Taking a step by step look at the Browns draft
-
well, that is ...to a point. As in, rb in the first round? Canton Mike and I just saw that on tv this evening for pizza. RB ? When we don't need that?
I would think that we could draft Adams, though we need a FS more... just move somebody to FS and let him be all-pro.
Let's put it this way, would anybody be surprised if we drafted an outstanding TE to help the offense? Don't need a TE, but the offense would be helped greatly, and there are two of them who should go in the first round. Howard... and the kid from Miami. Sure works well for teams that throw to their TE's a lot.
Right now, drafting more pass rush ignores the serious problem at db.
But the first two picks needs to be immediate impact players. QB? Edge rusher? LB? FS? CB?
There are a LOT of fine cb's in this draft. Then there's the oline. Would drafting Moton, OG/OT at the top of the second also be an immediate impact player? I think so. I'd rather he be around at the top of the third, but you know how it goes.
I watch Allen, Thomas, Garrett, Hooker, Adams play with elite instincts and ability.
Seems that maybe Lattimore (forgot to mention him for the above reasons).. is also that smart a player. Offhand, seems like I could trade down with the Bears or Jets, and still get Hooker and Thomas. Nab a cb and Moton in the second....
It's just that the Browns' top four picks, especially the first two picks, need to be the type to come in and start, and make a huge difference in the Browns.
Maybe, just maybe, Flugels' Pat My homes, qb might be there in the third... if the Browns deem their qb situation doesn't require a new rookie starter.
Eventually, there won't be anything new to say about the draft, we've started so early, so....
Some one spike your root beer?
Word jumbles aside, it's a pretty well-reasoned approach with which I disagree in places.First, what pass rush do we have? Who brings reliable pressure? It's why Edge is our greatest need for a position not beginning with "Q".
Second, you generate pressure and you cut the time the QB has to make decisions thus increasing the percentage of poor ones. It makes any secondary better... immediately... even ours. Can we use help in our Secondary? Absolutely, but, as you intimate, the deepest area of the draft is going to push very good players into Day 2... both Safeties and Corners.
Third, we do need an RB, because we do not have a true power back. However, we have a good, every-down back in Crow and a good, passing down back in Duke. We just don't need one early as there are very good, powerful RBs sprinkled throughout the draft.
Fourth, we need a TE... one who can block as well as catch. OJH is going to be expensive, but I guarantee there will be at least one other one there Day2. He won't be OJH, but he'll be better than what we have.
Finally... adding to our OL is not an impact move on par with any of the above. We have the pieces... we just need to assemble them properly and then they need to stay healthy. A depth addition as early as Day 2? Might make sense, especially once compensatories roll into the picture, but it's still likely that targeted 2ndary help will be there and take precedent.

I do want to add an edge rusher, but we don't have to go with the #1 pick. I like Thomas better than Garrett. Meaner, more physical.
While I would like the intense pass rush, right now, the secondary is an open quick pass completion, some games, on every
single first down. How do you get to a qb, any qb, when he can take the snap and throw it to
a wide open reciever on the fly? A te that is completely uncovered in a zone? Offenses walk back
to the huddle laughing about how easy it is. Sacks will go up, also, when the secondary makes
the qb hold onto the ball. Sacks don't count when the Browns get a hand on a qb, but he got the snap
and threw the ball to a wide open outlet throw for a first down in two seconds.
Second, you generate pressure and you cut the time the QB has to make decisions thus increasing the percentage of poor ones. It makes any secondary better... immediately... even ours. See above. I keep saying I like Thomas, and also the Taco guy, but Garrett seems to be the choice at one. But how to fix the qb business,
... I don't know. Do you think safeties are top heavy? Cb's are deep..
Third, we do need an RB, because we do not have a true power back. However, we have a good, every-down back in Crow and a good, passing down back in Duke. We just don't need one early as there are very good, powerful RBs sprinkled throughout the draft.
Don't forget, we got Atkinson III, he's bigger... don't know much about him, but the question is more,
how high? To me, not in the first five picks.

Some mocks have the kid from Miami going ahead of Howard.... there's a few others that could really
make a difference...

Seems like the right side is not staunch enough, quick enough. Seem em get around Paztor, and saw
Greco get run over, Irving struggles here and there... I don't know. Having Bitonio at LOG, and Moton
on the other side of center seems like a huge improvement to me.If I could get him somewhere in the third round after our
first pick there.....
-
One flaw cal. I would put a six pack on Thomas being gone by #12. And like Tour I think Foster is gone already as well. Think long, think wrong. Who is the BPA? Period.
-
Foster is amazing - his instincts are off the charts, he makes plays busting
up offenses' plays.
If Tenn wanted to trade up to get Garrett, I could go with that. BPA...
I think that could be Garrett, and Adams, and Hooker....
and both of the TE's in the draft. And Foster. They seem to be
the ELITE players. You don't pick Trubisky on that basis, at
one OR twelve. Maybe nobody picks qb's in the top ten. That would
shock a lot of people.
Maybe the Browns go Garrett... and a top blue chippie TE at 12.
That would dramatically help the pass rush, and dramatically help the
offense all around. Njoku or Howard would help our qb's immensely.
Or better, trade down a few spots, let somebody draft Garrett...
and draft Foster, then a TE. You still help your pass rush, and you
still help your pass defense - Foster can do both.
Then two picks to fix the secondary in the second round.
-
I hope it's Myles garret but I reluctantly agree with ghoolie, Trubisky is a position the browns need
-
What warps my psyche, is that if we do go Trubisky, and I'm high on the kid,
he's going to need a terrific TE, and so will our other qb's, like Kessler,
who might start. Like Gronk. Tyler Eifert.....
But not getting an elite defensive player in the first round, means cb, fs, and edge rusher
with the next three picks? That's a quandary. Just one FA signing of a very good player
that improves the team would make a huge difference.

When you know your DL is getting after the QB, then you play differently as a DB.. tighter... more aggressive... taking away the inside first. If you don't pressure I don't care who is in your secondary, they will get burned. Recent example is when Dallas only rushed three on the final play vs. GB. As soon as I saw that I said "game over" out loud... and a 22-yard completion and a FG later, it was.
Second, you generate pressure and you cut the time the QB has to make decisions thus increasing the percentage of poor ones. It makes any secondary better... immediately... even ours. I think there are more FSs in the draft listed as CBs. So far I have heard of three CBs at the Sr. Bowl that Mayock has discussed being better suited to FS in the NFL.
Third, we do need an RB, because we do not have a true power back. However, we have a good, every-down back in Crow and a good, passing down back in Duke. We just don't need one early as there are very good, powerful RBs sprinkled throughout the draft.

Totally agree... not top 5... not even Day 1... maybe end of Day 2. Atkinson looked OK in the little we saw of him in 2016.
Fourth, we need a TE... one who can block as well as catch. OJH is going to be expensive, but I guarantee there will be at least one other one there Day2. He won't be OJH, but he'll be better than what we have.

I'm still in on Shon Coleman as our RT. Paz kicks inside and competes with Drango for RG. Greco, Fabs and Reiter duke it out at Center. Erving can fetch coffee until two RTs ahead of him, Coleman and Paz, go down.
My preliminary take is Moton looks like a waste at OG... he's an OT. He's one way we could go, but I'm loving this Temple OG Dawkins, who played LT at Temple and looks fluid enough to back up RT as well.
Trubisky is a position the browns need
Trubisky is not a position...

Executive 2: UConn safety Obi Melifonwu
"The UConn safety is really intriguing. He's freaky athletic and he's going to put up big-time testing numbers. He'll run low 4.4s (in the 40-yard dash) and jump over 40 inches. He can play in the slot as well. Huge upside.
... and he is 6'4 219... He's going to rocket up boards.
And then there's #4's TAMU consolation prize... Hall.

You can certainly get a good cb, fs, rusher with those next three picks. This draft IS deeper at those spots than it is at QB.
A Derek Barnett or Marshon Lattimore or Teez Tabor may be there at #12.
McKinley/Tim Williams/Charles Harris may be there at #33.
TJ Watt/Budda Baker/Adoree Jackson may be there at #52.
And yes, some FAs to fill in some gaps wouldn't hurt.

Well we had another who clearly came out of nowhere to be an elite DL for Seattle-undrafted free agent Michael Bennett. But I'm not convinced on Hall. He should have played better with so much double teaming of Garrett the last 3 years.

Stat-wise maybe, but how much was his production depressed by his assignments in the Aggie D? I saw evidence of this in Garrett's case, does it apply to Hall as well?
And have you guys screwed up Daylon Mack or was he a flash-in-the-pan? He was a non-factor in every game I saw this year...

They have replaced the strength and conditioning coach mainly due to underperformance of lines and LBs in the SEC as each season went on. We shall see if Mack gets salvaged out of that.

Caught some of Obi-Wan at the Senior Bowl practice, and he's impressive all right. Shines @ the Combine, 2nd round for sure.

cal... you asked before about what a DE can contribute against a quick passing O? I neglected to mention "hands up."
Send a couple minutes here... stay with it at least through the field level replay and freeze frame. I promise, it's slack-jaw stuff...
Garrett is going to jump out of the room at the Combine...

Funny you mention it - I watched that yesterday, don't even need to get to the point. How many DL can jump like that?

Why me and Gip see Franchise QB. The most important observation made here, and demonstrated is the way he does in fact go through his progressions to find an open receiver. Some have claimed he does not do that, that he focuses just on his initial target. But this clearly contradicts that belief. On some of these highlights he had extremely fast reads to find the 2d/3rd target.
(this announcer though is pretty lame)

Um very accurate, mobile, good pocket awareness, and noted he can toss the ball 50 yards in the air off his back foot under pressure.
We want Mitch! We want Mitch! We want Mitch!

Why me and Gip see Franchise QB. You have sharp eyes for an old fart... but a crap sense of "equal time". I showcased one play; you post a 13.5 minute video.

I watched that one as well... as I did Kizer's and Allen's and...
On the whole I like Voch's analyses, the points he makes ring true for the most part. Even for QBs, a position he states is not really in his analytical wheelhouse. (He's a "trenches" guy.) But what becomes abundantly clear after watching a few of his vids is that his sample size is very small.
He pulls a couple snippets from a couple cut-downs and talks over them as if he's not seen them before. Entertaining as hell... but not conclusively persuasive. He seems to be going for a volume of players covered rather than depth of coverage.
