They are so careful with the radar and strike detection equipment -but- a strike in a stadium would be a bad day......ouch.

For some reason I thought some soccer player got killed by lightning... ?

I remember Lee Trevino getting knocked to the ground by a bolt... back in the 70's??? First "game" I can remember being suspended was one of the last College All-star games in Chicago. I remember "freeze frames" of multiple strikes in the stadium area before play was suspended. As I remember the game was finally called off due to the dangerous weather.

But seriously one of the reasons there hasn't been a recent incident is that precautions are now taken.

I've been within 50-yds of a lightening strike. I was standing in a open Maintenance building bay door having a smoke and watching the rain when a bolt hit the structure of the operating unit I was supervising at the time.

All I can say is I should have been wearing brown pants. It was one of the loudest noises I have heard in my 60+ years.

  • Flooding does kill more people than lightning. If the city is in some kind of flood emergency situation...flooded underpasses, ramps, roads..etc, the stadium may be just fine but the game could still be cancelled. 7 inches in 24 hours might do it. Depends on the exact track but folks around here are taking it seriously. Sandbags are in the low areas already.

why would they not have considered moving the game up to Saturday? (concert?other stadium events?)

Because now it's looking like the rain track will be further south. Pissburgh is in line for the douching

  • They're talking 3-5 inches in Cleveland, further south from Canton to South of Columbus they could get 5-8 inches.  Better get your basements ready.

That plus the logistics of getting a game a day earlier compared to postponing for convenience.

If they had a retractable stadium it would be no big deal......Indians also who are in Toronto rain or shine.

Too bad both didn't do it right before.

When I left Dayton for the game this evening, my rain gauge already said 3.5", with more heavy rain predicted overnight.

    Don't forget your towel!

It's rained on our home opener one way or the other for a long time. May as well let mother nature in on it too.

Well they could use it for other events like tennis......just crank the other one out of the way, eh?

Seriously though when others like Miller Park and other northern facilities got smart -and- before the costs went wacko it was a good idea, and the only real shot at a super bowl or other major conventions and really big weddings.  😍

  • The rain has been no big deal up north here.  It won't have much of an effect except maybe for the field being wet.
