History says that no  Big 12 QB will be much good as an NFL QB.   Since that league was formed from the Big 8/Southwest Conf. schools in like 1994, the best QB to come out of there has been Andy Dalton.

But....I think that trend has to change, and these two are the best candidates to make that change.  I just hope the right one is on our side.

Ok, 1994 elimiates Troy Aikman who started there before he transferred. Also, I'll posit Sam Bradford is a better qb than Dalton the rare times he's healthy.

Aikman graduated in 1989 from UCLA.....and, as I said above, it has just been since the Big 12 was formed in like 1994 that I was counting QBs.  Prior to that I suspect that the Big 8/Southwest Conference had some pretty good QB.

Though, in checking, between 1960 and its demise, the Big 8 had only a few decent QBs:   The best was probably John Hadl,  then there was Lynn Dickey and Steve Grogan, both from Kansas St.  Vince Ferragamo from Nebraska.  Kordell Stewart came from  Colorado.

The Southwestern Conference was not that much better. Starting in 1950 you had Joe Ferguson from Arkansas,  Don Meredith from SMU, and Frank Ryan and Tommy Kramer from Rice.   Not a plethora of great QBs.

Before 1950/60 though I know that each conf. had some good QBs.  Sammy Baugh...TCU, Bobby Layne...Texas

The Big Ten by comparison since 1950 has had a few Hall of Famers:   Bob Griese and Len Dawson from Purdue.  But actually, except for those Purdue guys, no other HOF QBs  since 1950 have been inducte  Except, of course, they will have Drew Brees..Purdue and Tom Brady..Michigan upcoming.  And prior to 1950 they had Benny Friedman...Michigan, and Otto Graham...Northwestern.  It is also possible that in the forseeable future that Russell Wilson...Wisconsin....could be considered an HOF lock, if he continues on as is.

(and Larry....right now Dalton's stats plus his 4 playoff appearances put him objectively better than Bradford....but who knows, as you say about the injury situation.  But if you just wanted a guy to play now...given health all around, I would probably prefer Bradford as well)

Thinking about the above Gip- it goes to show how uncommon it is to have great QBs come out of any conference. Looking at the top 10 from last year, the Big 10 is the leader in the clubhouse.  🙂 So I will posit the conference doesn't necessarily predict future success in the NFL for a quarterback. All about the player.

    Brady- Michigan

    Rivers- NC State

    Stafford- Georgia

    Brees- Purdue

    Roethlisberger- Miami Ohio

    Ryan- Boston College

    Cousins- MSU

    Alex Smith- Utah

    Wilson- NC State- Wisconsin

    Goff- Cal

  • Sure, Hoorta.     But just curious, those QBs were top ten in what?

And let me ask this question, if anyone knows:

How is it that BR, who grew up right in the middle of between like Michigan, Ohio State, MSU, Indiana and Purdue, was passed over and ended up going to Miami Oh.  Nothing against them.....a program of great historical note.....but not a major program.

Passing yardage. Don't remember why Ben wound up at MU.

He only started at QB for his senior year of HS. He was a WR before that, head coach's son was the QB.

What can I say, I like my QBs "rapey"...

  • Might want to check Mayfield's actual analysis before knocking him.  He is, in the world of objective reality, a "strong-armed AFC North QB."

Oh, and he's just as athletic as someone named Johnny Manziel but he maintains his ability to throw during the scramble while Manziel did... not.

  • Mahomes

  • Mahomes will be a Bust.

The Chiefs always choose the wrong QB. This time they moved up in the wrong draft. Mahomes supposedly has the big arm that Alex Smith never had. The game is about quick decisions and short passes because they lead to higher completion percentage.

So by this logic, Mayfield will be a bust too, since the Browns 1999 on have been a QB graveyard, right?

but a lot of those QB picks were flat-out BAD picks. Didn't want Quinn- and certainly not Manziel. We-done was a desperation pick doomed from the get-go. Almost threw up when they announced Kizer. Thinking Frye or McCoy were going to be the next Joe Montana? Lotsa luck there.

........but all your really need to understand is that Andy Reid drafted him, had him on the roster a whole year, and then decided to trade the NFL's passer rating leader, who still had a year left at a somewhat reasonable 20 million, so he could make room to start Mahomes.  .....you can read glowing reports from writers, other players, coaches, etc...but the thing that should really make you take notice is they moved on from a good QB under contract to start this kid.  He's going to be freaking awesome.

Yes, no team has ever moved on from a productive veteran in favor of the draw of greener pastures of a "promising" rookie.

Mahomes first start didn't inspire a ton of confidence.

I think it is a bit early to determine if he is going to be freaking awesome.  A lot of people thought DeShone Kizer would be freeking awesome.  Let's wait a few years.  And even if he looks awesome to begin with.....I have three words of caution:   R, G. and III. (also apply this to DeShaun Watson).

Every Tom, Ghoolie and Harry looks like a star in practice. When it gets real they $hit the bed. Mahomes will be no different.

Reid drafting anybody means little. The great Eagles teams were built by GM Howie Roseman and not Andy Reid. Andy got his a$$ run out of town after the Eagles grew tired of his excuses. " I need to do a better job" - Andy Reid. The Eagles won the Lombardi because Andy was not around to screw it up.

No, because the Browns hit a QB rich draft and were sitting in the cat bird seat.

The other years they still had to choose a QB too. Its like drinking Jameson or Zaya rum. You want Jameson because its the best, but if it aint around youll settle for Zaya and hold your nose.

I'll start for Ag.   It's the difference between drinking Diplomatio Reserva and Kessler Burbon, Burbon Superme, or Kamchatka vodka- you know the sort of stuff you can buy a 1.75 liter for $12 bucks.  🙂   We drank plenty of Kessler trying to believe we were getting Remy Louis XIII.  (for those of you who aren't into cognac,  Remy is 100 year old that costs around $2,400 a bottle. I saw it at one bar where I could have had a 1\2 ounce pour for $70, and considering, that's not getting ripped off. )
