Wow We Look Bad

we're literally playing probably the best all around team in the NFL. They have by estimation 10-11 potential all star players and are pre-season favorites for a super bowl run. In contrast, we went 5-11 last year and are trying to rebuild with rookie players, including about half our starters out on defense. Holy jesus christ it just embarrasses me how ignorant some people are on this forum about football. We look bad against an elite team in a warmup game when half our starters aren't playing and it's like we're 0-12. Get an understanding about football guys, cmon

But we're in a division with two teams that are arguably on the same tier as this one. Hell, the Steelers thrashed their first team last week. We need to be able to compete with our division. We've seen a tale of two teams thus far, I still don't know which one we're gonna get.

I am just going to go ahead and not read what everyone else said and just post my take on the game.
The dream team is coming off of an embarrassing loss and came in with something to prove. Vick was on his game and the D wanted to get the job done. We saw what can happen when a 2nd year and super young WR corps goes up again 3 pro bowlers.
POSITIVES: Run game did better this game with Peyton and Hardesty in. Peyton's first two runs were what we all love to see out of him and his late catch in the 2nd quarter makes me think he has sticky glue on his hands. The pass rush was also there. If anyone else but Vick was in the pocket we would have had more than just 1 sack in the first half and considering that it was Vick I think the D-Line did a great job of containing him. Phil Taylor was dominate and showed he can be an all around DT. DQ did good, and that hit he had on Vick shouldn't have been flagged. He put his helmet right in Vicks chest and was a clean hard hit. Any time you see the other QB on the ground 8 times is a good thing.
I did not watch the 2nd half so I won't talk about it.

I have to comment on Jackson's hit on Vick. Pure BS. The most mobile qb in the NFL, the guy has a clean shot coming in at full throttle, and he's supposed to stop and say "Mr Vick, would you mind if I hit you?" The ref even told Jackson when he questioned him about it. "If it had been regular season, I wouldn't have called it. Go play flag football for the qbs all ready, this is getting ridiculous.
Game changing play.

Remember this: the Eagles scored nearly all their points off turnovers caused by our substitute punt returner.
Can I assume that when things start for real that Josh Cribbs is going to be the one back there returning punts and not these rookies?

True Gipper, Turnovers will kill you. Wet field, wet ball, forcing the play a bit too much missing starters on both sides all contributed to the poor play last night and poor play it was. Luckily it's just preseason. Are some of us guilty of getting too excited and confident in the preseason yes just as some are too quick go super neg. in the preseason. Choco's reply said all that needed to be said in reply to KGL's rant.
I don't know if I would play the starters more next week against the bears than originally planned. Traditionally 1 QTR. That may expose them to risk of injury going against some guys who may be in do or die situations. But,I would put the screws to them in practice the next 2 weeks. Work them hard and get them good and pissed to go after the Bengals.
Once again its a good thing that was just preseason.

A couple of glaring issues on defense. Jayme Mitchell is horrible and doesn't pursue, watch a replay of the last 2 games..He jogs most of the time..He has had 1 tackle in 2 games, has no pass rush moves except run up the field and a terrible motor..BAD SIGN...SHEARD LOOKS PROMISING..
Benard CANNOT play DE in a 4-3..He looks like he's getting thrown of the night club on some plays and gets stopped dead in his tracks too much. Robinson looks just a little to heavy to play there. Sanford actually looks pretty good and has a great motor..Taylor is the real deal though but he need some help

browns have a LONG way to go before they're a competetive team and it's nice to hear one of your own say it. i don't know why everyone thinks this combo in your FO are the messiahs that everyone is DESPERATELY trying to make them out to be but when they came in the browns had a LONG way to go to be a championship caliber team and they aren't any closer right now.
What the FIIK do you know about how to operate an NFL football team? Why do we think that are current FO is in better position to do something? It is called history. They have a resume of success, unlike anyone else we have had here.
Mike Holmgren, SB winning coach, took another team to the SB.
Heckert. GM of a team that made a SB appearance and 5 NFC title game appearances.
And in two years they HAVE made great strides, with talent acquisition. Are they done? By no means.
Yes, the Browns DID have a long way to go. They have gone part of that way, but certainly yes they still have some distance to go.
And there is nothing "desperate" about it. They have an organized disciplined plan which they are following.
Are some fans frustrated with waiting? Sure. But fans don't count for shit. You and your opinions included. It only matters what this FO does.
You have simply had stupid dumb luck. The Steelers have had good front office and coaching success. And you haven't contributed a cabbage fart to that effort any more than I or anyone else on here has. You could have easily been a fan of all the surrounding teams that are essentially just like the Steelers only they haven't had the FO stability. Like Buffalo, Cleveland, Cinci, Detroit. Steeler fans are no better or different than the fans of any of these teams. Its just that your organization has been somewhat better.

Taylor has help. It is called Ahtyba Rubin. But, I agree, the Browns OLBs looked constantly overmatched. And I don't know what these guys are seeing in D'Qwell Jackson. He makes an occasional open field play, but usually I see him getting knocked down like a rag doll or he is failing to fill the gaps that he is supposed to fill in the running game. I keep seeing to opponents make big yardage either up the middle or between the gaps and I ask "where is DQ?". Where he is is he is usually pancaked on his ass or stuck in traffic instead of filling the holes he is supposed to fill.
-
I'm not mad at our defensive we put Vick on his ass a few times last night but we only made one major mistake if you play against a scrambling QB you only play a cover 2 9/10ths of the game the browns played a lot of prevent style 3nd and 10 or worse for philly and they explioted us for it.
I'll stick to my guns Browns 11-5 period

Here's the deal.
Offense lacked intensity. Not sure why. Perhaps they wanted to get the reps in but not kill themselve either. This is the pre-season.
Some dropped passes. The one pass in the end zone to Hillis looked tipped but looked like it might have been catchable. Evan moore dropped another good pass.. Not sure what happened there. It just seemed like we were holding back, and we were pulling punches and for a very good reason - It's the pre-season.
The oline didn't play well at all... And if that keeps up were going to see the second coming of, um.. what's his name, the guy we drafted in '99 out of Kentucky, um... well, you can see how memoriable that was.
Defense, yes, Taylor looked great. I would like to see tighter coverage as our secondary seems to be playing a little loose, but if we can keep that pressure on the QB like that, it will produce 4th downs and turnovers.
I'm not worried, but I can see the coaching staff saying, let's go through the motions get out of here without injury.
-
* Like Modell or hate him, he knew football, he mettled, AND he was ALWAYS making plays for controversial and high profile players.......... Warfield, Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, Kelly, Collins, Alzado. The Lerner Browns don't EVER make plays for the top players, the exciting, game breakers.
Jim Brown was drafted in '57 and Modell didn't by the team until'61. Warfield drafted then traded to Miami by Modell. Ernie Davis due to circumstances beyond anyone's control didn't work out but could have been legendary. Leroy Kelly drafted 1964.
Your Ghoulisional!

It's not the fault of the substitute punt returner. Cribbs tripped over one of our own players once, and we lost the ball on that, too. It's the guy who ran into him. The returner is too focused on catching the ball to be worrying about hitting one of our guys.

Why the optimism? Maybe because by comparison H&H look like forking geniuses compared to the s**t that's been running the team since 1999. Because Heckert seems to be drafting guys that can play football for a change, getting guys in the third and lower rounds that can actually contribute, and dumping stiffs like the departed one year wonder Derek Anderson. It doesn't take much brains to pick guys like Joe Thomas or Braylon Edwards when you have the third overall pick- and then go on to draft garbage in the lower rounds- that's whats killed the Browns. Hell- the previous GMs have even whiffed in the first round on future HOFers still on the board- Ladanian Tomlinson being the most notable but not only example. Hardesty blew out his knee last year and the 2010 draft class still yielded three starters, and a couple of significant backups- add in another starter this year as Lauvao has moved in as the starting RG. Getting Colt McCoy in the third round- not bad if you can find your starting qb there. This year's draft looks to be even better. I happened to notice Phil Taylor was abusing the Eagles starting O-line. Looks like four more starters and two significant backups in Skrine and Jordan.
Trades? With 20\20 hindsight getting Peyton Hillis and a draft pick from the Broncos in exchange for Brady Quinn has to look like one of the biggest cases of highway robbery in the last few years in the NFL.
They've played the FA market wisely. Yeah, this team is nowhere near ready to make a serious playoff, much less Super Bowl run- but the core of a solid team is starting to fall into place.
-
Hoorta,
I could not agree more. It looks like the F.O. strategy is to build through the draft. Maybe a FA for depth here and there. Resign the good players to long term contracts. Then in 2013 when you must use 90% of your cap we might, just might sign a key FA to help us over the hump to be a contender. But yes I agree we are 2 years away at this point at least. We need 2 more years of solid drafting before we do anything of significance.

I am not going to make any excuses but to me this team looks better losing than it did winning in years gone by because this team is young there is still hope and its only preseason..
It was easy to figure that after the trouncing the stoolers delivered to the eagles last week that they were going to wake up and come on hard against the somewhat dinged up young browns..
Philly is a stacked team projected to compete at a high level this year and the browns are what they are, a young rebuilding team with 6 dinged up starters and a lot of fresh new faces, new coaches and new systems..
There is going to be some growing pains maybe even a bunch, but what i can tell the vengeful fangini's, the diehard faithful and the Retardedly impatient alike is that for once randy got it right but H&H cant just erase 11 years of horrible drafting, wretched coaching and bad management overnight or with a handful of FAs, it takes time and lerner has to be feeling better about this clubs future and will give H&H all the time they need and deserve to finish what they started and convert this team into a champion..
As for me and i believe the majority of browns fans are feeling rejuvenated about this teams current rebuild and are ready to get behind our team and front office for the long haul, there will be no more musical chairs with coaches and or GMs, its just time to do it or die trying!

No, I don't know for sure, but I think it is easy for anyone with modicum of common sense to figure it out. And the reason I can tell that the Browns have made strides is because I do have a modicum of common sense that you don't possess to tell when someone is bringing something real to the table.
Sure, you don't think those strides have been made because you WANT to think they have not been made. That does not mean they have not been made.
