Coaching Wish List

The Browns Board
34 21 1.9k
  • I live out of state and was able to catch my first Browns game of the season today. Luckily, we forced 8 turnovers.

The shocking thing to me was how unbelievably bad our play calling was. We ran one time I noticed out of a spread (passing) formation, and Trich took it 15 yards for a TD.

The rest of the running plays were out of a 2/3 TE bunch formation. To me with the speed in the NFL, you need to do some misdirection. Running out of the bunch every time is going to get the safeties all over your RB 2-3 yards downfield. This is what I saw most of the game - Low and behold, Clark (Steelers FS) had 9 tackles.

It went both ways. When we brought in 3 WR or spread the field out a bit, we threw everytime. (except the trich TD) We very rarely threw out of the bunch formation.

We run an offense a 13 year old does when he plays Madden. 5 wide when he's passing, Bunch when he's running. If we are going to tip it off that badly, at least put Cribbs in and run the WildDawg to get the extra blocker on running plays.

All that said - who is tops on everyone's wish list for the inevitable coaching change for next year? Could we lure Chip Kelly from Oregon? Would love to see an innovative offensive mind.

That, plus another shut down corner or pass rushing OLB/DE in the first round and this team makes the playoffs next year.

How do you notice something that didn't happen?

  • A contemporary hybrid clone of these three bad asses is what the Browns need:

Two WRs wide left, single TE right. Offset I right. Wide Oline splits. Ran left.

Not a spread formation true, but certainly not a 2/3 TE Tight obvious running formation. Pittsburgh had 8 in the box but one of those 8 was so was out on the WRs so really only 7 in the box. Lead blocker sealed the run blitzing LB leaving only the S able to make the tackle. He missed. Free lineman was able to seal the backside LB.

It is pretty sad that someone like me can predict what play we're going to run based on the formation. If an idiot like me can do it, how hard do you think it is for defensive coaches who do nothing but study film 18 hours a day to do?

Shurmer drives me nuts, but one thing we all need to acknowledge is the players are still playing very hard for him.

Maybe it's just their personal pride, or maybe they do believe in him. Despite all the conservatism, the players haven't given up...and we now have won 2 of 3 against our division rivals at home.

I'm not a fan of conservative football at all, I want an attacking team. Would Shurmer change his approach if he & his staff get more tools in the toolbox? A speedy ILB, another CB, perhaps the defense would allow him to gamble more on offense? Just playing devil's advocate here...fire away.

UHHHHHH why are they playing hard, NEW OWNER PLAYING FOR A JOB. Shurmer Sucks

I've been harsh on unShurmer, as harsh as anyone. The team was scrapping even before the Haslam purchase if I recall it correctly.

I hate his offense, plain & simple.

  • I've been saying this all along. Keep Shurmur. Give the franchise some stability and see where the future leads. I laugh at how Shurmur gets blamed for everything and everyone else get's a pass. Weeden is a average QB at best. Every head coach in the NFL will tell you on passing plays there are three levels and based on protection and who gets open the QB makes his read and his throw. It isn't rocket science, John Gruden doesn't have a top secret playbook that will make Weeden into Peyton Manning.

  • Starting to have that feeling that Shurmur/Heckert are gonna be here next year.. you don't keep Shurmur just to keep him, the guy is on the level of dog shit when it comes to developing/coaching players!!!

  • How about Ken Wisenhut(sp) if they run him out of Arizona? seems a no nonsense kind of guy, and the D is playing pretty good. No stability at QB there as well.

i'll not say that i have killed shurmur for his coaching

    BUT

what i did do is BITCH about how he got this job. if you wanted to see a browns team play hard and disciplined for a coach then you should have been around here 2 or 3 years ago when mangini was here.

shurmur is like weeden. you can't support a guy because he's a rookie and makes mistakes and say he'll be alright and then bitch about someone who basically is in the same exact position. this franchise needs to be 'locked down'. no movement (after holmgren leaves) whatsoever.

yes there is a glimmer of hope on both sides of the ball. a couple of adjustments FA and draft wise and is ee us being a powerhouse in this division for years to come.

keep everybody (except holmgren), let everyone get another year under their belt, with an OC calling the plays and (if that happens) i guarantee a 10 win season next year.

    money.

One of the main complaints about Shurmur is that he seems to NOT give clear guidance to his rookie QB; that he shows completely unimaginative play calling; and that he seems to constantly putting his offense...and his rookie QB into untenable situations.

He exudes no enthusiasm, no confidence, no bravado, no intestinal fortitude. Those may not be necessary, but he also seems as dull with his scheme as he is dull in his personality.

I think teams definitely take on the personality of their coach. Look at the 49ers or Saints (when Payton was there) or Ravens or even the Steelers. Look at the Chargers and Browns as perfect examples of this from a negative side as well. Look at the Jets...that team talks more than any other and so does their coach with nothing to back it up.

  • Hate to be the bearer of bad news . . . but it doesn't sound like Shurmur's going anywhere:

    http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2012/11/cleveland_browns_owner_jimmy_h_5.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

Q: What are your first impressions of your new team since you took over in mid-October?

A: (Haslam) I think we have better players and we're better coached (than last year). We're 3-8, but if you went back through the season, I could make a case where we could easily be 6-5. Dallas, Philly, Indy are all games I think we should've won. If we win those three games, we're 6-5 and in the hunt for the playoffs, right? We're very close. We weren't competitive against the Giants after jumping off to an early lead, but every other game we've been in in the fourth quarter. As you know, some of them have gone down to the last minute or two.

Sure hope I'm wrong, but I fear I'm not 🙁

    .

  • Well there is ample ammo to dispatch Shurmur I haven't made up my mind yet either way. I want to see the full season before I decide. I dread getting another coach and having to rebuild yet again. I am tired of that. A new HC could mean dumping of players in favor of "his" guys. The key to any successful franchise is stability. I see the team improving on both sides of the ball, we have talent, which I think speaks well for Heckert staying. I think big issues are how Shurmur calls plays and manages games at times. I think the play calling at times has been too pass happy and repetitive. I would like to see QB adjustments at the line, Shurmur says QB is allowed to audible, but we never see that. That is a coaching failure in my opinion. But I think Shurmur is getting a little bit better. BTW players don't always play for pride etc, look at Philly, getting players to play hard when your season is over is partly pride and partly coaching to some degree, you just can't dismiss that because you don't like the HC. The Browns end up with 6 wins, I think it will be hard to not give Shurmur another year.

  • Not a shurmer fan, but seems to be making strides. If he is let go, and the Arizona Cardinals continue to deterioate, does anyone Think that Whisenhut would be a good fit here? spent some time with the Steelers organization(6yrs). And seems to be a pretty good coach. As for having ties with JH, I have no idea. But if he did, could anyone see him possibly coming here? and do you think he would be a good fit?

Became an NFL head coach for the first time when hired by Arizona in January of 2007.

He came to the Cardinals with 10 years of experience as an NFL assistant coach and also played nine seasons in the league as a tight end/H-Back.

Before coming to AZ, Whisenhunt spent the previous six seasons with the Steelers. For the first three he was tight ends coach and then was offensive coordinator for three, helping the team earn a victory in Super Bowl XL.

Previously coached at the pro level with the Jets (2000), Browns (1999) and Ravens (1997-98); began his coaching career in the collegiate ranks with Vanderbilt (1995-96).

    PER Arizona.com

  • Only if Wisenhunt bring Ray Horton with him. Wisenhunt has put together one of the worst QBs stable ever. So who knows what he would do here to better the team.

I'd love to get Gruden, but I don't think this is his #1 choice. Cowher would obviously be amazing to get. Chip Kelly no thanks.

How would you have compared Belichick to those factors back in the late 90's (or now)? Let me help:

    Enthusiasm- 0

    Confidence (conveyed)- 2

    Bravado- 0

    Intestinal Fortitude- 9

    Personality- 0

Plus he gave the fans the middle finger when it came to humiliating Kosar and Mack right before our eyes.

You're right. Those things are not necessary.

Well, a lot of that is why I conflicted over Shurmur. Yes, the NFL is now an instant gratification league/a what have you done lately league....but the fact is, some of the greatest coaches in history didn't start out very well.

Chuck Noll....two seasons of like 1 or two wins

    Bill Walsh....the same

Tom Landry....first 5 years he had a losing record

Mike Shanahan...basically a failure in Oakland

Bill Belichick...we know that story, first a failure then a success

    and others like that.

Of course, for every story like those above there are probably a dozen who failed at first and remained a failure.

  • For me it's to the point I don't really root one way or the other. I'll leave it to Jimmy and Joe.

I think Heck has done a pretty decent job and while I have been critical of Shurmer, the team is progressing. A young team I might add.

It will be interesting too see or hear what the players feel. If they are buying in to the process and starting to feel the fire, change might not be our best option.

If we do make a change, the difference IMO is it won't be a blow up...we have enough good young players a new coach or GM isn't going to toss them aside. If they do, we'll know pretty quickly about the decision making ability of this new regime.

  • I will add that this game against the Chiefs is a big time trap game for us.

Shurmer might not be able to save his hide with a win, but he might skin himself if we go out there and lose in miserable fashion.

This is a must win game...make it 3 in a row...get the guys accustomed to stringing 3-4 wins together as that is the way you win in this league.

Agree completely. Despite the Chiefs having the worst record, they have played teams hard at times. They beat the Panthers and Cam Newton last week. They lost to the Broncos by only 17-9. They lost in OT to the Steelers 16-13. They lost to the Ravens by only 9-6. They beat the Saints 27-24.

The Browns by no means are a team that can take beating anyone for granted.
