That is why I Xed them both out of my list to come here to serve the particular purpose that we need.

Of course a lot of people out here think it's a good idea to pick up somebody that I wouldn't consider better than a bridge and making him the starter and not picking a quarterback in the top 4.

Well....honestly....the ONLY guys that I see on the FA list that would fit that bill would be Cousins...or Garrapolo.  And as I said, he is staying in SFO I suspect.  And I am not that big of a Cousins guy.

Me neither especially if we're stuck with him for 4 years and we don't get a top qb draft pick.

  • There is a big list of potential  Free Agent QBs. that will come available in March.

Here is my position on some of them:

Cousins...will not sign with Browns...he will want a winner....and in my opinion he is not right for this team.

Drew Brees....do not see him leaving New Orleans...do any of you?

    J. Garrapolo.....likely to be signed long term with the Niners.

Case Keenum....likely to be kept by the Vikings.....along with Teddy Twatwater.

So....I am taking all of the above off the board for the Browns

So.....who does that potentially leave for the Browns to sign as our "Bridge QB"?    A veteran that can fill in for a year while a top prospect can learn the ropes.  Well...here are some potential names.....a few of which could surprise.....if they came to the Browns in that role

Sam Bradford.....at age 30 he is like the same age as Cousins....but his injuries have...to my opinion relegated him to a bridge type guy or backup.  A prime candidate.

AJ McCarron....he is only 27...and I know Jackson wants him.....but at that young age, would he be happy playing babysitter?  I say no.  Particularly if he does not become an unrestricted FA.  Not my choice.

Geno Smith.....again, only 27.....and really, to my mind....not good enough...So, no.

Ryan Fitzpatrick....age 35.   Has been a starter and backup most of his career.   Actually...fits the bill fairly well.  He is old enough, smart enough...and egoless...he could make a good mentor maybe. Another prime candidate.

Matt Moore....age 34.....a career backup...spot starter.   Similar to Fitzpatrick...but I think Fitz would be a better choice with more starting experience. Possible

Jay Cutler....age 35....but he retired once...and with his  ego and moodiness....not what you want to guide a young QB along. So...No

Chad Henne...age 34....basically a clone of Moore.   so...eh,,, not likely

Kellen Clemens....age 35....Bernie Kosar got fired for telling the truth about how bad this guy is.....so while he might be the right vintage....I say nyet.

Mark Sanchez.....age 31.   His days as a starting QB are done in my opinion. It could work.

Ryan Mallet.....age 30.   Nothing more than a backup....between him and Sanchez, I would actually rather have Mr. Butt Fumble.

Chase Daniel...age 31.  He only has 2 career starts in 8 years.  We want someone capable of starting...so, no.

And how about this Trio of Amigos.....we KNOW they all have starting experience...why?  Because they have all been full time starters for the Browns in the past:

Josh McCown...age 39.   He epitomizes what we likely need.  And as far as I know...he is still in the good graces of Browns fans, no?  And he would relish the role.

Derek Anderson...age 35.  If this SOB had played the rest of his career the way he did in 2007.....we would have not had the shitestorm we have had at QB the last 10 years.....he would have been our long term starter.    But after that one year....he became a DeShone Kizer prequel.  Still....how would he be as a Bridge QB?

Brandon Weeden....age 34.   Right age!   Experience as starter and backup.   Yet, I know the response:   God Forbid!!

So...to bottom line this.....the Browns best bet is to take on  either Bradford, or Fitzpatrick....or Josh McCown.

Secondary choices:  McCarron, Moore, Sanchez, and Anderson.

So much of what you say is subject to question:

    A. I do NOT think he has ranked in the top 5 in stats.   (Of course...you have to decide which stats are the most important).

    B. I am NOT of the belief that you cannot get a better QB in the draft.  Maybe not for the 2018 season...but long term?  There are a number of potentially better QB candidates.

  • Cousins stat rankings in 2017

    Completions:  #8

    Attempts:  #8

    Total Yards:  #7

    TDs:  #8

    Passer rating:  not top 10

    Yards per game:  #9

    Yards per attempt:  #9

    Yards per completion:  #10

    Attempts per game: #10

    Completion percentage: #9

    TD percentage: #8

    Game winning drives:  #2

    Comebacks:  not top 10

    Some negatives:

    Most interceptions thrown:  #7

    Most times sacked:  #5

Most yards lost on sacks:  #1

So...I guess, statistically, overall you might say that he was a Top Ten QB in 2017.  (but not top 5 in anything but one positive stat.)

So...is he a huge improvement over what we have now.    Obviously.

Would he come here if he were buried in a pile of cash? Possibly....but then....those other teams that might pursue him....and which have a better chance of winning NOW with him...will also bury his a-s-s is cash as well.

    https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2017/leaders.htm

  • Actually, Cousins had a better statistical season in 2016 as opposed to 2017.  He WAS in the Top 5 in a number of statistical categories in 2016:

    https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2016/leaders.htm

And in 2015...he was actually a bit worse statistically then than he was in 2017.   He only occasionally appeared in the Top Ten of stats.  (major exception...he did lead the league in pass completion Pct.....about his only Top 5 appearance:

    https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2015/leaders.htm

  • Sam Bradford.....at age 30 he is like the same age as Cousins....but his injuries have...to my opinion relegated him to a bridge type guy or backup.  A prime candidate.

Complete waste of signing and zero chance he plays more than 8 games tops,

AJ McCarron....he is only 27...and I know Jackson wants him.....but at that young age, would he be happy playing babysitter?  I say no.  Particularly if he does not become an unrestricted FA.  Not my choice.

I wouldn't jump off a bridge if this is who we end up with ALONG WITH A HIGH DRAFT PICK QB

Geno Smith.....again, only 27.....and really, to my mind....not good enough...So, no.

I threw up in my mouth a little on this one

Ryan Fitzpatrick....age 35.   Has been a starter and backup most of his career.   Actually...fits the bill fairly well.  He is old enough, smart enough...and egoless...he could make a good mentor maybe. Another prime candidate.

This would make me about as excited for opening day as it would for going to a wedding of a distant relative of my wife on a summer weekend

Matt Moore....age 34.....a career backup...spot starter.   Similar to Fitzpatrick...but I think Fitz would be a better choice with more starting experience. Possible

Moore is Less , No thanks

Jay Cutler....age 35....but he retired once...and with his  ego and moodiness....not what you want to guide a young QB along. So...No

Cutler is cut bait and should have stayed retired

Chad Henne...age 34....basically a clone of Moore.   so...eh,,, not likely

Gonna have to say meh, Henne would have most of you drunk on HenneSY by game 3

Kellen Clemens....age 35....Bernie Kosar got fired for telling the truth about how bad this guy is.....so while he might be the right vintage....I say nyet.

Clemens should have never been drafted and it pisses me off someone can suck so much at their job and still get paid

Mark Sanchez.....age 31.   His days as a starting QB are done in my opinion. It could work.

    Butt fumble , nuff said

Ryan Mallet.....age 30.   Nothing more than a backup....between him and Sanchez, I would actually rather have Mr. Butt Fumble.

Lets see stupid, innacurate, thug, pooper, gonna go with HARD PASS

Chase Daniel...age 31.  He only has 2 career starts in 8 years.  We want someone capable of starting...so, no.

Would likely CHASE away the rest of our fan base , NO

And how about this Trio of Amigos.....we KNOW they all have starting experience...why?  Because they have all been full time starters for the Browns in the past:

Josh McCown...age 39.   He epitomizes what we likely need.  And as far as I know...he is still in the good graces of Browns fans, no?  And he would relish the role.

I will take some Sheet for this but I wouldn't bitch if this happens over most of this list

    See Josh McCown,

Brandon Weeden....age 34.   Right age!   Experience as starter and backup.   Yet, I know the response:   God Forbid!!

Ok this one is just silliness!!

Deshon Kizer you forgot!!  Honestly I think if I stood in the end zone and let him lob grenades at me I wouldn't even need a bandaid after!! LOL he sucks balls in the red zone especially.

McCarron, McCown and Anderson wouldn't put me into clinical depression. McCarron could surprise and the other two would at least get me to warm day games lol. Frankly I don't care how many people disagree but to me the ONLY path forward is to pay Cousins over market. There is no other SURE fire fit to move this team forward as rapidly as necessary top salvage the fan base. Not one single QB in this draft is a lock to be a stud. This team absolutely must pull an elephant out of their butt and hit on the QB that will bring immediate victories.

I will say this repeatedly but if you take Cousins and surround him with the talent we can secure with cap and picks you have a playoff team IMMEDIATELY. I cannot fathom how anyone cannot see that. Cousins, Gordon, J. Landry, Njoku, S. Barkley and Duke is F'ing magic waiting to happen.

Having looked closer at him.....It would not bother me to have him on this team....

But...with what he wants....even though the Browns have a lot of money to spend....I think it possible that you could get yourself into a Joe Flacco situation....where you have so much money wrapped up in your QB...that you cannot afford to field a decent team around him.

Also...again...given "Cousins situation....where HE controls where he goes....I am still certain that he will want to go to a team far more "ready" to contend than the Browns seem to be.

  • Matt Moore....age 34.....a career backup...spot starter.   Similar to Fitzpatrick...but I think Fitz would be a better choice with more starting experience. Possible

Moore is Less , No thanks

  • Why would McCown 'NOT' be in the good graces of Browns fans?   If our previous FO's had any capability with foresight he should have been our QB this year.

Well the FO were tasked with a complete teardown and to be competitive in 2019 as Haslam said himself. But as he went back on it Sashi lost his job, for doing what he asked...

But this has been done to the death now, onwards and upwards I hope

Nick Foles, Man, we got a starting job for you😉(smell camp hold out? with 1 low ball deal left ) hell Colt McCoy has been in league 4 more years than McCarron..Colts (he's now 31) got a year left with deadskins, Colt's not afraid of Cleveland..

think he shows at camp for 4M with 3M roster bonus? That's McCown money..

  • Talk on the radio this morning about some QBs that may be trade bait:

Andy Dalton.....If McCarron isn't granted Free Agency....it may be open competition for starter in Cinci....to the point that the Kitties may want to trade Dalton.

Brian Hoyer....while expected to continue to back up Brady....he is not in any long term plans...and could be traded.

Landry Jones.....the Pitts may consider Josh Dobbs and their new backup QB behind BR, making Jones expendable.

    Foles.  Discussed above....not likely.

Ryan Tannehill.   It is possible that the Dolphins may be past him.   They may me in the market for Cousins.

And, oh, hey....a couple of names still out there perhaps:

    1.  Tyrod Taylor.    Bills do not see a future with him.  Not sure of his status...is a FA or not.  If yes....signing him could be considered. If not....could be tradeable.

    2.  Colin Kaepernik.   If we are listing FA QBs....he is on the list  (with about as good a track record as anyone.)  Signing him would take the heat off Hue Jackson....because everyone would have something else to talk about other than his suckage.

    3.  Like the Vikings...it is possible that all 3 of the Denver QBs could be in play:  Osweiler...though they may keep him as a veteran backup. Siemian. Clearly not seen as the QBOTF for them.   Same for Paxton Lynch. (not that the Browns would or should have any interest in him.  We have our own version of him)

  • Taylor is under contract thru 2018 with $8,5mm in dead money... so the Bills will be motivated sellers if they are moving on.

Hoyer is under contract thru 2019 at a bargain price. Odds are they draft a kid Day 2. I doubt the Pats move Hoyer until their kid proves himself and that's not likely to be this year.

Wasn't sure about Taylor.  I know that Hoyer was signed...which is why I said they could be trade bait.

On the other hand....Buffalo appears clearly done with Taylor.  Though unlikely...I suppose they could just cut him.    Teams have cut QBs to whom they owed a lot more than the figure you mention.   (can you say Browns/B.O.)

Though...I suspect they could get some....even if meager, trade value out of Taylor.

  • Thus the term "motivated sellers."
