NUCOR and USSTEEL baby I worked for both and have stock in both, they both shot up this morning.

And yes there will be winners and losers. The interest rates and inflation will be factors in the coming months and years, thinking about buying a house lock in now.

I think that is good advice on buying a house now with low interest rates...

  • that's a cheap shot, after supporting crooked ass higgardly so ardently.

If all companies benefit, that includes Trump's company. Which, is a question...

would he put his company in a trust, or whatever it is, to avoid any qualms

about a possible conflict of interest? I don't know how that works.. just wondering..

  • People panic and sell. Is the panic justified? I don't think so. Trump is going to have a very business friendly administration. It seems like as those panic and sell and stock prices dip it might be a good time to buy...although I wonder how inflated some of the stocks are already?

Some stocks and sectors will be somewhat overpriced you have to get back to the basics, P/E ratios (Price/Earnings), forward multiples, and remember corporate earnings are the backbone of everything.

As for small businesses it's things like availability of credit, manageable regulations and everybody's big problem healthcare costs that count.

We'll see how his administration will handle all of this but he should have a somewhat friendly Congress to deal with.

    Stay tuned!

Quite possibly domestic manufacturing and mining companies. Also fossil fuel companies that will likely see less regulation in the coming years. Got to be actively managing that one though, with instability in OPEC member nations causing price fluctuations. Coal companies probably a safer bet.

What a short covering comeback. I've been watching the markets since about 8 am not really that long before the 9:30 am opening the DOW 30 came back from -800 to -200 but shortly after the bell it leveled out.

10 am the DOW is +35 and the S&P and NASDAQ are similarly up fractionally about 0.12%.

BUT the overseas markets still a bit more uncertain about what's really going to happen to them in the long run.

Ironically the overall market is better than after the 2012 election.

SO WHAT DOES IT MEAN? Nobody knows for sure, will your 401(k)s and other investments take a long term hit? Will there be a recession or will the DOW hit 20,000 or higher.....nobody really knows because the election results were totally missed by the polling and media BIG TIME.

I say if you're a trader be really alert for the fallout BUT if you're like most of us and long term buy and hold I'd wait a little bit before making any drastic changes. We will have to see how our overseas friends and enemies react to all of this, they were probably more shocked than we were.

In other words it's still the market we really don't know. 😉

Whoops 10:20 am were now down fractionally, some things never change.

Not to mention the oversold state of the market in general...

The follow up momentum has carried the S&P up about 1% and the VIX down nearly 20%. Great day for traders and the HFTs are having a field day.

    Some of you guys know more about the stock market than me but it seems to me it would be a good time to buy some stocks. What Trump is proposing with less corporate taxes, eliminating Obamacare and less regulations seems like it would produce an economic boom. Right now the market appears to be responding to uncertainty...;

    @gftchris said:

Yup... Pharm and Healthcare in general are buys due to reduced threat and pressure. Banks, too, but as much for coming rate raises as DeReg... although the CFPB will likely be at minimum defunded.

"Uncertainty" is still there in general. This is a reaction to the replacement of the known negatives of the presumed candidate for those the elected candidate are believed to be carrying.

Case in point... Kansas City Southern (KSU) is down ~18% today. Their business? Primary rail operator carrying freight to/from Mexico. On the other hand... Arch Coal? Up ~8%. I'd be a lot more inclined to buy KSU today than Arch... but I won't do either.

Investors don't chase bounces... and don't catch falling knives. That's traders turf.

As for the "boom"... no hurry... they take time to develop. Just going to sit on most of the cash position (~25%) I raised over the last month for a while. May even add to it...

I just bought a house VA loan 3.14 percent.

The house is a great idea...

And great time to own protected industries whose protection may well shift into overdrive.

Not sure what was the "Cheap shot" (and I know you were not talking to me)... As to your questions...

Trump's businesses will benefit to varying degrees. His core business, Real Estate Development, will have headwinds in the form of rising interest rates. Can that be offset? Sure... if the rich get richer since he deals in prime real estate. An example is his new jewel, the old DC post office he converted to a hotel. You can get an inauguration package for only $800 per nite or so... but IIRC the minimum stay is 5 nites to get that rate.

All past presidents have placed their assets in "blind trusts" upon winning/assuming office. Truly blind trusts are managed by a third party of the President's choice. Any President will know, or at least can know, what assets go into the trust. What he should never know is what trades the trustee makes. Also the trustee should have no "inside info" on government actions that would impact the trust's holdings... positively or negatively.

What Trump has proposed is that his blind trust be run by his kids. While the degree any past trusts have been truly "blind" is debatable, and has even made the news from time to time, a family member running the trust has never been proposed before. Both conservative and liberal Trustees agree that his proposed arrangement stretches credulity past the breaking point, but the placement of a business as large and complex as his is a first as far as I know.

  • Heard one investor a little bit ago making his case for a boom based on Trump's call for infrastructure investment... said it would double under Trump and that it was fine for its added cost to "add to the deficit"...

Had to laugh that apparently stimulus by any other name is a good thing.

Ought to be an interesting negotiation with Ryan and the House Freedom caucus.

To the OP, as of 4PM, the market is up 200+. Wall Street apparently thinks Trump is going to be good for business. He'll have a friendly Congress to a point. One thing for sure, ObamaCare is as good as dead. I for one will be more than happy to attend it's funeral. For people middle income and up, it was distinctly the UN-Affordable Healthcare Act. Shopping & researching for my wife's retirement in a few years, to get anywhere near comparable coverage she has at work, it would have cost $900+ a month. Affordable? My ass. I still get POed the way Barack back doored it through Congress.

No denying the highways need attending to- Haven't forgotten that bridge collapse in St Paul. Locally, the I-75 bridge over the Ohio in Cincinnati is nearing the end of it's service life- and I've heard talk of about a $$$ billion to replace it. There's going to be a LOT of negotiating. Will the Democrats turn into the obstructionist party? Ha- at least Ryan won't have to worry about an Obama veto. 🙂

I hope Trump will realize that wall is as much pie in the sky as Sanders free college for everyone. As we found out, you can say damn near anything to get elected, the political reality afterwards is another story.

And Election Day +1, the DOW 30 had an intraday all time high 18,600+ but still closed up 257 (1.40%).

I've been watching this stuff all day, crazy!

    CNBC?

United Rentals had a nice day...

For a sure upswing I'm not sure there's a better play than Defense Contractors... Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, etc... I like GD for its relatively non-competitive involvement in Naval Shipbuilding in its mix. GD was up 5.4% today.

  • Infastructure is more than just roads, highways, bridges, etc etc. Still waiting to hear a federal plan on helping state and local governments combat the opiate and heroin epidemic. Needs more than lip service.

I would recommend it. In 1983 when I bought my first house the fixed 30 year interest rate was 10 3/4 percent. Who knows how much longer we will have the present low interest rates?

Actually my daughter bought her house at a great time a few years ago...low interest rates plus an $8,000 incentive thanks to the Obama (failed) stimulus. That was probably the best time ever to buy a house. Housing prices were down, interest rates were low and the government was handing out a check for 8 grand to home buyers.
