OK, they signed this safety Walker. That should make Skeptical et al happy now that they are getting some depth in the backfield, no?

Presumably, I mean this guy's going to start I guess because Gipson is so bad?

(In fact....unless a guy's name is Manning, SEC QBs ain't all that great overall)

Oh, I agree, that not all people who are successful in the SEC will automatically make it in the pros. I have questions about Manziel, for instance, as well as a guy named Mingo who played at LSU . What you do, though, is closely watch and evaluate talent. Hardesty was a very good player in the one year he played a full season in college. So was Bacarri Rambo, the safety from Georgia the Browns could have drafted, who is better than Slaughter in my judgment. Lombardi really blew it in this draft.

Walker is a complete stiff. Browns missed their chance in the draft when they could have taken safety Thomas from Fresno State and DB Webb from William & Mary. That would have been what a professional GM would have done and those picks would have added depth to give the Browns a chance to compete in 2013. But, alas, the Browns have a clueless clown, Lombardi, as their GM, and they will probably go 5-11 again in 2013 instead of climbing to 7-9 or 8-8.
If I had been running the show, we would have gone all out to sign FA DB Smith, then taken Tavon Austin with pick 1 to take the offense to a higher level, and then taken a safety with pick 3 and a TE with pick 4 and another DB with pick 5. Would have been great!

Hardesty has been injured his whole time....Rambo will be in rehab before you can blink...and Slaughter will Slaughter anyone coming into his zone the way Webster Slaughter slaughtered defensive backs.
Rambo won't be able to bring his AKM on the field with him, thus he will be rendered harmless.

Thank God that you are not the GM.
First off, who is this "Smith"? If you mean Sean Smith, he was rated a far worse CB than Sheldon Brown.
Austin might become a good player...but by no means was his position a priority for this team. They have a very similar player to Austin in Travis Benjamin...and they really needed to work on their defense.
I too am not that thrilled with the trade of those picks...but that is what it is. I think the Browns did address their needs at the LB spot, CB and safety...and for next year they will have upgraded picks. Two thirds and 2 4ths
Your plan would not have been great. From what I see it would have been worse.....at best just different.

And there really isn't any reason to be mad. They signed two RB and the dropped two. Cook and Rouse are gone.
Oh and Hardesty is far from safe. They want RB's that can catch the ball.

Well if his time in the NFL has shown anything, he sucks at it. Who knows for what reason. My money is on that the NFL nerves have gotten to his hands.
Don't forget, Vickers was considered a good recieving FB coming out of college and while he is considered a fantastic run blocker... he is known for dropping a ton of footballs.

LB yes. the other 2 positions THEY COULD HAVE upgraded tremendously in the draft and whiffed.

How is replacing 94 year old Sheldon Brown with Owens and McFadden not an upgrade?
Z
And how do whiff by trading a fourth round safety for a third round pick?

brown would have been cut regardless.
the fact that they had already addressed the LB/DE hybrid position in FA and then picked mingo instead of the number one CB is a whiff in my book. and then not use their 2nd of the best FS/SS was strike two.
we'll see how it plays out though. like i've said before have the best front 7 in the league with a mediocre secondary. and what's it take to beat a front 7? speed. well plenty of people have that.
too bad we didn't pick the fastest highest rated CB in the draft when he was sitting right there.

All I am going to say is that Horton has never really been known for building a defense around his secondary. He learned to set a defense up in Pittsburg. A strong front 7 and a close to the line blitzing/playmaking SS. He went to Arizona and honestly I would assume he was one person in the room who didn't want to spend such a high first round pick on a CB. Horton actually being in Arizona made Rodgers-Cromartie expendable as trade bait for Kolb.
Lets just compare defense with the Steelers for a second and see how we compare with them (not nessisarily saying who is better but just comparing how they are built).
Both have a heavy focus on their front seven. Steelers constantly draft front seven talent that falls to them that they can use in reserve/rotation roles for a year or two before making them full time starters. Browns just did this with Mingo.
CB 1 and 2. The Browns have Haden while the Steelers have Taylor as #1 guys. While this isn't a talent comparison, Haden is much better. Who are both teams #2 and nickle CBs? I don't know. Cortez Allen did decent in the nickle last year, but who knows if he can transition to the outside. Skrine is about as skilled in the slot as Allen, but has already shown that he doesn't have the skill set to really be an outside guy. Could McFadden be that outside guy? Who is the Steelers nickle CB? Does it really matter for them, cause even without name power at CB, or ever spending higher than a 3rd round pick for that matter, they manage to do well because of the front 7.
SS and FS. SS is a close to the line play maker. A hitter and blitzer first. This is what Polamalu has done for years when healthy. Ward has shown that he has this type of skill set and he excels at it. He won't ever cover as well as Polamalu used to, or pull down as many interceptions, but he is that play making safety Horton likes. FS? Gipson and Clark are very similar. Litterally the same size, same athetically, and both were undrafted guys. The only difference is that Clark got the chances to prove what he could do in the league. Even when he signed with the Steelers for his 5th season in the league, he was far from a sure thing starter and his 2nd season with them involved a very open competition for the starting job. Clark is far from an all pro, but he is a very solid starter and I think Gibson has a real shot of reaching his level of play.
-
yes, they are kings of defense. but since the browns are so young and have only a handful of glaring needs, can't they ever just complete a draft or FA period and finish the process on one side of the line?
to me the only glaring holes on the defense (after we signed FAs) was in the secondary. make that your first couple of picks.
i know the draft is a crap shoot and no one player is ever a guaranteed pro-bowler but lombardi better pray mingo doesn't turn out to be the next craig powell or courtney brown.

The only thing Benjamin and Austin have in common is Speed and being smaller, not even close to being the same type of football players tho.

Walker? Can't be the football player!? He's no good.
Oh, I know what Walker they signed ... the big, slow guy -- the Walker that the Empire used on the ice planet Hoth in the Star Wars movie "The Empire Strikes Back." Wow, doesn't need to be fast. Just pretty much sits back there and reaches out and knocks people down, or fires a stun gun at them if they get open down field.
Now I understand why Lombardi put almost no emphasis at all on upgrading the secondary! He's got the Walker! All makes sense now!

Sean Smith, now with KC, is not a top player, but would have helped right away and been OK as a #2 CB to Haden. He is a former second round draft choice, 6'3", 220 and yet ran the same Combine time as the diminutive Leon McFadden. Smith would have done well against bigger receivers and that will be a McFadden weakness.
Tavon Austin is going to be a great NFL player and will help turn the fortunes around for the Rams this season. He's a better version of Sean jackson of the Eagles and light years better than Travis Benjamin. He could have done the same for the Browns offense which has been among the worse in the league for many years. The Browns offense will still be fairly mundane in 2013. With Austin, the Browns offense would have gone to a higher level it hasn't seen since the glory days of the 80s and the Browns would have been in the top 10 in scoring in the NFL this coming season.
But, alas, neither Lombardi nor The Gipper havethe vision to see it all.

Uh, I said I make my decisions based, first and foremost, on what my eyes see. And what I saw of Hardesty in college was a really fine football player who, if he stayed healthy, could be a fine back in the pros. A guy named Heckert saw the same thing ....
Bacarri Rambo is a heck of an athlete -- a first team all america in 2011 -- and he will have a better pro career than Jamoris Slaughter.

Ask yourself that very question about 4 games into the 2013 season as the Browns lose game after game due to a weak secondary that has no quality depth. If one of the starters gets hurt, it's really a disaster, then! We saw that play out last season and will again.
As mentioned, Browns could have added FS Thomas from Fresno State and DB Webb from William & Mary, two highly regarded players, if they had kept the 4th and 5th round picks. Incredibly stupid decision by Lombardi who could have solved the Browns secondary problems for years, allowing the team to concentrate in the future on adding more quality on the offense at WR and QB or at inside linebacker.
Yes, Lombardi has his draft picks for 2014. But will the Browns 3rd round pick from the Steelers in 2014, if the they keep the pick, be really that much better than where they would pick i nthe 4th round? Some difference but not a lot of difference.
I am not confident that Lombardi will make good use of those extra picks in the 2014 draft.

Well, all I can say is that a guy named Shanahan drafted Rambo and last year he took a guy named Morris in the same draft slot as Rambo.
But, let me guess, Lombardi is better at evaluating talent than Shanahan, right? Mmmm, let's figure it out: Lombardi takes Slaughter, and Shanahan takes Rambo. Who will be right?

I'm confused, you think Lombardi is a rubbish talent evaluator, so you want him to use those two picks on people he thinks are good? Or are we just rehashing the draft again and again?
