Both the 17th game and the 7th playoff team per conference received owners approval today. Bunch more money heading the players way to buy their acceptance. Also some de-emphasis of the preseason games.

Not sure the 17th game is going to be accepted by the players. And I do not think it'll hold the attention of NFL fans in general. Very few playoff spots will still be in question after the 16th game. A more reasonable path to an 18th Week of regular season play would seem to me to give each team 2 Bye weeks during the season.

I guess the added playoff team means one less bye during the 1st round, a/k/a Wildcard Weekend.

As a season ticket holder Tour, I'll  go with  JJ Watt and give a hard pass  on a17th game. The owners are only  interested in  the extra  $$$ they can extort from the fans, and to hell with player  saftey.

And it's certainly possible to have  Gipper's rivalry game even  with a 16 game schedule.

    THE TEAM BEHIND THE TEAM

On average, there are 30 healthcare providers at a stadium on game day to give immediate care to players. In conjunction with the NFLPA, the league has added unaffiliated medical personnel and adopted new technology to assist in the identification and review of injuries, with a specific focus on concussions.

NFL medical professionals follow the step-by-step NFL Concussion Protocol when they are identifying, diagnosing and treating player concussions. The NFL Head, Neck and Spine Committee — a board of independent and NFL-affiliated physicians and scientists, including advisors for the NFL Players Association — developed the NFL Game Day Concussion Diagnosis and Management Protocol in 2011. The Concussion Protocol is reviewed each year in an effort to ensure players are receiving care that reflects the most up-to-date medical consensus on the identification, diagnosis, and treatment of concussions. For the 2018 season, additional improvements were made to the Concussion Protocol......... MUCH MORE ABOUT IT IN THE LINK........

  • How about going to a 15 or 14 game season for player safety ?   I'm sure that will fly.        😆

The more  games you play, the more  chances of getting  hurt. It's  not just concussions.  Of course  they can't  reduce the  number of  games.

MHO? They could  cut around  100 games out of the MLB schedule.  🙂

Any thoughts on this from the ticket holders? Seems like a reasonable compromise to me. I'm surprised it's not getting any mention.

    • Adds a week of Prime time games to TV revenue.
    • Gives players added week off during season.

Byes could all be during the middle 8 weeks of the season (starting Week 6) with one AFC and one NFC Division off each of those weeks. Divisions could be paired by those who play each other which they could then do coming out of the first Bye. The week following the 2nd Bye could be reserved for inter-divisional play.

  • so who gets the extra home game ? would it be a every other year thing ? or maybe a neutral site game ?

  • So...what the hell happened with the Union vote?   Saw no report after it was rejected by Exec. committee.

PrintNFL Players Association leaders have scheduled an important meeting Thursday morning with the board of player representatives to discuss the status of collective bargaining talks and get the board's input on how to proceed, according to sources familiar with the plan.

It's a significant step after months of formal and informal bargaining sessions between the union and the NFL, which continues to push for the option to expand the regular season to 17 games as part of the next TV deals as a condition for increasing players' share of revenue and other issues. The current collective bargaining agreement is set to expire in 2021, and both sides want to avoid a work stoppage.

The chances for striking a deal hinge in large part on how players respond to the idea of 17 games. Some players -- including 49ers receiver Emmanuel Sanders, who played 17 regular-season games this year because of a midseason trade -- have already spoken out strongly against it. So the NFL must make it worth their while, financially and otherwise, or else players opposed could band together and try to block it.......... continued in the link........

  • Where are things on the  Marijuana issue?

The disciplinary procedure issue?  the Franchise tag issue   Again, all we have heard about is the 17 game schedule and the added playoff teams.....and money.

Is it the truth that all those other issues that have been SO big in the past....are just swept aside when it comes to getting more money?  And what about the salary cap?

Honestly...I am coming from the point of view that I do NOT want to have more stupid threads about some guy getting suspended for doing dope.....nor have to listen to arguments about whether or not discipline is handed out fairly,  and etc. etc.   BS that has nothing to do with the game.

Well Bernie wants to legalize in in all 50 states because, "Prohibition doesn't work."

  • I’d hate to see football playoffs become like hockey. But two more playoff spots and a longer schedule are likely to happen, if not now then eventually, as they both mean more money.

  • Meanwhile on the CBA beat......    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001104128/article/2020-salary-cap-projected-at-roughly-200-million

    Published: Feb. 28, 2020 at 12:18 p.m.    Updated: Feb. 28, 2020 at 01:26 p.m.

A potential new Collective Bargaining Agreement has yet to be ratified, but the salary cap is expected to rise once again.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Friday that the NFL and NFLPA are projecting a salary cap of roughly $200 million per team in 2020, per sources. Pelissero added negotiations are ongoing.

If players ratify the CBA, revenue would increase with expanded playoffs, which could cause the figure to rise, depending on whether additional revenue is counted toward salary cap or benefits. Bigger jumps would be expected in 2021 and beyond under the proposed new CBA.

The uncertain salary-cap figure could explain why many teams have been reticent to extend deals or make offers to their pending free agents up to this point in the offseason.

The salary cap was $188.2 million in 2019. This year's figure represents the seventh straight season of at least a $10 million bump.

With the players expected to vote on the CBA, which could happen as early as next week, the new league year, which marks the beginning of free agency, is on track to open on March 18, as scheduled, per Pelissero.

If we had a 17 game schedule, then I guess teams going 7-9 would not make the playoffs, now would they?   8-9?  7-10?
