To be nice he just wasn't "opportunistic".    😆

No trophies will be named after him.

Great guy too. Hard not to like Marty.

Marty's problem was he never learned from his mistakes.. He was a professional circle jerk as far as coaching goes

Same with Marv Levy, great coaches, great guys -but- didn't get the big one.

Jimmy Johnson just named to the HOF.    Did he and Cowher really deserve it over  Coryell, Flores, Holmgren, Parker, Reeves, Vermeil?

Or did those two get it because they are personalities  on the Gameday shows on CBS and Fox respectively.  Seems like that, a bit.

    Cowher probably. But Johnson???

Most of the coaches you  listed including Johnson didn't even make this list. But Marty did.

Cowher won a lot. Won the division 8 out the 15 yrs he coached.

A tad better resume than HOF'er Tony Dungy. So yeah he deserves it if Dungy does.

    17. Bill Cowher

    Pittsburgh 1992-2006

    149-90-1 (15 years), 12-9 in playoffs

    8 division titles

2 Super Bowl appearances (XXX, XL)

    Super Bowl XL champion

    15. Tony Dungy

    Tampa Bay 1996-2001; Indianapolis 2002-08

    139-69 (13 years), 9-10 in playoffs

    6 division titles

    Super Bowl XLI champion

Pro Football Hall of Fame, Class of 2016

Apparently the criteria for Marty making this list has nothing to do with Super Bowls or playoff wins.

    21. Marty Schottenheimer

Cleveland 1984-88; Kansas City 1989-98; Washington 2001; San Diego 2002-06

    200-126-1 (21 years), 5-13 in playoffs

    8 division titles

Schottenheimer coached four different teams and had only two losing seasons. That tells you how good he was.

    OK...well, these lists are subjective.

Dan Reeves went to the SB  4 times with 2 different teams, and lost them all.   Would one win have made a difference?   It didn't for Marv Levy and Bud Grant.....each 4 time SB losers.......but inducted.

Flores?   With the Rooney rule discussion, maybe we should say that the HOF should have their own Rooney Rule...His background is Hispanic/Native American.    If they have Dungy in there for just one SB win, why not Flores with 2?

Marty had more wins and a better win pct. than Cowher....in the regular season.   So, obviously winning in the Postseason is a substantial requirement for induction......as Marty and Reeves are not in, even with substantially better regular season records.

I tend to agree. He lost several AFC Title games in his own stadium.

No Gipper, I was writing about Bill Cowher in a response to Nickers.

Cowher was 2-4 in AFC Title games, losing all 4 in his own stadium.

Was Cowher a great coach? The answer would be yes. He certainly was a great motivator for his players.

Is he a Hall of Fame coach? Well, now he is but I say NO.

OK, but saying no is superfluous.   But I think perhaps the analysis is:   If Cowher is someone that belongs in the HOF, then so do X,Y, Z who are not yet in.   I sort of did that above, with Flores, Reeves, Marty, others.  Chuck Knox

I see. Well little folks like the fans will never have a say-so.

Admitting I have some anger issues, jealousy issues with Pittsburgh and Denver, if you compare apples-to-apples, it's pretty obvious Reeves had a far better coaching career.

There's a definite Steelers bias with the HOF. Lots of great NFL players played in Pittsburgh, but they are over represented as a whole in Canton IMHO. I use Kevin Greene and Lynn Swan as examples.

Denver....who's in? Off the top of my head it's Elway, Floyd Little, & Terrell Davis. Where's Randy Gradishar, Rick Upchurch, Steve Atwater, Carl Mecklenburg? They've had similar success as a franchise as Pittsburgh over about the same time frame (1970-present). It's plain wrong.

  • Not listing Polamalu is only showing the bias of some of you. He's going in and if he doesn't it will be because he doesnt care about accolades and the hall has an ego to floss.

if he doesn't, it's because he is a girly-man who was a cheap shot artist even before the NFL.....

  • The rest of the list was revealed this morning.  Here are the names that got in:

    Jimbo Covert OT  80s Bears

    Winston Hill OT Jets

    Harold Carmichael  WR Eagles

Duke Slater   OT....several teams from the 20s

    Ed Sprinkle  dE/LB  40s Bears

    Steve Sabol  NFL Films

    Alex Karras DT  Lions   "Mongo"

Bobby Dillon  S   50s Packers   (not to be confused with Bobby Dylan)

    Donnie Shell DB  70s Steelers

George Young.    GM for the Colts in 60s,  Dolphins Dynasty, and Giants in 80s

    Cliff Harris  S   Cowboys

    Paul Tagliabue    Commish

    Mac Speedie  WR   40s/50s Browns.

  • There's a name you don't hear too often started in the defunct AAFC and with the new current NFL Browns.

Speedie will become the Browns' 17th Hall of Famer and first inducted since Gene Hickerson in 2007.

Or, maybe, like in my opinion, he is up against a couple of other  Safeties who have waited longer and who were likely better,  in John Lynch and Steve Atwater.

But you are right....he will go in someday....maybe even this year,  whether he deserves it or not.

Hard to make any HOF when on one side you had some contributions to the game -but- on the other you're a shady operator.

    May he just fade away.........

  • Thank God no modell

  • If you were to go by  career production,  the finalist for induction this year,  (the regular class) should be in this order, per PFR's career production average:

    1. Reggie Wayne  155

    2.  Zach Thomas  149

    3. Alan Faneca  146

    4. Isaac Bruce 137

    5. Edgerrin James 136

    6. Sam Mills  126

    7. Tori Holt  123

    8. Steve Hutchinson  119

    9. Bryant Young 117

    10. John Lynch  115

    11. Troy Polamalu  115

Of course, those just apply to the guys that are up for finalists this year.   They left off Clay Matthews, and he had a 137 CA.  As for Vag's whining about Polamalu.....there are even other Steelers that had better carees who are not on this list:  Hardy Nickerson had a 129.  Hines Ward had a better CA.   And Poly, with his paltry 115  production?   The following guys have a right to complain:   Jim Marshall  164 not in.  Ken Anderson 161 not in.

He should/could get his Steeler representative in the form of Alan Faneca....not Polly.

And don't forget, Donnie Shell got in with the Centennial Class

  • Thank God no modell

    ?

  • Modern players -- 5 is the max, I can't support anyone other than these

    Atwater

    Boselli

    Seymour

  • They did put in 3 OTs with the Centennial Class......but not Dick Shafrath who was better than all of them likely.
