If the Playoffs started today 11/15/16

The Browns Board
29 7 631
  • If the playoffs started today, here is who would be in:

AFCE Patriots 7-2 #1 seed (better conf. record than Chiefs)

AFCN Ravens 5-4 (misleading....2 wins vs. Browns)

    AFCS Texans 6-3

AFCW Chiefs 7-2 (win tie break over Raiders with better division record)

    Wildcards: Raiders 7-2, Broncos 7-3

    NFCE Cowboys 8-1 #1 seed

NFCN Lions 5-4 (win tie over Vikings, better conf. record)

    NFCS Falcons 6-4

    NFCW Seahawks 6-2-1

    Wildcards: Giants 6-3 Redskins 5-3-1

The "race" for the #1 overall draft pick:

    Browns 0-10

    49ers 1-8

    Bears 2-7

    Jags 2-7

    Jets 3-7

    Panthers 3-6

  • While each game could be important, the following are the only games scheduled this week between teams that would be in the playoffs now:

    Ravens at Cowboys

    Texans at Raiders.

  • Not surprisingly, the Browns have the worst point differential by a wide margin: -126

    49ers are next at -96

    Bears -74

    Cowboys at +88 are tops

    Pats are at +78

    Eagles are + 66

Surprisingly, despite being 6-3 the Giants are -2 in point differential

The Bills at 4-5 are however +34 in point differential

And the Chargers at 4-6 are still +14.

  • In the "race" for the #1pick, looks like the 49ers are going to give us some serious competition. Checked their schedule. This week? Patriots = loss, book it. Their only chances @ wins IMHO are Da Bears & Rams, and they're both on the road.

    They might beat the Bears.

But we have to win 2 to "lose" the race due to division strength of schedule.

Probably.. I just went over this in another thread.

Yeah- I just took a look at that Gip, and I'm worried. Only sure way to get that #1 overall is to lose out. 🙁

IIRC it's not "division SoS, it's overall SoS. OK, probably a little early to do the projection. But I did. First, throw out the 5 common opponents (Cowboys, Pats, ect.) Insert current records of teams yet to be played. Assume both the 49ers and the Browns both lose this week. Give the Browns a win somewhere down the road.

Browns have played the tougher schedule (by two more opponent wins to date). Pick second.

    Throwing out the non-common games.....

49ers finish with Falcons, Bears, Rams Seahawks. (49ers best chance at another win)

Browns finish with Giants, Bungles, Chargers, Steelers.

I'll call the Falcons\Giants games a wash as to record. In the race for the #1 overall, the Browns losing to both the Bungles and Steelers would be very bad. (Ups their win total)

So, in a nutshell, root for the Falcons and Seahawks to win, and everyone left on the Browns non-division schedule to lose.

Bump. In the race to #1. Darn, the Niners almost pulled it out against Miami. Here's the update. San Fran better beat the Bears- because it just got worse. In case of identical records, San Fran picks first. Their opponents have 54 wins, the Browns 60.

  • 49s also have the Jets at home week 14, their most winnable game. Did you double the wins of divisional opponents in that count?

But, the Niners have played one more game than the Browns. That is why.

This week we have the last two teams to take their byes I believe: Browns and Titans.

Not so Gip. The "projection" factors in the current records of teams the Browns & 49ers have yet to play. Of course, the assumption includes the Browns winning a game somewhere. Doesn't matter that much about the extra game the Browns have played.

Subject to change, every Atlanta, Arizona (man, they're sucking) & Seattle win helps the Browns. I'll update as needed.

  • 49s also have the Jets at home week 14, their most winnable game. Did you double the wins of divisional opponents in that count?

Yup, sure did. It hurts that the Cardinals and Rams are playing poorly. I expected better out of Arizona. I could see the Browns eking out a win against the beat up Bengals, or the Chargers- but both? Doubtful.

The game against the Bengals after the bye will be telling. both teams will have little to play for. The Browns will either come out fired up, or have mailed in the season.

I don't think so. You said that Browns opponents have won 60 games thus far, and the 49ers foes have 54 The Browns have played 12 opponents. the 49ers have played only 11 opponents.

So, perhaps we should look at it like this:

Average number of wins of Browns opponents: 5 60/12. Average number of wins by 49ers opponents: 4.909. So, yes, for now the 49ers would have a better run.....but they also have a stronger remaining schedule I believe.

  • But, it is true that the 49ers play an "easier" schedule the rest of the way.

The Browns remaining opponents: Steelers/Bengals/Bills/Chargers are 20-23-1 .465

    The 49ers remaining opponents: Falcons/Rams/Bears/Jets/Seahawks are 23-31-1 .426

So, for the Browns to get the #1 pick....of course all they have to do is lose the rest of the way....or at least lose fewer than the 49ers.

Or if they tie they must have a weaker SOS.....and we won't know that any time soon.

But....let's put it this way: the Bengals/Jets and Bears are looking about as bad as the Browns are looking at this point.

  • With our luck, RG3 will come back and we'll win 3 of the last 4, giving the FO false hope and changing their draft/FA strategy to build around the glass framed QB.

  • is there much difference between picking #1 overall vs. #2 overall? Is there a consensus player that we absolutely have to have at #1 that for sure will not be there at #2?

Have you not been paying attention on this Board: A Quarterback.

SF needs Garrett more than they need a QB.
