If someone were to look at you, and try to target what they thought you would want to hear, this is the shit they would come up with. YOU, are the target market, pal. I didn't even bother wasting my time watching the game.

That said, let me provide you with some education about musical production at events such as the SB.

    1) The performace quality, live or otherwise, WAS exactly as you saw it. Big, impotent, disconnected and in a word, lousy.

    2) People in crowds are lemmings and usually drunk lemmings. Regardless of how bad the half-time performance is, the average NFL attendee, that is to say, people like you, don't have any training or knowledge to judge the quality of a musical performance anyway.

Case in point, the labels, networks and other media keep shoveling the same kind of shit to... people like YOU, and people like you continue to waste their lives paying attention to this shit.

    3) 15 year old girls don't purchase Madonna. Girls who were 15 20 years ago purchase madonna. This would be? That's right, pimple dick............ YOUR generation.

    4) Being that I understand and earn a good portion of my income from music royalties, let me explain how a has-been like Madonna comes to take center stage at the 46th SB.

Again remember, people who attend big events are lemmings. Once again, you are in this demographic. No matter what shit they put on, the crowd, all high on booze, drugs and teh excitement of the SB will walk away talking about how FANTASTIC the 1/2 time show was. Oh, they will assure you.......... you had to be there to really appreciate it.

Yes, even though the accoustics at an NFL stadium are as much as 270 degrees out of phase, and offer as much as

1.25 seconds of delayed echo and reverb; yes, even though the noise floor at a halftime is a minimum of 105 dB, and the require volume places the music louder than even a set of well-trained ears (this is whare I would come in) could discern.................... and you have a playground for the biggest pile of bullshit shoveled since the networks proclaimed Bernie Kosar to be super intelligent and a great businessman (he's broke).

Trust me, the halftime show was shit. Even more so live because what TV audiences heard was the cleaner, more refined mix through the mixing console.

    5) If you want to know how an old whole like Madonna came to be chosen, all you need to do is research a wee bit as to who owns her publishing rights, mechanical rights and syncronization rights. The royalties on a new release? Given the audience size was and will continue to be in replay,,,,,,,, HUGE.

Put a new comer, independent artist in there? Ah, not so much.

Madonna was chosen SPECIFICALLY because the demographic who made her wealthy, was the majority demographic watching the SB tonight. HAd Madonna released a new CD/single on regular media, she would have been lucky to sell 250,000 copies, not enough to break even on the project.

HOWEVER, given teh size and demographic of the people watching the game? They will be buying SB memerobilia throughout the year. And I promise you, women your age will all be squeeling and saying OMG at Best Buy when they see the old whor'e ne release on the shelves.

That's how it works, pimple dick.

Guy gets an article published in Accordion Queers Weekly and thinks he's "in the business".

I once read a book about animals, let me tell you how being an aardvark works.

  • Kid rock?

  • ^ Good choice...

Being the father of one of those "15 yo's 20 years ago", I had high hopes for Madonna, but when the highlight of your show is your entrance... 😳

To pull off a performance in a SB halftime show the #1 priority is sustained energy...

    Madonna entered with it...

    Madonna closed with it...

But the middle sagged like a pair of 53-yo boobs...

I'm embarrassed for you that you'd mention it here.

  • I'm not

  • I really don't understand why Green Day hasn't had a halftime show. They're not my favorite band by any means, but old people know enough to have heard of them, Armstrong's voice isn't shot (like say, everyone in the Who), and they're pretty damn popular in younger generations. Who the fuck wants to listen to a pop star in the twilight of her career while watching a football game?

    People here are so uninformed.

This is the SUPERBOWL...and for its halftime show it is going for SUPERSTARS.

That is why you see the headliners being.....The Who. The Rolling Stones. Bruce Springsteen. Madonna. Paul McCartney.

It isn't the mediocre Bowl, and they are not going for mediocre stars.

They can bring in supporting groups like Ce Lo Green or whomever..

but the Headliner, now, is going to be a well established persona...and likely a Rock n Roll Hall of Fame act.

Here is something all y'all might like to consider. Until 1990, the top name acts that appeared at the halftime show of the Super Bowl included the following:

    Up With People....5 times

    Carol Channing

    Andy Williams

    Disney's "Its a Small World"

    Ella Fitzgerald

    Al Hirt

    Mickey Rooney

    George Burns

    Pete Fountain

    The Rockettes.

    Chubby Checker

    and various College bands.

At that time, they started "getting hip". They starting booking acts like:

1991: New Kids on the Block

    1992: Gloria Estafan

    1993:Michael Jackson

1994: Country stars Tanya Tucker, Clint Black, The Judds

1995: Patti LaBelle and Teddy Pendergrast

    1996: Diana Ross

    1997:The Blues Brothers (post Belushi)

1998: Motown acts Smokey Robinson, The Temptaions, Martha Reeves

1999: Chaka Khan, Stevie Wonder, Kiss

2000: Phil Collins and Christina Aguilera

2001: Aerosmith, N'Sync, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige and Nelly

    2002: U2

2003: Shania Twain, No Doubt, Sting

Then came the "wardrobe" malfunction year of 2004 when they had big stars Janet Jackson and he boobs and Justin Timberlake. The SuperBowl committee obviously decided they had come too far with the attempt to appeal to the "new, hip" kids. Besides, the rating were not as good. So, what did they do? They decided they no longer needed "B" class stars. They needed Superstars. The best that ever was, and ones that wouldn't be controversial. So, you got:

    2005: Paul McCartney

    2006: The Rolling Stones

    2007: Prince

    2008: Tom Petty

    2009: Bruce Springsteen

    2010: The Who

2011: They decided to once again go current with Blackeyed Peas and Usher, it went OK.

2012: They decided to mix it up: old school: Madonna. Newer school: Celo Green, Nikki Minaj

But they also included this performer called "M.I.A." who first gave the finger on stage, then used "shit" in her language.

So, for all of you claiming that you want newer acts....this "M.I.A." just screwed that up for you. Because of he BS, you can now expect another diet of all time...but older greats.

How do you like this fare for future lineups, if some of them live that long:

    Bob Dylan

    Tina Turner

    Van Morrison

Elton John (he did a commercial for yesterday, why not the show?)

    Rod Stewart

    Neil Young

    David Bowie

    Joni Mitchell

    The Eagles

    Fleetwood Mac

    Santana

    Billy Joel

    James Taylor

    Aerosmith

    Paul Simon

    Elvis Costello

    Bob Seger

    The Pretenders

    R.E.M

    John Mellencamp

    Neil Diamond

    Guns n Roses

    Red Hot Chili Peppers

So, be glad with these.... and STFU or maybe the Super Bowl will bring back Up With People and Andy Williams types...(you want Michael Buble?)

  • Great... love catering to the baby boomers

  • Whoa gip, green day is as big as the black eyed peas. Bigger even. I have no idea why you would shit on green day doing the halftime show and then suggest joni mitchell, Neil diamond, the pretenders, Elvis costello or van morrisson.

  • Madonna is sooo fine. Hottest 53 yo i know of. best thing to come out of Michigan EVER.

i'd drink her effin bath water.

  • black eyed peas suck. as a matter of fact there isn't one or two bands that i WOULD have paid to see before they went over the hill or commercialized. u2 and bowie, that's it.

the organizers of the HTS should all be fired.

  • Oh that wasn't you in accordian queers quarterly? All that other crap you mentioned is small potatoes next to aqq

  • Whoa gip, green day is as big as the black eyed peas. Bigger even. I have no idea why you would shit on green day doing the halftime show and then suggest joni mitchell, Neil diamond, the pretenders, Elvis costello or van morrisson.

Maybe in your mind....and maybe in certain charts, Green Day is as big as the Black eyed peas.

But that is like saying the Black Keys are as big as the Black Eyed Peas.

The Black Keys may in fact be one of the best acts going...and I would be prejudiced toward them, they being from Akron....but they are not a scintillating live act.

But in the Pop culture World Green Day is viewed as either an emo band, or heavy metal, or whatever.

They may as well bring out Eno to do "Another Green World" as have Green Day, as high as their profile is.

People will think that the Packers are the halftime show if you have Green Day.

And none of this is meant to disparage Green Day musically.

But, I guarantee you, if it comes to high profile, every one of the acts on the list I gave will have a much higher profile than Green Day.

Add Alice Cooper to the list.

  • Whats with MIA giving the finger ? What a bitch !

The Black Keys are popular, but they're not on the same level as Green Day, not even close. They might be among the most popular bands in the game now, but their popularity and longevity come nowhere near Green Day's. I wasn't trying to attack older music by any means, but too many of these guys are past their primes. Daltrey's singing was awful when The Who had the half time show; his voice is shot. I don't want to see that. I think a third of your list would be artists who were once great singers but their voices are toast.

Plus, you're going to put REM on that list but exclude Green Day? Since you love stats so much, here you go.

Made the Billboard 200 Albums of the Year Chart in: 8 times

    Guess which band is which.

  • Green Day burnt some bridges when they took that little detour into the political realm. It was a few years ago but it still lingers in terms of marketability. Now I'm not huge into music but I can't think of an extremely popular song of their's off the top of my head. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't they start wearing large amounts of eyeliner? That probably doesn't help their case much either if true.

It doesn't matter, Green Day does not have cache with the pop music crowd....and the Super Bowl is all about the Top Pop.

    Albums don't mean shit.

If that were the case then Jethro Tull and Procul Harum would the shit.

They aren't when it comes to POPULAR Music.

You are far more likely to see the following long before you see Green Day:

Katy Perry, Tiny Canadian Pussy Douche, Eminem, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Mariah Carey, Beyonce/Jay-Z, Kelly Clarkson, J Lo, Adele, Alicia Keys, Taylor Swift....hell, even Snoop Dog long before you see Green Day.

Sorry, that is just the way it is. Geen Day may be better musically than everyone of them...If I gave them enough of a listen I might like them better than every one of them...but that is not going to give them the pop music stones to get on the Super Bowl halftime show....as the lead act.

They may get a support role, like Ce Lo Green and those others did to Madonna...or, maybe in 25 years after they have been inducted into the RRHOF and have become a nostalgia act they may get the SB gig. But not now.
