the best chance to do so. Drago must break his arm off,to not go

Agree. And I think the coaches agree as well. Kessler did OK, but he was never meant to play this season, and he hasn't exactly been Peyton Rodgers-Brady. He'll go back to the bench if McCown is fit enough to play. Plus, with McCown back, Pryor on the deep ball comes back in to the game plan.
Either way, we need to make sure our QB doesn't get hit all the damn time.

How did we not give Jake Long a look sometime this season? Vikes just signed him to replace their two IR'd tackles on OL.

I don't think we sniff guys over 30.

BTW, and this has probably been discussed elsewhere but I haven't been around - the vikings now seem to have two legitimate starting QBs in Bridgewater and Bradford. Obviously Bradford is older by about 5 years, but he's only 28, he could be around for another 10 years or so if the vikes want him.
So, the question is, if one is on the trading block (as is likely), would you want either, and if so, for how much? Teddy's under contract for one more year, but with an option to pick up the fifth year of the rookie contract (I believe), and Bradford has one more year at a pretty high rate.

At 31 his already retirement eligible in the Browns's FO eyes.

if McCown and Kessler are both good to go, I'd rather see Kessler. McCown has balls, but when he plays hurt he hurts the team. I admire his willingness to gut it out but after he took that huge hit from the Ravens is when his play went downhill fast. McCown is a solid leader, but he's not the future for the Browns.
Let Kessler develop. Let McCown rest until he's 100%.

I read the Browns added OL Johnathon Cooper off waivers. He was a first round pick by Arizona in 2013 before being traded to New England. Is he any good?
He was claimed off waivers, so that should be a clue he's not going to come in and save the OL. He's also on his third team after being dumped by two very good ones in AZ and NE. He's also from *that* draft class, 2013, the worst by some distance in recent memory. The same draft class that produced top picks like Eric Fisher, Luke Joeckel, Dion Jordan, Mingo, and a whole laundry list of underachievers.

It can also mean he couldnt beat out some of the best lineman in the league. Which is still serviceable.

No, he would still be 3rd string QB. I don't think they want to bring Hogan up from the PS.
Who said anything about Hogan?

It's injury based. He was injured a lot in AZ, went to NE Where he was apparently 'running with the 1s' as they say in training camp, but then got injured and hasn't played since.
I remember at the time people were talking about him as the best overall prospect in that draft (ha!) but since he was a guard he was never going first overall. Ended up going 7th, which is still pretty impressive for a guard. *IF* he gets healthy, who knows?
-
Side note - if both Kessler and McCown suit up, say goodbye to Jesus.
What is CBJ's injury status?
As for Kess vs. McC... It is really going to come down to who can more effectively play hurt. That edge should go to McC simply based upon which side of his body is hurt.

Especially when that vet is mediocre at best.

If McCown and Kessler are of equal health I'd want to see Kessler continue to start and develop. That is, unless you wanted to heal up Kessler for a week and feed the wounded McCown to the wolves instead.
RG3 is a different issue. The Committee might want to see and evaluate HIS potential to be the franchise QB.

If Kessler is still sore, I'd give Josh a start just because it opens up the playbook a bit more, and Josh's throwing arm and legs are perfectly fine. Just need backup in case he gets knocked on his collarbone again.

IF McCown is healthy enough to start, and Kess is still feeling beat up- I give McCown the start until Cody is healthy. Then it's back to the bench with Josh. This is an evaluation year- we know what we have in Josh, Kessler not so much. At 0-5, we're not going anywhere this year. Determining what Kessler's ceiling is is going to be damn important come draft time 2017. If we think he's good enough, we almost have to take that pass rushing stud (that we sorely lack) with our high 1st round pick.

Just NO to that idea. Bradford has proven to be fragile, and the Vikes would almost certainly want to recoup the first round pick they gave up to get Sam. LOL we already have R(Glass) III on our roster anyway. The Vikes have SB aspirations- the only reason they traded for Bradford. The Browns are 180 degrees in the opposite direction. Plus Sam is gonna demand a top half salary- not what the Analytics guys are going to want to do.

Ditto on Kessler. I don't know about the Harvard Brain Trust & Hue- but I've already seen enough of Griffin to form an opinion. And that is- he's not the answer. A great athlete that can't decipher a defense fast enough. If you put Griffin's arm on Kessler- we'd have our answer.
PS- That stat from the other thread was interesting to say the least. Kessler got clocked @ 55 mph on the radar gun. The same speed as Russell Wilson and Joe Flacco. I haven't seen those two being accused of having lame arms.

Oh Brother.
Who the hell is going to start? Kessler?

Not bad for a couple weeks work Charlie. This does give me pause thinking about what this may mean if\when Griffin is healed up enough to play. I've already seen enough of Griffin- have to wonder if the FO has too.
We're not going to keep 4 qbs on the active roster. Griffin comes back, we'd almost have to waive Hogan and take the chance another team won't pick him up.

Ya, this smells like Grif isn't coming back.
I'm Ok with rolling with Kessler and Josh with Hogan's Heroes as the emergency.

It had not been brought up that I know of... and... no...
The QB trade rumor NFL Live tried to crank up yesterday was Chicago trading Jay Cutler to us. Cutler is fucking kryptonite... fool's gold... today's version of Jeff George... a tool with all the tools. This idea makes your musing seem attractive by contrast.
