STATE COLLEGE — Saquon Barkley is nervous about next month’s NFL Draft in Dallas — about how he’ll react when his name is called, whether he’ll cry when he hugs his mother and, sure, which team selects him.

There’s something else, too: whether he might be called home for the birth of his first child.

Last weekend, Barkley and his girlfriend, Anna Congdon, announced on social media that they are expecting a baby. At Penn State’s Pro Day in State College on Tuesday, Barkley said their baby is due April 14.

The NFL Draft is scheduled for April 26-28. So, what if …?

Barkley paused and smiled before answering.

“What happens if the baby’s delivered the same day as draft day? That’s a great question,” Barkley said. “That’s something that we’re actually worried about. But I can tell you that, if that is the case, I’m taking the first plane back to Scranton [where Congdon lives].”

The announcement added another layer to an already fascinating story regarding the 21-year-old running back from Whitehall High. Barkley’s public stock skyrocketed after the recent NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, where he became one of the most-discussed players in the upcoming draft.

NFL scouts and analysts debate daily whether Barkley could be the overall No. 1 pick, whether Cleveland or the New York Giants or an under-the-radar team might select Barkley in the first round. Barkley could become the first running back selected No. 1 overall since Ki-Jana Carter, another former Penn State back, in 1995.

Meanwhile, Barkley played last season, and spent the winter training, knowing that fatherhood awaited this spring. He had not spoken publicly before Tuesday about becoming a father, placing the focus squarely on football, but called the process a “blessing.”

“Now you’re not just training for yourself and training trying to be great,” Barkley said. “This is how you provide for your family. You also have to look at football as a business. Obviously you want to play the sport and have fun with it, but now it’s bigger than you. You have a family to provide for. As I said, I’m super excited. Everything I’m doing is obviously for myself and for my kid.”

Barkley further talked about his father Alibay, who has been open about the “bad choices” he made in New York when he was younger. Alibay Barkley had an admitted drug problem and served time in Rikers Island because of a gun charge that violated his probation at the time.

That prompted Tonya Johnson, Barkley’s mother, to moved the family from the Bronx to the Lehigh Valley. Last week, Barkley’s parents watched in Harrisburg as dozens of House representatives and staffers paraded through the Capitol to get a moment with the running back on “Saquon Barkley Day” in Pennsylvania.

“The thing I’m looking forward to most about being a dad is trying to be a great role model,” Barkley said. “I know I’m going to make mistakes in my life and I know that my father made mistakes in his life. I’m looking forward to being open and honest about the mistakes that he made and the decisions he made.

“… You have to respect him as a man. A lot of people can’t look their kids in the face and tell them the decisions that they made were awful and the mistakes they made were bad. That helped me. You guys every single day talk about how good I am, how good my character is. That’s not because of me. That’s because of my family. It’s my mom and my dad.”

Barkley did not participate in drills at Penn State’s Pro Day. He planned to, but because no NFL running backs coaches attended, opted out of running pass routes for the remaining personnel representing the league’s 32 teams.

Barkley spoke informally with scouts from several teams and has visits planned for early next month. He’s also declared himself finished with combine training but will entertain private workouts from teams that request them.

On Monday, Penn State coach James Franklin said that, raves aside, he thought Barkley had a “very average” performance at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Barkley agreed, saying he expected to run a faster 40-yard dash, clear a higher vertical jump and perform more reps on the bench press.

Those days are behind him, though. “I’m not a combine guy,” Barkley said. “I want you to throw on the film and I want to show that I’m a football player.”

On Saturday, Barkley will be in Coplay for a parade organized by the Borough Council and Whitehall High. Then he’s off to his future.

“April’s going to be a big month for me,” Barkley said. “I tweeted out the other day that big blessings were coming my way. A lot of people thought I was just talking about the draft but I was not only talking about the draft but also my future kid. I’m truly excited.”

One of the most dominant combine performances in recent memory was merely an average day for Barkley. If that is what you can expect on a day to day basis, what are you going to get from him when the game is on the line?

Ahh, what happened to that perfect character? Child out of wedlock tsk ran.

While never done, in some states (maybe all) it is actually illegal to have relations outside of wedlock.

  • And I see recently you have now compared Saquon to Jim Brown.

    Well let's compare:

    Career Rushing

    Jim Brown- 12,312 5.2 avg 106 TDS

    Saquon Barkley- 000000000000

Until proven otherwise please shut up about comparing your cousin to NFL greats.

Until he has proven something, he is Curtis Ennis or Ki Jana Carter.

I think you made a mistake, it's not PoeticG, it's PatheticG

  • Who is this Saqwan feller of which you speak?

    And why does he bark?

It sure reads in my mind when saying he could have done better, and has before, that pressure and bright lights might have gotten to him. Not a good sign ?

Yea, let's not answer ANY negative about Charles Barkley, let's try to change subject to make him look good.

Obviously you don't know much about football, but scoring 2 TD's doesn't matter (maybe it does in fantasy, which I presume is all you know) when the other team scores more. You see, the object is to win the game, not have amazing stats. But of course you don't like stats when they don't favor you. One great thing about a dominant running back is the ability to keep the chains and clock moving at the end of game to keep other team off the field. How did that work against Buckeyes?

But go ahead and show another highlight film of Charles. We anticipate it PatheticG

  • Can you imagine if we ever picked a RB at #1 overall?  With all of the QB position problems we've had since our return?  The store with the names on the jersey...that was getting all the publicity from it...they took the shirt down because it's just too painful to Browns fans.  And some think we should just take the one that falls to us.

That run which added to his whopping 44yds total? But,  he did boost his ypc to 2.1 with that one.

Take away that td run,  he rushed for a whopping 8 yds.  When the game was on the line,  he no showed.

    I SEENT IT!  🙂

  • Take a look at the screenshot above- The defender #26 (in red) is you "trying" to make a case against Barkley. You're funny, now go clean yourself up son, it's embarrassing.

I've seen Barkley juke Bosa to his knees, dust your boy Hubbard like a toddler, run past Vita Vea like he was a statue and straight dog a lot of these supposed first round talents. Barkley is a Beast - just admit it and quit crying because we're drafting him #1.

None of these QB's are worthy of being drafted before our boy Saquon,- I don't care if it's a QB, he's going to be backing up the backup next season.

Plenty of Front Offices have missed on #1 QBs in the past, you think that just because we pick "him" #1, this "random #1 QB" - one who shall not be named because nobody knows who is best) that he's going to be our QB for the next 20 to 30 years? Get real bro, Joe Thomas- the best LT to play the game barely made it 11 seasons. Don't try and pretend to know how long this guy or that guy is going to play. Each player is different and that is something you can't plan for. What if your coveted #1 QB busts? Yeah, you've all failed to address that but love to whine and whatnot about the best player in the draft... funny.

So then take one of the multiple people up on their bets big boy.

I saw different bets with different amounts of money that "your boy" WON'T get drafted #1.

And I through out a bet for NO MONEY, just a name change thst he WON'T be best player ever like you have said.

I mean you were already wrong about how strong and fast he was, but we will forget that one.

So either put on your big boy pants or stay quiet. Everyone has heard you on Barkley every one of the 12,312 posts you talked about him. And you have proved NOTHING with them, just like Barkley

LOL the only one embarrassing themselves is you. Did you run out of kleenex and lotion yet?

  • No friend, I wasn't wrong.

    Straight from the horse's mouth-

Legit 4.3 guy, laser timed 4.29

Has jumped a 42 inch vertical

Usually puts up 30 - 35 reps, wanted at least 30 reps.

So, by all means, continue to nitpick and reach for negatives but I think that it's pretty clear. "Most" everyone I've talked to personally are 100% on board with Barkley #1 and the best QB available at #4, so- you can't tell me nothing.

    Barkley #1 or bust.

Each player is different and that is something you can't plan for. What if your coveted #1 QB busts? Yeah, you've all failed to address that but love to whine and whatnot about the best player in the draft... funny.

LOL the only one embarrassing themselves is you. Did you run out of kleenex and lotion yet?

I see you failed once again to address my issues with anything of substance... resulting back to infantile insults shows your maturity.

I'm 100% clear and concise in my evaluation or rather, my opinion. Where as I haven't seen you do anything but ride the coat-tails... maybe I'll start calling you "Tomlin Tom"
