Apathy Setting In

The Browns Board

  • I have to admit I suffer frI'm it to say me degree. I still watch all 4 quarters every game but have given several sets of my lower level tickets away. In crappy weather or just after traveling all week I can't bring myself to do the 4 hour round trip to the stadium. Leaving home around 930 and not getting home till 630 or so just isn't fun right now. Even when watching from home I don't host guests like I normally have in the past. Having said all of that , call me a homer but I am jacked to see Kizer to Gordon this Sunday. Think I might just host a little BBQ Sunday.

  • Speak for yourself Gip. I drove 30 miles from LaPlace to New Orleans to hang out with the Browns Backers there.

I flew to houston and dropped $400 on that game.

can't justify doing it for the browns/chargers

  • I'm betting your post Gip describes a high % of Browns fans..... myself included. I remarked in the Tavern yesterday that I was offered 3 free tickets to this week's Chargers / Browns game and I politely declined as I refuse to give the organization a single penny other than the percentage they get from my DTV NFL Package.

The last Browns gear I purchased was during the Butch era. I almost bought a hat during Pet's 7-3 run, but didn't want to jinx it..... Lord, could you imagine if I made this worse with a jinx?

But yea, apathy has set in for me and with the Rams being back and lighting it up, my apathy is fading away slowly and being replaced with "Who give's a schit....... and when are the Rams on?"

I was planning to go to charger game since it is only 9 Miles or so from my house and in my birthday weekend but not so much this year.  Not too excited this year.  ?

Apathy setting in? Yeah like rigor mortis, the third stage of death, but.......

.......just think for a minute guys and gals "if" this team would think about or even leave you will NEVER see professional football in NE Ohio again except maybe in Canton once a year. Worse yet maybe an influx of new steelrz fans!  😮

Because your feelings are not trustworthy?

No way is it a matter of not caring. It's accepted because they understand that what they are putting on the field is very hard to love. They know that only winning will bring back the fans... that only winning will bring back the love.

But they also believe, as a few of us here do, that they are on the right path... even though it is more painful journey than they anticipated. They are the ones starting to formulate our Big Board. They are the ones with one eye down the road. And they are dedicated to not just bringing back the love in the near term, but sustaining it for the long haul.

A winning team has people who can step in and perform at ALL levels of the roster.. there's always a Collins blowing the MCL mid-season but the backups need to maintain.

We've never been able to do that since 1999 - until now.

Everyone on the OL would start for 95% of other teams. OK, maybe not Tretter.. which should show everyone that FA is less of a hit% than the draft, so there's never an option to "go buy all the FA and endless winz"

DL may not start for all teams but they would make the roster.. and remember Coley was UDFA who's starting over our draft picks who remain talented.

Yes, there's still holes - but you can't fix everything immediately....... that's an erroneous assertion.

Quoting Hue's browns w/l record is meaningless without context.  Pop quiz: What was Bill Walsh's record his first 2 years at SF?

2-14 (Hue would swallow a nugget of hobo Sheet to have two wins at the end of the season) then 6-10 (Hue will never win that many games as a Browns coach).

Definitely bro, lets compare Hue Jackson to Bill Walsh, better yet, lets compare him to Vince Lombardi and Paul Brown. Did Paul Brown hug Otto Graham or Vince Lombardi hug Bart Starr as hard as Hue hugged McCarron? Hue must be a damn genius..... And Sashi must be a damn genius.... and Depo is a genius too.... It doesn't matter that we don't know what they're doing or what their plans are, because battered women like you believe in them when their record says they've won 1 game in two years.

  • @the-gipper said:

Its true.  Apathy is setting in.   Yesterday I could not get together with the guys to watch the game.  I had other, more important things to do.  Just making other things a matter of priority over watching the Browns is one particular sign of it.    Then, when I came home I turned the game on briefly, saw the Browns getting hammered by like 2 TDs, then said "Fuyuck This Shizer", and turned the game off to do something else.

So, this Browns organization reaps what it sows.....a fan base that to a great extent may not even want to bother watching your games.   This is on Jimmy, Sashi, Hue.  This is their creation.

Why is it that somehow I get the feeling that these guys do not care at all about the fact that they are alienating their fan base.  As long as the owner is getting his TV revenue....he perhaps does not care that he is losing money on ticket sales and concessions etc.   The GM does not care about winning or losing...only about if he can continue his process....and try to supposedly "win" deals that he makes.    The coach seems oblivious to losing. While he may superficially care....he is getting paid in two years of doing this more that what most of us will make in a lifetime.

THEY seem to have an apathetic attitude toward winning.  Ergo...why should we, the fans, have anything but an apathetic attitude toward the team.?

And just out of curiosity....does anyone know what the local ratings are for the Browns?    I suspect they have seriously deteriorated over the last couple of years.  Deservedly so.

I think the core of the problem is no one truly knows what the hell this FO is doing. They never explained this process, just talked about it vaguely. Like oh, we'll be good in 2018 and really good in 2019. Sashi's flaw to his core is his overconfidence. He gives off this vibe that he always thinks he's the one who's right no matter what. Sashi, Hue, and even Jimmy don't seem to care that we've won one game in two seasons. They've also done nothing for arguably one of the best fan bases in the world. Sashi and Depo think they're smarter than all of the other NFL Execs by doing things such as trading down and selecting Corey Coleman, Trading down and selecting Peppers and Njoku, and gathering pick after pick. Well, times almost up. Everyone said we were supposed to be competitive next year, but if we bring in a rookie QB, even at #1, how is it possible we even win six games? Us fans, will have to go through the worst record in a 3 year span in football history, and why? Because a few Harvard guys have some secret plan they don't want to talk about that consists of our owner spending one of the bottom tier amounts of money on his salary cap for multiple years.

And for those of you who defend to the core the slightest criticism or analysis of what this current browns organization has done, how are you so sure we'll make such a splash in free agency next year? How are you sure Jimmy, who spends the least on his team for the past few years will drop big money to bring in playmakers? And how are we sure those FA playmakers will want to come here, and that the youngsters we have aren't counting down the days till their rookie contracts are up so they can actually play for a team that wins. None of you are sure, and all of you are guessing about the plan.

Depo and Sashi have changed the Browns from a low-tier NFL team into an NFL farm team full of youngsters to train them to someday be competitive in the NFL. When the Philadelphia 76ers had the high picks, they took Ben Simmons and Joel Embid. They didn't trade down and pick a bunch of mid tier players. The problem I think is that Sashi and Depo were afraid to take a QB high, because if they did and he failed, they'd be fired. That's why we didn't get Watson or Wentz. I'll admit I wasn't excited when I learned a lawyer would be leading this front office, but I was optimistic. At our current record, defending everything they do to a T is insanity.

My dad, lifelong Browns fan no longer turns them on during Sundays. I for one, am not going to put up with 1 win in two years, or 2 or 3 wins next year. Even F#$%ing Tim Tebow said it. "If you pick in the top tier year and year and trade down, you'll never create a winning team").

Sashi and Depo aren't the smartest guys in the world. What have they proven in football? Blind faith is silly, and Sashi should be demoted immediately and someone with football brains instead of a law degree should pick the damn talent.

The worst record in 3 year history, and a chance at winning 3-6 games next year, and (maybe .500) in 2019 and some of you are still viciously defending it.

It's like some of you are battered women, and you keep coming back to that Ex who cheated on you and was a b@$%^, it's just that Ex is named Jimmy Haslam.

This is all speculation, including thinking Sashi & Depo believing they're "smarter" than anybody else. You're just searching for an explanation for what you perceive is a FO that hasnt done ANYTHING positive for this team & their future.

I'll never defend EVERYTHING they've done, but I also see positives that others seem to ignore. E.g, drafting Garrett (BPA) #1; recognizing winning STARTS in the trenches and building solid lines; developing our young talent.

I will say this... we've been very poor addressing the QB situation, and Hue has proven he is not as good as was advertised. Also, we cant expect another class of rookies to significantly improve our W-L record w/o adding SOME vet leadership on the field and in the locker room.

With regard to apathy... I've been there for 4-5 years which is why I'd rather stick to some sort of continuity bc it is hard to get myself engaged as a fan when every 2 years is a new " rebuild" that I know will not turn this team around any faster than if we just stay the course, at least in the FO.

I guess I also EXPECTED us to suck pretty bad for these first 2 years...

They've done positive things, and some head scratching things. I'm not blaming the FO for everything by any means. Taking myles was a no-brainer. Trading down a few times was a head scratcher and if we do it again next year i'll head scratch it again. it's hard to #trusttheprocess when the process so far has resulted in the worst NFL team in 3 years in history. We can keep making up excuses for Sashi, Hue, Depo, and Jimmy, but next year they have to hit on everything, otherwise we can't continue to play this checkers game up through 2022.

So continuity with the worst FO/HC combo in 3 year NFL history is what we need because they will turn the team around faster than anyone else? The Rams fire Jeff Fischer after a subpar year, yet we keep Hue at this abysmal record and Jimmy doesn't even address that he doesn't have an OC and is in over his head.

The Rams hired a new HC and they turned it around pretty quickly. There's been lots of teams that turned it around without becoming one of the worst in history first. I'm not searching for an explanation when Sashi and Depo are doing something that no other FO has ever done with the way they gutted everything, and quite frankly, they're doing a great job at the opposite objective of football, which is losing.

How about the right GM or talent evaluator would turn this team around. Sashi and Depo can stick to aquiring assets and being a lawyer and a math guy and the football people make the picks. The logic that people have stated like war that "we've lost in the past and won 5 games a year so this is better" is all built on false hope that this will work. If it doesn't work, it'll come crashing down and we'll continue to look like the biggest joke sports has ever seen. If they are brilliant genius' and actually make it competitive i'll gladly eat my words, but if we win less than 4 games next year, I think my head will explode if anyone continues to defend them to the T.

I went to that game too. Still kickin baby. Go Browns

  • Here is the thing to remember................ football is funded by fans.........fanatics........................people, you, me, all of us, who continue to buy the sports product without any regard to common sense, or reasoning that applies to other purchases in our lives.

WSS hit the nail on the head and I think this is a wake-up reality check for anyone who thinks Browns fans are somehow special or different from other fans. The Steelers once couldn't draw jack, if they go 3 - 13 they again won't draw jack, just like the current Browns aren't drawing jack.

Haslam is no dummy, and none of the other owners are either. A winning team erases all the doom and gloom, it erases woes about how we no longer have a lifetime winning record...blah blah blah............... it even eliminates the opposing fans who say...YOU SUCK..............because once you are winning there is no insult in saying to us.........YOU SUCKED LAST YEAR............nobody cares about last year............do you? Of course nor.

If a team could destroy it's fan base by sucking, no financial interest with a lick of sense would buy an NFL franchise. However frustrated Haslam is, he still has the upper hand.............he knows that some wins will bring the party back to a full boil and all the pain will be forgotten. Can you imagine the Browns winning a SB? You think 1999 was a celebration?

Apathy? Yeah, sure, some of us are taken by it, but we remain here. Will some fans decide to call it quits? Sure, but a fan base has never been a static body. People have always come and gone. You win, you get new fans, you get some former fans back.

This team, and franchise suck as bad as the New Orleans Aint's......but really, do we ever hear fans and announcers talking about those days? Of course not, because they don't lose any more.

As horrible as the Browns experience has been....as Steve pointed out, a win streak and all is forgotten.

What is this "win streak" you speak of, earth person?

  • Apathy? Really? Who cares?

  • In terms of apathy, I've already planned items for the next two weeks that are not around watching the Browns. It's the best time of the year between the holiday and where I live (south florida), and watching the Browns is low on the list at this point.

In terms of the FO, I do think I have a beat on them, to a point. I think this office from the beginning went with the dynamite method of rebuilding. It was bold, and frankly I wasn't against it. I have no doubt that if we had a guy like McCown, Hoyer, etc this team would have 1-3 wins (see SF before they traded Hoyer, the Jets now, etc). However, I think the FO said "Shmuck that" and went with the home run or strike out approach to the first two seasons.

The problem with that is that you have to start winning eventually. If they don't eek out a 2-3 win season (unlikely), there's only so much rope to have slack before it has to be cut. Haslam looks like a laughing stock.

All you say is true, but again, should for whatever reasons the team again becomes a winner, all this apathy will be long forgotten. We really wish we could punish the organization, beat the schidt out of them, embarrass them publicly,  but at the end of the day, we are all like whores. If the team starts winning, we will return, as we always do.

I have a hard time giving the FO a positive for drafting Garrett....my mother in law who hasn't watched an entire football in her life would've picked Garrett that pick wasn't exactly rocket science.   The class of rookies and FA that we added still have this team at zero wins.  The team isn't any better than it was last year.  Some pieces are better but as a whole it's worse than last year.

Sucking pretty bad is one thing.  I didn't expect playoffs or anything, but I expected something better than 0-11 and there isn't a win in sight.   Anyone who thinks we are going to beat the LA Chargers of Carson this weekend is crazy.  This isn't the same Chargers team we squeaked by last season.  That team had packed it in, the season was over and still probably should've won that game.  This years team is in the hunt for a division title and playoffs.  Rivers might throw for 500 yards on this defense this week.
