The games deliver Ghoolie's lessons

Curious that 4 of the top 5 DEFENSIVE teams are in the championship games.
I hate all this 'this is more important than that' prattle. Especially in the NFL.
The game has two sides to the equation - score points and keep the other team from scoring points. Always has, Always will.

They are not my charts they are the NFL PRO REFERENCE Official charts.
I didn't say they were yours, but honestly, they don't indicate anything of substance. Any team that has a prolific offense is going to have one of the best defenses in the NFL simply because that defense will play less downs, have the opponent in horrible field position, AND because the opposing O will generally be playing catch up, will be at a disadvantage as to the play selection available.
A great offense makes life easy for the D.
Against a great O today, the Minnesota defense looked like pure schidt; average; not much better than the Browns.
OFFENSE wins championships................................Offense makes the defense.

San Diego Chargers when Fouts/Winslow were on the team still couldn't put together a championship due to their defense. They could put up 40 and lose 44-40. Combination of both is best.

It's been said often enough that it's worth repeating.
The best defense is a good offense.
-
1) Defense is meaningless. Offense wins championships. Always has, Always will. Only jackoffs, like, well, most of you, believe that defense is critical to win in the NFL. As you saw, with big offense, the defense merely goes along for the ride, and gets tired, gassed and sloppy as the game progresses.
You put your money into QBs. WR, TE, RB............YOu spend on OL last, always last.
2) Defenses today are afraid to pressure the QB. Brady is being given 6 seconds to pass. Neither N.O. or Minnesota blitzed much................... both QBs has all day to pass. It cost Minnesota the game go ahead FG, and it cost over-rated Sean Peyton, the game.
Marty Shottenheimer was in my mind, the biggest coward every to coach in the NFL. This weekend I watched a bunch of defenses that were afraid to pressure the QB/ Soft zone defense makes football a game for homosexuals. It has become boring, It has no intensity. This weekend games were not much different than touch football.
3) Attack offense , save for N.E. is so far a thing of the past, I don't believe most fans even know what the hell an aggressive offense is.
2nd and 2.................9 men in the box...............offenses hand the ball off....................as if 5 OL are going to block 9 men converging on the ball. These caulk suckers have the opposing defense over a barrel, committed to the run.............. and STILL...........the cowards won't call a play action pass and burn the schidt out of the D. BORING, Gutless, Bernie Kosar, "protect-the-lead" football is making the NFL less interesting than HBO's homosexual channel.

Yeah, Jax really looked terrified to pressure your Big Ben after they intercepted him 5 times (inclusive of a pick 6 or 2) during their first meeting. This time they pressured him into a fumble they easily scored on. They also intercepted him earlier in the game when their young LB picked off the pass on the sideline. This translates to minus 2 offensive possessions possessions for Pittsburgh via GOOD defense by Jax. The week before, Jax stymied Buffalo into just 3 points so all their offense had to do was score 10 points (even though 7 would have done the job).
Balance wins Championships. I've never seen a BAD defense win a SB. The game has 3 phases so despite what the moonshine is telling you - teams that neglect their defense won't be standing at the end. They just won't...
The final 4 QBs are Case Keenum, Nick Foles, Blake Bortles and the Tom Brady you assured us was finished last year at this time.
The QBs that just lost are Drew Brees, Matt Ryan, Ben Rapen and Marcus Mariota. I'm sure some Saints fans will be happy to tell you about the role defense played in yesterday's outcome. TN had the same experience. Meanwhile, Philly's defense kept Atlanta from scoring at the end of the game. Maybe all one had to do to understand football was watch football.

I agree. THey played great offense. Offense wins championships. Defense is not that important.
I’m not debating that, I’m refuting your take that no teams today took shots or used play action when opponents stacked the box. Jacksonville did, and to perfection.
Its a good take though, and I agree that a good offense significantly improves the defense, but I disagree that defense is meaningless

Blake Bortles and the Jaguars ran lots of well-executed play action passes. One for a TD to the fullback. They also took deep shots when Pittsburgh dared them. Props to the Jaguars today

Both defense and offense benefit from each other, but what is in bold is simply wrong. I won't go further than THIS YEAR, when Patriots had #1 offense and #32 defense for the first 6 games.

True. But does it make OL meaningless? Hell no. Yesterday Minnesota could have easily lost the game just because their OL didn't give even 2 seconds to Keenum to make a play in second half.
I hate to jump into this pile of do-do but there is a HUGE fact being overlooked by certain individual(s).
The formula for sucess in the NFL (and similarly in other sports) is the right combination of:
Offence, defense, special teams, coaching, FO decisions, injuries and luck to briefly sum it up.
Also to be noted in years and decades past the defenses had more success compared to today in this concussion driven tweaking of the rules and the referees emphasis on safety in calling all aspects of the game this benefits the offenses more than in the past.....and not just in the playoffs.
Now let's all go out and have a caffeine free, low calorie, GMO free, gluten free, not too hot or cold beverage and chill out.

-
Sure.....offense wins championships. Every team has to have an offense....and every team that wins has to play offense. And that offense must try to score more than the other team's offense scores. If you score 15 points and the other team scored 10...then the offense helped win. If you score 45 and the other team scores 42...then the offense helped win.
Boy....and some people make it sound like that is hard to figure out.

So, if the Saints had played better defense on the Vikings last drive they still would have lost?
The Vikings defense kept the Saints out of the endzone on their last drive and forced a FG. The Vikings defense held the NFLs best offense to nothing for 30 minutes. You want to ask the Steelers about defense? They allowed the 16th ranked NFL offense to score 38 points on them. http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/teamoff Ben couldnt throw enough TDs with that hole in the boat Pitt defense.
The offense won the football game. Checkmate.

Or we could look at how many times Brees got sacked (inclusive of a fumble lost in the pocket). That matters in close outcomes.
Think about how many years League MVP QBs have never won the Superbowl.
Today's rules favor passing games to promote more scoring so YEAH, you have to have a strong offense to compete. The difference between Pittsburgh and Sacksonville was 1 team stopped the other on 4th and 1, scored on Ben's fumble and picked off Ben. There's your point swing that mattered more than Ben's passing stats to the scoreboard favoring Jax. Meanwhile take a look at how many times Jax turned it over. The last time Pitt won a Superbowl, the biggest point swing came when Arizona had the ball at the Pitt 2 yard line. James Harrison got the pick 6 right before the half and it was HUGE to their margin of victory. THIS Pittsburgh team wasn't complete like that. End result? Offense couldn't win their championship for the second straight year.
-
Ya..... so two years ago when the Broncos steamrolled over everybody in the playoffs it was all about Peyton Manning's legendary super bowl performance of 13 completions for 141 yards and an INT.

The defense lost the football game. (I assume you are talking Minn/N.O.). You have a lousy breakdown on defense...you lose. You whiff on a critical tackle...you lose. You suck on defense...you lose....no matter how good the offense is. Best case in point: Steelers/Jags. Steelers have a great offense that played great. Steelers have a bad defense that sucked so bad its great offense could not win that game.
Checkmate...for the rest of your life.

The Achilles heel for the Steelers is their defense and offensive lines. Pittsburgh used to have one of the best OLs in the league. Not so any more. Ben was under constant pressure vs Jax and he has been constantly sacked and battered over these last few seasons. The Pittsburgh DL was also a force and critical for a 3 - 4 to keep the LBs free to make plays.
Well...I kind of disagree. I think the Steelers OL is still top notch...particularly because they have some very good players...and an outstanding OL coach.
I understand, if fact, the he...Mike Munchak...is being interviewed for some of the HC openings...perhaps Indy, perhaps Arizona. That would be good to have him out of the AFCN. Because, like with finger LeBeau before him....a great deal of the Steelers success has had to do with their top notch assistant coaches...and not necessarily with their HC.
-
he Steelers OL is fine. Playcalling is the problem. I say it over and over, NO FIVE MEN CAN BLOCK 9 IN THE BOX. When you have 4th and a foot, facing 9 in the box, and you call a pitchout, there is no OL who ever lived, that will make that play a success. An OL is only as good as the play calling.
