Haslam is the Problem
-
Larry, I absolutely agree with you. If Haslam were the problem moving forward, Hue would still be our HC. What I pulled from it is that JH will be in the loop, but Dorsey & staff will make the decisions.
Jimmy has made mistakes, but he also has attempted different ways of doing things to correct those things. I'm fine with Jimmy. I'll also say this..If I confided something in Jimmy, I feel I could walk away feeling I could trust in him honoring my confidence. I wouldn't trust Hue as far as I could throw hm.
Mike
Dude is a massive crook. I wouldn’t trust him with my Netflix password.
After he made the team draft Manziel he should have been forced to sell the team.
Everytime he talks he sounds like a politician. He didn’t answer a single question they asked him today.
Maybe if we are lucky he will get thrown in jail when they are hiring the next coach.

Well obviously what we're doing is not the way to be competitive. Just because something worked for someone else doesn't mean it'll work for us, or it won't.
We really don't know Jimmy and Dorsey's plan. I'm not sure if Dorsey is a yes man, or if Jimmy is still doing moneyball with Depo there.
Maybe it's good to trade one vet like Jamie Collins. But can you really argue that we should trade all vets? Like Hyde, Gordon, and the rumors that even Devalve is on the trade block with Collins too. How will all of these youngsters feel if all the vets are traded? How will the coordinators be confident we can win any games with practice squad players playing?
Or are we just tanking? That has to be the case, or Hue wouldn't of said he doesn't feel pressured ever to win right now by Jimmy.
If this 5 year moneyball plan was to tank for two years, and then win 3-7 games and trade all of the vets for fifth rounders, then it's surely working the right way.
Baker is good, but the guys blocking him will get him murdered. Who did we replace Joe Thomas with again?
If you watched the press conference, Dorsey said the moves they're making are to make the team better. So with 20\20 hindsight unloading Hyde was a move to get Chubb more work. John forced Hue and Haley's hand- take your pick which one. They (meaning the FO) isn't throwing in the towel this year. They want to win and to their mind(s) unloading Hue and Haley was addition by subtraction.
i said it before.....josh gordon situation really screwed us because it looks like he is returning to what he used to be yrs ago....he would have made all our other wr's look better because, lets face it...landry is not a future hof'er ......he is not even a number 1 wideout in this league...but i think he would have been a little more productive with gordon drawing alot of attention from the db's....oh well....that's the way it goes in good ole clown town...
Josh Gordon listed as "questionable" for tonight's game. As Teddy Bruschi said "the best ability is availability". Gordon was "unavailable" to the Browns for over 1\2 his stay in Cleveland.
Haslam is drinking a Blue Moon or Shock Top at the press conference
I would too, if you're a manager it's a tough job to tell someone you're fired.

I'd say Jimmy is responsible mainly because of the completely messed up reporting system he has which creates instability. Everyone has to report to him, separately. Most of the times a coach would report to a GM and they would work together, but if something goes wrong, Jimmy has everyone seperately reporting to him complaining about someone else.
Dorsey is what has saved things. A reporter said Jimmy stated he would of kept Hue if it wasn't for Dorsey. He wasn't ready to fire him yet. Bringing in Williams was a Dorsey move, and this, in turn was a Dorsey move too that might save the team. Probably planned ages ago in case Hue started off cold. Ghoolie was wrong, and Dorsey isn't a coffee fetcher for Hue.
That being said, I'm glad we made a change, because it's apparent Hue just wasn't working. He was telling Haley to call his plays, and Haley was ignoring that and calling his own plays. The whole thing seems like something a teenager would do, but he was a desperate man just trying to keep his job.
Josh Gordon liked the instagram post about Hue getting fired. Hue could of been a major part of the reason Josh slacked off this year. Maybe he didn't believe in him and thought he was a horrible coach, and just wanted out because of that.
Jimmy said he was responsible, but this move today made me feel that he was trying to right a wrong with the whole Hue thing. I'm happy he stepped up and listened to Dorsey, Because without Dorsey, we could of very well had Hue till 2020 (I'm not kidding). Whatever he was selling Jimmy, Jimmy believed. This move was human, and it made me change my mind about him tanking for another draft pick and moneyballing for ten years.
Because admit it, if we kept Hue till 2020, and he didn't win more than 5 games a year, it would mean we're playing moneyball to save money, point blank.

I agree with 90% of what you posted. Grossi said (and I agree with him) having both the GM and HC report to him is messed up, and maybe after this season Haslam is willing to change that reporting structure.
BTW, if you listened to the presser, axing Hue and Haley was a preemptive move to STOP the team from tanking. I've said it elsewhere in several threads- the last half of the Steelers game, it was obvious the team had quit. I haven't forgotten when we hired Hue to be the HC, he was a hot commodity. Man did he ever fall flat on his face in that regard. I will bet the ranch right now, Jackson will never get another HC gig in the NFL.
However, Jimmy is certainly not into saving money. Sinking $90 million of his own money into the stadium, and reports he's interested in buying into the Columbus Crew to prevent them from moving should be all the proof you need. He will spend- when the time is right. His time with the Steelers impressed upon him the maxim- you can't just buy your way to a championship, (Miami with Suh exhibit A) and if you do- it's usually short lived.

Disagree. Jimmy is passionate about fielding a winner here & that passion has led to mistakes, but he has also changed paths when he has gone the wrong way. His hiring of a REAL, SUCCESSFUL football guy in John Dorsey, then deferring to Dorsey with yesterday's changes should show that he is willing to put aside his own ego, listen to reason, respect anothers' expertise & change.
I believe the reporting status of HC/OC/DC will change to Dorsey at some point in 2018 or early 2019. Jimmy will still want input, but Dorsey has obviously won Jimmy's respect. Now John is talkin' & Jimmy is listening.
Now let's sit back, see how 2018 goes & move forward.

There is a book by a guy named Dan Moldea that outlines the connections between the NFL and the mafia

After listening to that abortion of a press conference, any reasonable person would have to conclude that Haslam is the problem. At this juncture, I wish he'd have gone down in the Pilot Flying J scandal and had the franchise yanked from him. I wouldn't let that silver spooned fool flip burgers at a McDonalds.
Sorry if I don't agree, and I watched the whole thing. Pretty obvious Dorsey is going to be the decision maker from here on out- assuming we see improvement from the team. Not going to be easy with the Chiefs coming in on Sunday after the big shakeup today.

I don't think Dorsey's status is record dependent at all... not this season.

Hiring Dorsey was the best thing he ever did, perhaps the only good thing he has done. I was speaking of his overall track record but I did really like the Dorsey hire I will say. In time I hope in time Jimmy fades back and gives Dorsey more autonomy and is willing to bankrolls competitive payrolls.

Good for him.

Maybe the staff could talk him into scouting kickers in New Zealand for awhile. I’m real glad that the media is calling the hill rod out on this. Just maybe this time it sinks in

Single most important point Lemerises makes...
Haslam repeatedly has hired a coach and a GM and made both of them report to the owner separately. In your "How to Create a Power Struggle" manual, that's Step One. Heck, it's practically the only step.
I'm counting on this being corrected this time...

That absolutely blows my mind.
Hell, even the mob knows that you don't skip levels. The boss of a family isn't talking to a street level soldier.
With Jimmy's business tactics, you'd think he'd know this too.
-
Haslem's record as an owner is downright tragic.
So his first day as Owner he brings in Joe Banner as CEO, as it is announced that Homgren will leave the team after the season.
Banner was suggested by the NFL
He inherits GM Heckert and coach Shurmur, in the middle of the Shurmur's second season which ends 5-11, after 4-12 the previous year, so Heckert and Shurmur are both relieved of their duties after the season.
Haslem and Banner excitedly announce their big hire as football coach: Rob Chudzinsky. They chose him over the likes of Mike Zimmer and Bill O'Brien.
"When Haslam and Banner embarked on their coaching search as 2013 began, the pair vowed they would wait as long as necessary to find "the right coach" for Cleveland. They promised to give their new coach final say over the roster and planned to pair him with an executive to help pick players ..."I believe we came back with the best coach for the Cleveland Browns," said Haslam, who flew Thursday night with Banner to Charlotte, N.C., to offer Chudzinski the job. "He is one of the brightest young coaches in the business."
THEN they hire a GM ... Lombardi.
So, then Chud goes 4-12, just like the previous coach did, and they fire him at the end of one season, despite him being saddled with Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell as his QBs and 94 year old Willis McGahee as his feature back.
Haslem and Banner say they "erred" in choosing Chudzinski and admitted that all their moves during the season (Trading Richardson, etc.) were geared for a big 2014 offseason ... And they were going to get it right!
Ahhh, the 2014 Offseason, Jimmah's finest moment ... On the advice of Banner and Lombardi he hires Bills DC Mike Pettine (one of the few defenses we were able to beat the previous season) to be the HC. Then, GET THIS, three weeks later, he fires both Banner and Lombardi and promotes young Ray Farmer to GM (He said he feared he would lose this great talent to another team if he didn't promote him. Now Pettine and Farmer are married together and are both to answer to Jimmy, along with Operations guy Alec Scheiner, with no CEO or Prez or football guy to answer to in between ... What could go wrong? Jimmy's trust in the great talent of Ray Farmer pays off in that 2014 draft they were building up to when he delivers, not only "shutdown corner" Justin Gilbert but "franchise QB" Johnny Manziel as well in the first round (Neither of them are allowed to play football in America anymore).
With the team 7-6 in Pettine's first season, after a 7-4 start and still and vying for a playoff spot, orders come from above to bench overachieving journeyman Brian Hoyer with unprepared party boy John Manziel and, welcome yet another losing season!
The 2015 offseason is another textbook in dysfunction: Manziel heads to rehab, star receiver Josh Gordon is suspended for substance violations, Farmer is suspended for the first four games for texting the coaches during the games the previous season, promising offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan says "I'm out of here", Farmer spends two first rounders on plodding lineman who are no longer with the team, and just before the season is to start, the offensive line coach is arrested on domestic violence charges ... But we got new uniforms!
Somehow that team won three games, and Jimmy fired both Farmer and Pettine after the season. I believe on the same day he fired Pet and Farmer, he excitedly handed over the keys to exec. VP/ General counsel Sashi Brown, making Brown, who never played or coached the game or picked players before, the fourth GM in so many years. We were going the analytics route with "Moneyball" Paul Depodesta as "Chief Strategy Officer" and a third Harvard alum, former scout Matthew Berry, as VP of personnel.
These intellectuals put their brains together and decided to hire Hue Jackson
"It's very exciting for us to name Hue Jackson as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns," Jimmy Haslam said in a release. "He embodies all the qualities that will provide strong leadership for our football team. He is highly experienced, deeply passionate about winning, and relentless in trying to find ways to put his players in the best position to succeed.
First order of Business for the "Harvard Connection": Sign washed-up QB Robert Griffin III to a two-year contract. Second order of business, let four starters walk in free agency (Welcome to Cleveland, Hue!) Third order of business: Trade out of the #2 spot (Franchise QB Carson Wentz) to the #8 spot, and trade out of the #8 spot (All Pro Tackle Jack Conklin) to nab WR Corey Coleman at #15. Coleman has spent the past two months being cut four times by three teams. The depleted 3-13 team roster somehow wins a game in December and the Browns avoid an 0-16 Season ... Now, THAT would have been embarrassing!
The next offseason, the Browns astound the football world by actually staying put with the #1 pick and drafting the consensus best prospect, Myles Garrett. But they didn't disappoint by going full "Brownsie" later in the first round by trading out of the #12 spot, and away from future franchise QB Deshaun Watson (The Browns had no QBs on the roster that had ever won a footaball game before except Brock Osweiler who they acquired in the fist NFL salary dump trade and later cut). Hue Jack is commissioned to go to war with a 2nd round rookie at QB and tons of unused cap space remaining, well ... unused, and ... LO AND BEHOLD ... We did it ... 0-16!
John Dorsey is brought in around the 0-12 mark as Sashi Brown is dumped less than two years after being handed the keys, but Haslem stipulates to Dorsey that he will be keeping 1-31 Hue around. But Hue must hire a new playcaller: Todd Haley.
Cut to 2018, Dorsey's picks are looking good and the Browns may have finally secured a franchise QB of their own as they start out 2-2-1 and are competitive in every contest. Then the wheels come off, three bad losses in a row, Hue and Haley apparently cannot get along in the same sandbox, and Jimmy fires BOTH Jackson and Haley in the middle, the very middle, of the season. Poor DC Gregg Williams is tabbed interim coach, and is married to Freddie Kitchens as his offensive coordinator without a say in the matter.
Nothing dysfunctional at all going on here, Jimmy.
I'm sure you'll get it right at the end of the season when the rest of the coaching staff is let go and a new chain of command is devised.
I mean you have to get right eventually ... right? Right??
