The 1916 New York Giants not only had a 26 game winning streak, they also won 17 in a row earlier that season.

Remarkably, they finished in 4th place, 7 games behind Brooklyn.

That’s why SOMETIMES you need some time breaks or clarifications on some sports records if the games, number of teams etc are radically different....but baseball is the ultimate stats game.

That team was insanely hot and cold, if you consider that when they were outside those two winning streaks they were 45-88.

Home field would be nice but I really don't think it'll matter to this team. They win on the road or at home. With a decimated staff they took it 7 last year. Healthy pitchers and the added bats? Hello ring!

Indians manager Terry Francona says outfielder Bradley Zimmer has a broken bone in his hand, MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian tweets. To be precise, Zimmer has fractured the fourth metacarpal on his left hand, as Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal tweets. The injury occurred when Zimmer slid into first base and had his hand stepped on by Chris Davis in the Indians’ game against the Orioles Sunday.

    Ryan Lewis@ByRyanLewis
Update from the club: Zimmer has a fracture of the 4th metacarpal of his left hand.

We won’t know more about Zimmer’s injury until he sees a hand specialist tomorrow, but his broken bone appears to be a significant bit of bad news for an Indians team that has otherwise had plenty to celebrate lately. This is the second injury in ten days that Zimmer has suffered while diving — he came up with concussion issues after attempting a diving catch earlier this month.

    clevelanddotcom@clevelanddotcom
Terry Francona confirms that Bradley Zimmer has a broken bone in his hand. Says that the rookie will see a hand specialist tomorrow.

The 24-year-old Zimmer has emerged as a solid contributor in his rookie season. He’s batted a modest .243/.310/.389, but has created good value with his baserunning (he has 18 steals while only being caught once) and center field defense, resulting in a solid 1.5 fWAR over his first 100 games. Assuming Zimmer has to miss time, the Indians have a variety of players who could help in center field. Austin Jackson has ample experience at the position. Tyler Naquin, Abraham Almonte and speedy newcomer Greg Allen could represent other possibilities there.

    ESPN Senior Writer.....

Eighteen in a row for the Cleveland Indians! They beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-2 as Trevor Bauer won his ninth straight decision, Francisco Lindor powered his 29th home run and Cody Allen closed it out. The Indians have hit 37 home runs in their winning streak and they've been so dominant that this was only their third one-run game of the streak.

The last team with a longer streak was the 2002 A's of "Moneyball" fame, with a 20-game streak -- the 20th win was the Scott Hatteberg Home Run Game (the A's blew an 11-0 lead before winning on Hatteberg's walk-off home run). The Indians can pass those A's if they sweep the Detroit Tigers in a home series that starts on Monday. If that happens, they would tie the 1935 Cubs for the longest winning streak ever. The longest unbeaten streak belongs to the 1916 Giants, who won 26 in a row but had a tie game in there......

.....Anyway, this is simply awesome to watch. Against the Tigers, the Indians will start Carlos Carrasco, Corey Kluber and Mike Clevinger. The Tigers will start Matt Boyd, Myles Jaye and Buck Farmer. I know all it takes is one bad outing by a starter or one gem from an opposing pitcher, but given the way Carrasco, Kluber and Clevinger have been pitching, I'm calling: The Indians will reach 21 in a row......

......Down go the Los Angeles Dodgers. Again. After losing 8-1 to the Colorado Rockies, that's 10 in a row and 15 losses in 16 games, making them the first team in MLB history to win 15 of 16 and lose 15 of 16 in the same season. One thing we've learned is the answer to this question:

One thing worth pointing out is that during this 16-game skid, 12 of the 16 games have come against "good" teams -- above .500. When they went 56-11 from June 7 to Aug. 25, just 20 of those 67 games came against winning teams (and the Twins were under .500 when the Dodgers played them). They did go 16-4 against the good teams, but it's also true they benefited some from a soft schedule over an extended period.

One final note. The standings for best record in the AL:

    Indians: 87-56
    Houston Astros: 86-57

What kind of weekend did the Astros have? Even worse than the Dodgers. The A's swept them, winning 9-8 on Friday when they scored twice in the bottom of the ninth; sweeping a doubleheader on Saturday by scores of 11-1 and 11-4; and then winning 10-2 on Sunday with four home runs. 😉

FROM THE ARE YOU KIDDING ME FILE......

    Andrew Marchand  ESPN Senior Writer

    http://www.espn.com/blog/new-york/yankees/post/_/id/97161/yankees-have-the-right-formula-to-beat-the-indians-in-october

NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees could beat the Cleveland Indians in the playoffs. The past few days, including Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays, Yankees manager Joe Girardi revealed the method he will attempt to use, if given the chance, to take out Cleveland.

It might be viewed as a new line of thinking, but really, it dates back at least to the start of the last Yankees’ dynasty. The Indians just borrowed the formula last fall, with an assist from Yankees general manager Brian Cashman.

Cashman turned the Indians into the most fearsome team in the American League when he traded lights-out reliever Andrew Miller for a haul of young prospects 14 months ago. It worked out for the Indians, who deployed Miller as if he were a lefty version of the mid-1990s Mariano Rivera. The Indians used Miller in multiple innings per game as a nearly unstoppable bullpen weapon and fell just short of a World Series title.

It's now a year later, and in the next month, the Yankees could be the team that ruins the Tribe's dream season by using the old Rivera formula. True, it's 21 straight wins and counting for Cleveland -- an American League record -- but once October begins, everyone is 0-0.

The Yankees will make the playoffs, most likely as a wild-card team. If they take care of the Minnesota Twins next week in the Bronx, the Yanks will likely make it inevitable that they'll have home-field advantage in the wild-card game........CONTINUED IN LINK........

I think Girardi needs to worry about winning either his division or the WC....and/or winning the WC game....before he worries about the Indians.  Besides...the Tribe has not clinched home field.  If they won the WC game they could still be playing the Astros.

The Indians are reportedly interested in resigning Carlos Santana, who is a free agent after this season.
