Will The Browns Screw This Up?

The Browns Board

  • In the past The Browns could screw up a wet dream! I am going into the season with a clean slate on this new FO. I think Haslam and Co. will make a splash this off season for the better. Also it just insane that we have so much cap room to work with. If we over spend so be it. Landing Avril and a CB,G,S would be Ideal, then lock up Joe Haden and whoever else.

  • Short answer: yes.

Long answer: hopefully not, but yes.

LOL! I miss the old like button at times like this.

  • Why didn't the Browns get Anquan Boldin??

An effing 6th round pick for him? That's chump change!

Jim Harbaugh is the smartest coach ever, and he just raped the Ravens like he raped the Chiefs.

Why didn't the Browns get Anquan Boldin? Well let's see here, and I'll keep it brief. We're in the AFC North.

Baltimore won't trade within the division

  • Boldin is old and past his prime, but having a veteran presence around for Little and Gordon could have been huge. But like others have said, Baltimore is way too smart to trade within the division.

Don't worry, we'll get 'em with Kruge and/or Ellerbe.

  • this FA period will do a lot to answer a few ?'s in my book.

are lombardi and banner's talent evaluation up to snuff? is haslam going to give the o.k. to get in the game fast and furious? will the FO team not blow their wad on over-rated has-beens?

there is enough GOOD dynamic starters in FA this year whom, if we sign, can clear the path for a definite plan for what to do in the draft.

i tell you what though, if they only sign a couple of nobodies and we once again go into 'browns' mode, i'll really start to doubt the legitimacy of this FO.

hopefully haslam understands the importance of making a big splash in his first year, getting the fans behind him.

  • So we have all been Browns fans for a long time and we have seen them make mistake after mistake over the years. And in FA they have made a ton of mistakes. They love to overpay players, or acquire talent that isn't really even that talented. Sometimes they seem to even be cursed. When They have gotten it right it has turned out to go so very wrong. Remember when we signed the top FA available (LeCharles Bentley)? How many practice snaps did he play before his career was over. Remember when we took a gamble on an injured Chris Spielman? Well we have been there and done that!

Now we have a new owner, a new front office, and a new attitude. We have a TON of money to spend and we have a team with a bunch of young pieces in place. All of these things should help entice FA's to come to Cleveland without us having to break the bank. Right?

Well we are getting really close to the the opening bell and I hear we are having conversations with agents but I DO NOT hear that we are reaching any verbal agreements.

Give a prediction on the Browns FA class for this year. Take into consideration the level of talent you think we will land, how much of it and how much we will shell out to do it. Then we can all grade it again after it is done. πŸ™„

That's because the commish put out an e-mail threatening major violations for anybody who is reaching agreements before tomorrow at 4PM. That's why you haven't heard about verbal agreements with ANYBODY!!

I'll bet our FA will work out okay. Hopefully we don't make too huge of a splash b/c that NEVER WORKS OUT!!! A couple pieces would be nice.

They couldn't afford to keep Boldin at his current contract number so they go SOMETHING for him. It was either that or cut him and I'm sure Boldin had some say in where he'd end up.

As far as the rest of the thread is concerned the first problem for the Browns is being able to say "Are we going to screw up THIS FA CLASS" building through free agency isn't the answer. You grab a piece here or there but you don't go nuts and the Browns would be stupid to go nuts. A lot of your recent drafts are going to need second contracts at some point. I sure as hell wouldn't tie all that money up in a bunch of free agents.

  • I have a different and perhaps more practical take. You can't expect to win with big holes on the team (vis-a-vis talent) and I think this FO group understands that. You might not win with talent but you certainly will lose without it. So for now, we have to use FA and pay them until draft picks are ready to take over. I see the Browns being active this year, and perhaps they will pay a premium. But those guns for higher should be seen as dwindling over time as the team becomes more and more draft-based. The last group were willing to take 5 years w/o FA's but that's ridiculous. You have to start by fielding a talented team.

Hey dimwit, we are changing back to 3-4 and need people to fill holes. We can't possibly be competitive through the draft alone, at least on defense.

Its easy to say that same rhetoric having arguably the best DC the league has ever had on your team's staff for as long as its been. You can be slow in your development of young players, like Worilds, when you have quality in front of them. Well guess what, we don't have a lot of talent to bring 'the project guys' along at such a pace.

A few FAs won't bother the Browns because the money is fine and the draft is lacking a 2nd round pick.

  • I'm always on the fence about the Browns in free agency. On the one hand, a team like ours has to overpay to get top talent. No one in their sane mind who didn't grow up a Browns fan is going to take a discount to come here. On the other hand, there's so many examples of people getting massively overpaid by mediocre teams and not panning out. I think a team has to consider if a guy is just trying to land that fat contract as opposed to really wanting to play hard for a team.

I don't think we expect anybody to take a discount to come here, we just shouldn't overpay. But I agree with your post. FA signing can be just as unsettling as drafting a Brady Quinn. πŸ™‚

  • Looks like we signed our #1 target, so I say no.

not for nothing but they had a list of FA QBs available on bill polian's list and DA was number one.

    not shitting you.

It's not a surprise actually. How many QB's are out there as Free Agents right now? Ryan Fitzpatrick is available now I guess but he didn't exactly tear it up once he got his huge contract. I wouldn't really mind bringing either one of them in to compete with Weeden for the job next season.

I heard this one today and it makes sense...Cassell goes back to New England and then NE trades Mallett. I wouldn't give NE much of anything for a guy who hasn't played but it's an interesting thought.

If they brought in someone to be the new backup, in my mind the trade value of Mallet drops. If they were going to move him they would need to do it before the fact, otherwise have to stick with losing value on drafting him in the first place.

  • Mallet can stay the third or 4th stringer in NE. If NE proposes to bring back Cassell that means that he has learned that Mallet is dumber than a box of rocks and any attempts to trade him are just their way of trying to find a fish stupid enough to swallow the bait.

The question is: is Lombardi that fish.

    Of course he is.
