"Pro Bowl left tackle Joe Thomas is dominating Sheard in practice. Cleveland's coaching staff is putting Sheard, a rookie second-round pick, against Thomas to get him ready for the regular season. But Thomas is stonewalling Sheard at nearly every turn and had a pancake block in Friday's practice. Cleveland hopes Sheard will gradually improve by facing arguably the NFL's best left tackle." By James Walker ESPN

"Sheard has gone against four-time Pro Bowler Joe Thomas on nearly every play in practice, which makes his production look meaningless. However, the reps against Thomas could accelerate Sheard's development process, putting him on the fast track to becoming a solid defensive in the NFL. His confidence level must stay high in order for him to succeed, because it can be tough on a young defensive end if he's getting dominated by a tackle in practice everyday. Eventually, Sheard will learn how to get around a tackle like Thomas, who is the cream of the crop at his position in the NFL." By Nick Shook Browns Beat

Hearing people say Taylor is hard to move and stuff like that is encouraging. Stuff like this is not, at least to me.

No one in their right mind thought he was going to dominate JT, which was my point. He's a 2nd round pick, he doesn't EXCLUSIVELY have to be dominated by JT to learn something. JT has been dominating guys for years in camp, where is all the great passrushers he helped along?

I will say mentally he seems in the right place, which is the only optimism I can gather from anything I've read about his camp.

I don't have a problem giving him an entire season to figure it out, but that doesn't mean I can't already be concerned.

  • yeah i really think that other fans calling other fans whiners and bitchers is a little overboard considering i haven't read a single post stating that (ok wrrebel saying he wants to puch holmgren in the face was a little out there, but...). we all as fans have the right to state our opinion. i know it sucks but a lot of times it's the brady vs. quinn, mangini vs. holmgren and mac vs. apple argument that will make people draw a line in the sand. i'm saying (when it comes to anyone here: bitchy or not bitchy) that opinions will change during the course of the season. that's guaranteed. i know that hey, "these WRs have really stepped up and showed us something.....wow i wish i hadn't been so hard on them this off season." "oops my bad."

BUT when you (i mean people that can read and discern from reality to fantasy) see glaring wholes in positions that could have been addressed by free agency and then call the FO on it.......makes you a whiny bitch? who cares if you rent the guy for a year at $4 mil? at least he'll give us some semblance of a pass rush. "oops there goes mendenhall around the left side........15 yard gain on 4 and 1." "awww shit now i look like a dumbass for complaining about people complaining because now i'm going to complain!!"

that's ok. let me know when you have to go down to rent-a-center and pay off your already used rear proj. tv because you just tossed your can of PBR through the screen. then we'll see whose bitchin.

  • I have no problem with discussions and people voicing their opinions. But when the same 2, 3, 5 posters take any and every opportunity to make smart ass, negative comments about our guys BEFORE they have yet to even take the freakin' field, is well.........Whining and bitching. Lets see the guys bust their asses a few games before we flap our gums at every single flippin' chance we get.

i agree. hey who knows all the media bobble heads and draft/training camp gurus can all be wrong. but when a consensus of people say "hey we could use depth at this or that position" and then we see show stoppers go for a cheap one-year deal......all i'm saying is why not us?

  • Joe Thomas is a top 2 LT in the league. It is up for discussion who is better between him and Jake Long, and I won't necessarily disagree either way... but. when MANY DEs have gone against him in the past and MANY have failed, I think that some people are worrying a bit much. If this kid was gonna come right in and beat Joe Thomas right away, you all would be saying we need a new LT. Also, If he was able to beat Joe Thomas right away, he would not have been a second round pick, prolly top 5, 10 at least, cause then you're thinking Mario Williams right out of college.

This team is gonna take its bumps and bruises along the way, but they should be fun to watch grow up.

  • Went to the Browns practice ... last week on...Tues? Wed?

    Anyways,

Phil Taylor is going to be a Star. He and Rubin are going to be feared in the middle.

Phil is 338 is it? And he doesn't have the huge belly on him. And he is very, very quick for

a guy his size, and very, very powerful with nice moves.

Little is going to be a Star. Watched him closely in practice, he can REALLY get off the los,

and fast, avoiding the bump and run. He has really serious instinct and skills, and made a

    couple of great catches.

Robeisky sp? (dammit) looks really skinny. But he may still come on strong performance wise.

The Browns have a fine bunch of young lb's - they have a bunch of rookies that can really catch your eye.

It seems so obvious that McCoy is the guy. He throws so accurately, with outstanding touch.

He just seems to really have "IT" bigtime.

Brown throws the ball way too hard, DA style, on short throws.

Hardesty really is noticeable - for doing cool wr things in practice. The Browns are going to have

a ton of hard decisions to make to cut down. If anybody wants me to, I can type up the 99 player current roster.

Jamie Mitchell - has quicker feet for a big guy, more so than I figured.

The s... Buster Skrine is it? is really fast, and a smart player.

Little has some serious moves - he can kick out and shift directions

on a pattern, and get open on an instant.

Most of all - Joe Haden is unbelievable, his athleticism with blazing speed is aweinspiring.

Ward did a beautiful job of breaking up a pass to Little, I think it was. The Browns secondary

can't help but be a strong point this coming year, barring injuries.

Again, Rubin and Taylor are going to dominate. Hell, that alone is going to be great fun to watch this season.

I think it was #50 - a nice sized lb that really is intense, and very quick.

BTW, I read where they are saving their money, avoiding gigantic salaries for some free agents....

because they are going to make sure they can pay Joe Thomas and two other top FA's next year and keep them.

    That's smart.

I read where the FB they drafted, will be blocking for Hillis on some plays. They will get TD's.

The undrafted fa - the wr kid from Kentucky - is a player, he can really move nicely, get open, and can

REALLY catch the ball. The Browns are really going to have a tough time with cutting back to the 52 whatever players.

Hey, they are going to have a tough time cutting back to 65.

    These Browns inspire each other.

    Just some impressions. We'll see.

    How did Sheard do?

  • sorry i probably posted my last couple of things getting this thread mixed up with the FA thread.

love to hear all the positive looks from fans that attend camp. gives me hope and makes me proud that our fellow fans are there giving us the updates.

there is nothing more i would love to see than to have each and every one of H and H's picks turn out to be all-pros. my concern is injuries, rookie unawareness and no veteran leadership on any side of the ball. of course joe thomas is going to make any DE look bad, especially a rookie on the other side of the ball on his own team. does that make us feel good or bad? what about the next DE down the ladder from shear or benard......????? so we're 2 deep at DE and what 2 deep at DT (plug)?

love joe haden and tj ward! love mccoy! hillis (i'm sorry guys) is running with a bullseye on his back and won't produce 1/2 of last year stats.

    just saying, another evaluation year?

Hillis won't get 600 yards this year? You're nuts, unless you're counting on the Madden Curse to strike. Barring injury- I see another 1,000 yard season- count on it.

  • Hillis had a bullseye on his back last year, but he still got 1200 yards.

I think he'll get 1500 this year since it's Colt's offense full-time, Colt has Little to throw to, and the offense is managed by a guy who has a clue.

I doubt he'll get 1500 simply due to everyone keying on him. I just hope he can stay healthy and get at least 1000. 1500 would be nice, but it's a huge undertaking.

From what's been said, Little is struggling catching the ball. I even read an article where it said he looked like a 4th WR.

We really should have tried to get a Vet WR in to help mentor the younger guys.

I've heard that he has had amazing days and poor days on about an equal ammount. Plus most of the time I heard that he is dropping the ball in traffic and tight corners. I'm not worried, he is a rookie after all, and he has shown great potential in camp.

Take it for what you will too but I read the camp report on profootballathority yesterday and he said Robiskie looked good to him. Said that he didn't understand why people said the guy couldn't get separation because he saw him getting away from both Haden and Young several times during plays.

This negativity is ridiculous. The guy hasn't played football in a year, of course he's rusty.

If we had gone for a vet, that would have been one less spot for a young guy already on our roster to develop.

  • How did Sheard do? hbrowntown

    ***************************************

The one time I saw Sheard, he was into the backfield very quickly.

The rest of the time, I couldn't see the guy, didn't hear anybody else talk about him.

My dumb hunch is, he is from a different defense in college, and is still learning.

Going against Joe Thomas, LOL, - JT is outstanding. Put Sheard on the right side against

Pashos (Sheard was always on the left side, away from us, from what I could tell.

I kept coming up with names of rookies that probably will not have a chance to make the team.

In lb drills, a bunch of them are very quick and agile. Maeava sp dammit......seemed to have

at least as quick feet and balance in the drills as any lb.

I did see this, btw: Hillis was talking to a coach or trainer on the sideline, and was referring to

an area on him - lower ab or high groin muscle area. He was fine though, and jogged across the field.

Here's an interesting note: On 7 on 7 drills, there were so many Browns -players- watching up close, that

it was hard to see past them. This is cool, this is a TEAM and they are excited.

Outside of Haden and Ward, the biggest impression on me, was Phil.Taylor. I predict come regular season,

this guy is unstoppable. Rubin was quoted as being amazed by him, too. He's biggest than Rubin they say,

but I'll tell you - the two of them will scare the crap out of opposing offenses.

My impression of Little - is that he has elite skills, and should have been a high first round draft pick, and would have

had he been playing all along,

But the mental makeup and intelligence and character of this entire group of Browns players is awesome. I have not

seen comradrie like this, ever before

  • My concerns?....

    1) Due to the lock out, too short a camp.

    2) Some blind fans. Too many looking BACK rather than AHEAD.

    3) Tony Grossi, aka "Debbie Downer". A half empty glass would look full to him. He has a way of accentuating the negative like no one else. Dieken needs to spike his water!!

We are inputting NEW systems with NEW Coaches & 61 Players from Rookie to 3rd year (55 Rookie to 2nd year) & many of those were either NOT utilized or thrust into a poor system!

This new TEAM of Leaders & Players need & certainly deserve our support. The whole attitude is more energetic & cohesive & the "core" Players certainly are (as a group) younger, more athletic, aggressive, tougher, & more eager to learn than those we have seen in years past. They seem to be truly motivated by these Coaches.

I'm pumped, but patient!! This is NOT the "same old, same old".

Hopefully he pans out. He does need some time to get into playing shape after sitting out all year. Cant wait to see what he does in preseason.

I still stand by thinking a vet would have been good for all the young guys. It's always good to get tips and help from a mentor. At all my jobs I learned the most from the old dudes.

I just dont get it. Mighty strong statement for the 1st week of camp. Apparently we can't form opinions or voice concerns about this team/players until at least the 1st preseason game........unless it gives people wood? I certainly dont entirely disagree with your post, but its obviously very hypocritical.

  • What the heyl is "hypocritical" about his post? Did you read it? His posts are very consistent - he's pumped about the Browns.

Apparently, it's wrong to be really positive about the Browns, in the opinions of those egos who are jumping to conclusions

    and being extremely negative.

What Canton Mike said was right on the money. Go to a practice and NOTICE how these guys are excited to be there.

Watch the skill level of the guys the Browns drafted.

It's freakin PRACTICE. They aren't going to be catching the ball when they are still starting out practicing. This early, they aren't practicing

learning how to catch a freakin football. They are learning and practicing the offense and defenses, and really ,watching out for each other because

they could be out of position so early in the new system on one side or the other.

McCoy was missing his targets? The practice I went to, he was impressing the crowd with his really excellent throws.

The players are going through the motions, picking more and more up each day. They aren't trying to win games now.

They are learning now. When the rest of us look at what SHOULD be looked at, we're seeing a team of character guys with a ton of talent who

are making subtle very smart moves very early in their camp, who already know a hell of a lot about what they are doing..

IMHO, the negativism is hardly valid so early. Now, you see bad throws, missed passes, bad blocks, no pressure, etc etc etc in the last preseason game and regular

season.... LOL.... then yeah. Raise hell about it. But to wail about that little stuff in the first week? Come on.

Nothing hypocritical there at all. When they get their playbooks down and can depend on each other to be where they are supposed to be,

the speeds of practice will start blazing, and the preseason games will be more and more impressive.

How dumb would it be to say Taylor is a bust because he hasn't hammered the qb in practice? Well, that's just an exaggeration of

some of the negative stuff out here. This early on, look for the things you must be seeing now, and later on, look for what you should be seeing then.

Reverse those, and sure. nobody would be excited. I'm seeing a bunch of players who are teammates and love being on the Browns practice field, and

who love the game. I haven't seen that enough in years since 99.

What the heyl is "hypocritical" about his post?

Your right CAL, his post directly is not hypocritical. I should have made that clearer. But if the negative is hardly valid, than so is the positive and we should all not post anything. That would be swell right? I appreciate the negative, positive(yours), and indifferent when they seem credible.

Everyone will be better(I hope) by week 1, but reality says that we should pay attention to the criticism just as much as the optimisms. That is all. Anything else is hypocritical.
