He clearly didn't graduate with a business degree........

I can't see us going 4-5 over the next 9, which is the MINIMUM of what Hue probably has to do to keep his job.  Even that would place him at 5-27 over his tenure, which blows.  And I don't think he even gets to 4 wins this year.

His decision to decline a fifteen yard penalty in the first qtr when the titans had the ball on the 32 and give them a 4th and 1 was absurd....that speaks to his understanding of risk/reward and expected pt totals....just an obscene coaching malpractice decision.

If Hue staying or going was predicated on winning 4 games he would be gone already. It is and has been blatantly honest that wont happen. The question is does JH think the Sheet show is on the coach, the FO or both?

If it is true that  Hue wanted Wentz and then Watson and the FO went in a different direction you have to crucify the FO.

I agree the declined penalty today was a head scratcher.

Hue said at the presser he thought they would kick a field goal instead of going for it, and that they have a VERY good kicker. That logic doesn't make any sense keeping them out of field goal range. I wish it did. Hue is a good offensive coordinator probably, but leading the team and making overall tough calls, he seems to crack under pressure.

Hue must have watched the same college game I did yesterday... same situation arose.

If the situations were identical in terms of distance to go for a 1st as well as field position, then two coaches at two different levels got it wrong (assuming the other coach did the same as Hue).

  • it was such a wrong decision because it's WRONG whether tennessee goes for it on 4th and 1 or kicks a fg.   Who cares what choice they make hue? Either one is much crappier for us than 3rd and 16.

In college though, the team would have gone for it every time on 4th and 1...still the right thing to do is make it 3rd and 16 though.

    KIcked the FG.

  • That timeout at the end really sucked!

  • lmao... not sure why, but I am...

  • I think he's gone at season end, almost 100%

Whateva, on to the next one.

I'm not saying I want him gone or otherwise, but it doesn't matter at this point because I'm almost certain unless some miracle happens he's gonna get Sheet canned and leave a statement to the paper that says "I understand it's a bottom line business..."

  • Disaster. Im sorry ghoolie but ur wrong. The only way ill even entertain the idea is if the caveatbis keeping williams. The def is actually building something and im not even slightly keen on another scheme shakeup.

Even u have to admit this defense, while not world beaters...is actually not half bad. They didnt let henry and murray run all over them. The secondary is making some plays too. Thats been a pleasant surprise to me. Starting over next year "again"? Nope. No interest. We need to add veterans at some key positions, like DE...but all in all u have to admit that in just 7 games williams has built something serviceable. The defense actually looks like an nfl defense.

I have no issue with Williams. The D is badass. But it does expose Hue as ineffective at 1 - 22

What?  How many times have you said that you hate him?  And his D is a bunch of undisciplined blitzers running around out there?

Aaaanyway.  I think Hue is a terrible game managing coach...and have for quite some time...but he IS shackled with poor QB's and WR's in a PASSING league.  Even a real good coach would be scratching his head at what he can do to get a win.  This stockpile of losses that we've accumed over the last two years is NOT his fault.

Do I think he should be replaced?  Yeah.  But not because of all of the losses.

I really am wondering if it's the Chicken or the Egg.... I don't know who I'm more pissed at or blame the most, Hue on every single game day, or the FO giving Hue the players he has on every single game day.

....... and for what it's worth, the defense is watchable this year, and if truth be told, we would all have loved to have had this defense for any season over the last decade or so. They still seem to fold when we need them most, but overall, they aren't our problem.

  • Pass attempts: 3rd most in the NFL, 30TH IN YPA (plus 14 INTs, 6 more than the next worst).  Rush attempts: 20th in NFL, 15th in YPC

    Other division leaders:

Rams: 18th in pass atps, 7th in rushes, despite ranked 19th in ypc

Eagles: 12th in pass atps, 4th in rushes

Jags: 27th in pass atps, 1st in rushes

This speaks to playcalling.  These teams with young QBs STRONGLY emphasize the run game, and throw the ball far less than we do with developing QBs.  We should be closer to what the Jags do, but were calling plays like we have Aaron Rodgers.  Its very frustrating.

  • I'm willing to let the FO continue. It's too soon to move on from them, but Hue...?

I feel like he's proven he cannot put his players in a position to win, or adapt to his players' strengths/weaknesses, or call plays and be a HC, or manage a game...

There are many instances of a new HC turning things around in 1-2 years, but not new FO & HC... If I have to choose, I say bye bye Hue...

The horrible odor emanating from the field today was detectable in the stands Tour. And to top off another thrilling way to lose a game, Joe Thomas is probably out for the year. I would gladly have settled for a tie, but NOOOOO.

Hope your London sightseeing goes well. That game in Twickenham? Either load up on antacids, or drink heavily beforehand, and during the game. Howie and the G-Man will show you how to pound Guinness like a pro.

Browns run out of reasons to stick with clueless Hue Jackson

    Sporting News    Sporting News22 Oct 2017, 17:49

Browns run out of reasons to stick with clueless Hue Jackson
Hue Jackson can't settle on a quarterback, can't figure out the running game and can't adjust to injuries on offense. He's a major reason Cleveland has just one win in his 23 games as head coach.

The Titans did everything they could to hand host Cleveland its first win of the season Sunday. Browns coach Hue Jackson did everything in his power to flush the opportunity.

With Jackson's team now 0-7 after a frustrating 12-9 overtime loss, it's more evident that the coach is a big part of the problem and isn't contributing to the solution. And now that he's 1-22 overall in less than 1 1/2 seasons at the helm, it's also clear the Browns need to make a change before 2018, and maybe sometime soon in 2017.

Jackson came in with a lot of promise last offseason as an accomplished offensive mind and respected motivator, but as the team remains in its massive rebuild, he has mismanaged games and failed to maximize the talent he does have.

Week 7 against Tennessee brought his decision to turn back to rookie DeShone Kizer at starting quarterback over Kevin Hogan. Then, despite Kizer (12-of-20 passing, 114 yards, zero sacks) throwing better downfield (even with two interceptions), Jackson decided to bench him midgame for the second time in three weeks — this time in favor of Cody Kessler instead of Hogan.

Kizer still ended up being more efficient than Kessler (10 for 19, 120 yards, two sacks, INT), and the Browns again couldn't generate enough points to win a game. Deploying three struggling young QBs means there's no chance for any of them to truly develop or find a rhythm, which will further sink an offense severely lacking reliable skill players.

Indeed, the problems go well beyond quarterback. Jackson has been adamant about trying to get slumping power running back Isaiah Crowell on track when receiving back Duke Johnson Jr. has been the Browns' best source of offense. Injuries to the wide receiver corps have kept Cleveland from settling on a go-to guy. You would think that would make Jackson feature his tight ends more in the passing game, but despite their athleticism, David Njoku and Seth DeValve have been treated more like flashes than players with substance.

There's a desperation to get too many players involved, and many players are being overwhelmed as a result. The random rotation of QBs contributes to the lack of chemistry. Even last year's mess of Kessler, Josh McCown and Robert Griffin III looked a lot cleaner because of veteran targets such as Terrelle Pryor and Gary Barnidge.

Sure, it was Browns management that let Pryor walk and Barnidge go, but the brain trust went further away from recycled veterans because it trusted Jackson to lead the youth movement. The only thing he has developed is a disaster, one in which it appears he has no idea what he's doing.

That cluelessness has carried over to decisions not involving the offense. On the game's opening drive, with Tennessee facing a third-and-1 at the Cleveland 32, Titans left tackle Taylor Lewan was flagged for a 15-yard facemask penalty. Instead of accepting the penalty to push the Titans out of field-goal range, Jackson declined it and made the Titans go for it on fourth down, only to have his defense jump offside. Four plays later, the decision had cost Cleveland three points.

Jackson isn't complementing the other side of the ball with his game plans, either. The Browns have fielded a much-improved defense — especially against the run — with young front-seven standouts such as Myles Garrett, Danny Shelton, Christian Kirksey and Jamie Collins. All of those players, along with an overachieving secondary that's missing top cornerback Jason McCourty, made big plays to give Cleveland a chance to steal the game.

Yet, within the game flow, the Browns' staff didn't play to this performance. The coaches again were too aggressive early and too conservative late. Such a volatile mix of bad situational football and a lack of creativity makes Cleveland extremely easy to defend; the box scores and personnel usage look similar every week, down to (insert QB here).

Jackson's desperate attempt to get a second win in as many seasons has, in a way, led to uncertainty about everything. Not having command and confidence is the worst look for an NFL coach. He's overwhelmed in the job to the point he'll probably be better off being relieved of it.

Taking the offensive play-calling away from him and giving it to Al Saunders won't create the necessary spark to win a game. The Browns' brass should be looking at Jackson and deciding it has seen enough — and that it should want to make its latest coaching change.

Regarding Williams, I was wrong. I like him.

Regarding Hue, as I said in a couple earlier posts, it isn't just the losses, but when you take the entirety of his performance, the loses add to the justification for firing him.

As you start considering the kind of players the FO has given Hue, and other such issues, you create a broad spectrum of culpability for the mess this team is in. That, then leads to one of two points of view, and neither of them is good. a) Everyone has culpability, so lets all work together (and what? Keep screwing up?) or, 😎Everyone is at fault, so fire everyone.

If we were 3 - 4, Hue is still a bad coach. He just has too many negatives against him. Scapegoat or not, he has to go. On a side noe, he FO has provided some pretty decent players for us. I think the FO is one QB away from being considered a good FO.

  • That article says it all D Bone. Hue is obviously not HC material plus he chokes under game day pressure. Either give him an OC or send him packing.

Ag, I don't disagree with benching Kizer. MHO? Hue's in full panic mode- (though he'd never admit it) 'cause I figure Jummuh read him the riot act. I don't even think hiring (or promoting) an OC is going to save him. He's trying to micro manage the offense. Too much going on to be a head coach and a qb coach at the same time during the game. The Titan's D isn't exactly going to be confused with the '86 Bears, and all you can get is 3 FGs? General lack of pressure on Mariotta aside, the D played their hearts out, and we still couldn't win. DUH- 4th quarter and OT- me and my pal could see the Titans were stacking the box majorly- did Hue adjust his play calling accordingly? Not that we could see.

I'm not sure how many more fiascos it's going to take for Haslam to step in and tell Sashi enough is enough, but a London blowout by the Vikes might be enough to do it. Bye week, and it's bye-bye Hue. Williams takes over.
