I didn't say they were yours, but honestly, they don't indicate anything of substance. Any team that has a prolific offense is going to have one of the best defenses in the NFL simply because that defense will play less downs, have the opponent in horrible field position, AND because the opposing O will generally be playing catch up, will be at a disadvantage as to the play selection available.

A great offense makes life easy for the D.

Against a great O today, the Minnesota defense looked like pure schidt; average; not much better than the Browns.

OFFENSE wins championships................................Offense makes the defense.

Both defense and offense benefit from each other, but what is in bold is simply wrong. I won't go further than THIS YEAR, when Patriots had #1 offense and #32 defense for the first 6 games.

True. But does it make OL meaningless? Hell no. Yesterday Minnesota could have easily lost the game just because their OL didn't give even 2 seconds to Keenum to make a play in second half.

I hate to jump into this pile of do-do but there is a HUGE fact being overlooked by certain individual(s).

The formula for sucess in the NFL (and similarly in other sports) is the right combination of:

Offence, defense, special teams, coaching, FO decisions, injuries and luck to briefly sum it up.

Also to be noted in years and decades past the defenses had more success compared to today in this concussion driven tweaking of the rules and the referees emphasis on safety in calling all aspects of the game this benefits the offenses more than in the past.....and not just in the playoffs.

Now let's all go out and have a caffeine free, low calorie, GMO free, gluten free, not too hot or cold beverage and chill out. 😆

  • Sure.....offense wins championships.  Every team has to have an offense....and every team that wins has to play offense.  And that offense must try to score more than the other team's offense scores.  If you score 15 points and the other team scored 10...then the offense helped win.  If you score 45 and the other team scores 42...then the offense helped win.

Boy....and some people make it sound like that is hard to figure out.

  • Wait...

Phoolie is taking a victory lap?

    Really?

  • After tons of research I've come up with a theory. The teams more likely to win score at least one more point than their opponents. Whether that's accomplished by defense or offense or a combo of the two may not matter ?

So, if the Saints had played better defense on the Vikings last drive they still would have lost?

The Vikings defense kept the Saints out of the endzone on their last drive and forced a FG. The Vikings defense held the NFLs best offense to nothing for 30 minutes. You want to ask the Steelers about defense? They allowed the 16th ranked NFL offense to score 38 points on them. http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/teamoff Ben couldnt throw enough TDs with that hole in the boat Pitt defense.

The offense won the football game. Checkmate.

Or we could look at how many times Brees got sacked (inclusive of a fumble lost in the pocket).  That matters in close outcomes.

Think about how many years League MVP QBs have never won the Superbowl.

Today's rules favor passing games to promote more scoring so YEAH, you have to have a strong offense to compete.  The difference between Pittsburgh and Sacksonville was 1 team stopped the other on 4th and 1, scored on Ben's fumble and picked off Ben.  There's your point swing that mattered more than Ben's passing stats to the scoreboard favoring Jax.  Meanwhile take a look at how many times Jax turned it over.  The last time Pitt won a Superbowl, the biggest point swing came when Arizona had the ball at the Pitt 2 yard line.  James Harrison got the pick 6 right before the half and it was HUGE to their margin of victory.  THIS Pittsburgh team wasn't complete like that.  End result?   Offense couldn't win their championship for the second straight year.

  • Ya..... so two years ago when the Broncos steamrolled over everybody in the playoffs it was all about Peyton Manning's legendary super bowl performance of 13 completions for 141 yards and an INT.

Well yes that is true. The MVP went to the wrong person obviously.😛

Your assertion that only offense is substantive is substantively incorrect.

The defense lost the football game.   (I assume you are talking Minn/N.O.).   You have a lousy breakdown on defense...you lose.  You whiff on a critical tackle...you lose.  You suck on defense...you lose....no matter how good the offense is.   Best case in point:   Steelers/Jags.  Steelers have a great offense that played great.   Steelers have a bad defense that sucked so bad its great offense could not win that game.

Checkmate...for the rest of your life.

  • @boo-fagley said:

The Achilles heel for the Steelers is their defense and offensive lines. Pittsburgh used to have one of the best OLs in the league. Not so any more. Ben was under constant pressure vs Jax and he has been constantly sacked and battered over these last few seasons. The Pittsburgh DL was also a force and critical for a 3 - 4 to keep the LBs free to make plays.

Well...I kind of disagree.  I think the Steelers OL is still top notch...particularly because they have some very good players...and an outstanding OL coach.

I understand, if fact, the he...Mike Munchak...is being interviewed for some of the HC openings...perhaps Indy, perhaps Arizona.  That would be good to have him out of the AFCN.  Because, like with finger LeBeau before him....a great deal of the Steelers success has had to do with their top notch assistant coaches...and not necessarily with their HC.

  • he Steelers OL is fine. Playcalling is the problem. I say it over and over, NO FIVE MEN CAN BLOCK 9 IN THE BOX. When you have 4th and a foot, facing 9 in the box, and you call a pitchout, there is no OL who ever lived, that will make that play a success. An OL is only as good as the play calling.

The Steelers OL is fine.  Playcalling...perhaps in a few instances was off base in that game.  But they still put up 42 points.   Steelers problem is a suck arse defense.

    Defense loses Championships.

Go back and watch the play. There were not that many in the box and the CB reacted immediately to turn the play back in. There was only one LB and either the sneak or Bell going forward would have gotten the 1 foot. It was stupid both to call and for Big Ben not to overcall.

  • Pittsburgh scored 42 points - which is usually really good in the post season. Their QB threw 5 TD passes to just 1 INT and threw for 469 yards at a comp% of 63.79, which is the 2nd most in NFL playoff history. Ben Rapen only got sacked twice but the fumble went for TD Jax' offense didn't need to score.  The INT and getting stuffed for a 3 yard loss on 4th and 1 wouldn't have meant that much of Pittsburgh matched that kind of Defense.  They didn't.  That simple... The better offense will be showing up for tee-times next Sunday.

Always said, I'd rather be lucky than good. You could probably have gotten 1,000:1 odds in Vegas the Vikes weren't going to score a 61 yard TD on the last play with 10 seconds left. As NFL.com researched- it had never happened before in a playoff game.

Now why can't the Browns ever pull a play like that off? Last playoff game against the Steelers- we're the team that drops a pass that would have put the game away....

  • @boo-fagley said:

The Vikings defense held the best offense in the NFL to 0 in the first half. The Saints defense fell apart and couldnt hold on for the win. All the DB has to do was tackle Diggs and keep him in bounds. Game over. The Steelers defense couldnt stop  Richard Simmons from getting in the endzone. Steel curtain my axx. The Steelers are a basketball team.

You win the trenches. Draft OL with the number 4 pick and then pick up a DT next.

Look for the best NFL lineman this weekend to make your picks. They will move on the big dance.

Both the Steelers and Pats won their last SBs with walk on OL. Dallas has 5 1st round OL picks and couldn't do Sheet. THe best 5 HOF OL men of ll time, in their prime, would not have helped the Browns get to 1 - 15.

The QB makes the OL, he makes the D, he makes the difference, HENCE..............he makes more money than everyone else.

Keep drafting Corey Coleman. That's how. Oh yeah, and Zumba girl. Waste draft picks over and over and over...... and THEN.....act surprised when the team goes 1 - 15 and 0 - 16. But hey, at least we have Hue working on the fix.

Tom.....can you believe they called a pitchout on 4th and the length of Stans peepee? WHo calls plays like that? 9 men in the box, and a pitchout? Parallel to the LOS?

You know I was pro Steelers in this game, as much as that way, but some of this Steeler meltdown was just too funny.

What do you think about Ben? At times he held the ball too long, but then he sure delivered some spectacular passes. I thought last year that he lost his release time, I believe Brady has as well. For whatever reason, defenses don't blitz much any more. I give your buddy Williams props, he made life miserable for opposing QBs. I am on board for another year. If he gets a matching bookend for Two tackle Texas, we keep Collins and he is healthy, and maybe a smash mouth DB, and we are on to something.

Jax has to get after Brady. If they don't they will get shredded. Why do teams not look at what Atlanta did to Brady in the fist half of lst year's SB? Passive passive, passive. It makes football boring.
