  • Johnny is still a boy, and until he grows into a man, he'll continue to make boyish decisions. Men need to be led by a man, and right now the kid isn't even close to being a leader, and hell, we haven't even talked about his lack of size, questionable arm strength, inability to read an NFL defense or inability to grasp the playbook.

Time will tell, and the clock is ticking..............

Even men make boyish decisions from time to time - see: Brady, Tom. The fact that this non-story has become a point of contention just shows the polarity of Manziel...and not in a good way. The level-headed among us realize that it's nothing, while the detractors are attempting to use this as another example of Manziel being "unworthy" to be a Browns QB (whatever that means) and the zealots are using this as a platform to voice how unfair Manziel's life is.

He's not going to sit in his room and study 24/7. To expect that is stupid - regardless of what any of us would supposedly do in that situation. (And I'm willing to bet that any single one of us would have gone to a large golf tournament in our spare time in our home state had we the money and the time off.) Manziel will go to events, he will live his life, and he will be photographed doing so. Those are the facts.

Getting heckled by a fan (while not drinking) at a golf tournament and throwing a water bottle are, in some ways, a sign of maturity for Manziel. Because this time last year he was passed out, face down on an inflatable swan in a Vegas pool.

The trolls and the blowhards can pissed off that he didn't offer the guy's child a free scholarship, then tip his hat and float away on a cloud of high-class good samaritan vibes. The ones of us who are actually realists can take solace in the fact that he's not as bad as he was at this point last year.

Based on the article I think the "fan" in this case was a "pushy ass douchebag". Only makes it even easier for JM to be the bigger person here. I'd think he'd want to diffuse the situation right off the bat.

From both the ESPN report and the NFL.com report, it seems like he did try to diffuse the situation multiple times.

"Police were in the area and asked Manziel's camp some questions about what had happened, the friend said. "There was no malicious intent. We separated the situation," said the friend, who spoke with the cops along with Manziel. "We told the cops, 'Will you please make sure there's distance between us?'"

Manziel was polite to the fan the first 10 times he sought a picture, telling him he was with his girlfriend and friends he hadn't seen in a while, the friend said. He didn't want to take hundreds of pictures with fans.

Eventually, the fan grabbed Manziel from behind and Manziel asked, "'Can you please not do that? Just please leave me alone,'" the friend said.

Manziel was with friends who were waiting on an Uber ride outside of the golf course when they encountered the fan again. Among the fan's insults to Manziel, the friend said, was "Ryan Tannehill is way better than you.""

I'm not sure what else Manziel was supposed to do. Sure, throwing a water bottle is certainly childish behavior, though I feel he gave the "fan" more than enough leeway. If it were me, it would have only taken half of those occurrences for me to knock the kid out cold.

That looks like a 2-4 year old picture from his College Station days so I guess you don't give a shit about his rehab attempt now. Nice way to support a Browns player.

Oh fuck off. Why are you even here? Johnny Manziel is a no talent ass clown. He's short, too slow to evade NFL DEs and LBs, his arm isn't as strong as he thinks it is, he's too stupid to read a defense, and he's too much of an alcoholic to ever be the leader of an NFL team. The guy was given every opportunity to succeed and he's blown it time and time again. The sooner this asshole goes back to Texas, the better.

Been spending too much time watching the Cavs- but- I think you're being a tad harsh on JFF. He's got this year to prove he belongs.

So going to sporting events is how athletes say "I'm relevant!" Going out in public is a cry for attention. Not being chauffeured directly from the practice field to his house is him being immature.

The hot takes from the Browns Board.

You want the guy to live in a cave? Haden goes to Cavs games, so does Joe Thomas. If he wants to spend a weekend at a golf tournament during the off season, (Johnny loves golf) I have no problem with that.

Not how a starting NFL QB should act ... but then again, Johnny is not a starting NFL QB.

Reading the latest reports, guy was majorly screwing with him.

I wonder if the thought ever occurred to Manziel to just give the little douchebag an autograph when he first asked for it. But who knows how he was "asked". If the kid was polite about it that's one thing, but if he said some stupid shit which I suspect he did, that's another. Either way it shouldn't have taken two hours to resolve. Something is wrong with that picture.

You don't HAVE to give out autographs, or let the guy pose for a selfie with you. I believe Le Bron frequently doesn't. However- Manziel probably should have just left the area before it got to the bottle throwing stage. I do sort of understand the mentality. Hey, I play in the NFL, and you're a 18 year old nobody jackass.

The "hotel" is the nerve center of that Golf Tournament.

We have a preference for those that actually play.

Yes, he was... but our uber competitive, 22 yo QB apprentice couldn't resist trying to outdo him.

As pointed out above, sign the frickin' autograph, thank the fan and enjoy your pool time.

Why is the onus on Johnny to sign the autograph? If a guy doesn't want to sign the autograph, the fan should respect that and leave.

If Haden had refused and this whole schpiel had occurred, I'm willing to bet every single person in here would have been on the "this fan was a pushy ass douchebag" train.

I found myself asking this same question - however I realize this.... its an EXTREME privilege to be able to play in the NFL. Couple that with a quality athlete and more important a quality person - should be able to humble themselves at all times, be the better man and (even if they aren't willing) grit your teeth for a signing or two. If it was 50 people lining up, mobbing the guy I'd be able to understand. If it was one fucking kid, sign it, shake his hand and say you're looking to get some R&R in.

edit: The Haden comparison is rubbish because Joe, from my experience, takes serious time out for the fans and we love him for it.

  • baloney. He has never sunk so low that he was a rapistbooger. Or a girlfriend beater.

Let's just see if he can get his career back on track.

I really wanted Garoppolo - he was in my mock drafts...

Hard to depend on JM this coming year ...need a third qb on the roster.

This would be one of my concerns....that we lose a roster spot to carry 3 QB's

Pettine made it pretty clear(last year) that he doesnt want or need 3 QB's on the roster...so it would suck having to lose a solid player at another position simply because we dont trust our back up QB(s)(who ever they end up being)

  • Well I can guarantee you two things and that is that both former Texas born legends Sammy Baugh and Bobby Layne would have cleaned this kids clock by the second unwanted interruption.

Browns fans who continue to make something out of this situation just have no clue. Be happy it was a water bottle and that otherwise JM has obviously understood he needed to make major changes, which so far he has done. Start backing up your player for his attempts to be your "committed" QB. If you can't see that 10 attempts to explain things to this turd was way over the limit, then your hatred is just getting in the way of your common sense.

  • No one would give a shit about this situation if Johnny didn't have a history of having a self-created circus around him. Didn't he already have an issue with someone in his posse thumping a fan in a hotel lobby?

  • maybe someone smart from his camp, hmmm maybe his agent might say to him "you know what johnny. this thing with you going out and interacting with people isn't going so well right now. why don't you lay low until say, you make the team?"

The fan issued a public apology after the fact and took all of the blame for attempting to agitate Johnny.

Once again, a situation where - had Johnny not been Johnny - nobody would be talking about it whatsoever. The "circus" isn't self-created. it's wholly driven by the media. There was an interesting take on this today by Pat McManoman (http://espn.go.com/blog/cleveland-browns/post/_/id/13996/does-johnny-manziels-belong-to-all-of-us).

Basically, what he's wondering is what we've talked about on here before - at what point does the media make his life a self-fulfilling prophecy?

I used to be a hot-headed fighter. I used to think of myself as some sort of Robin Hood when it came to drunk people, idiots and assholes. if someone was showing their ass, I'd punch them in face just to show I was bigger and better than them. I've punched more than one friend in the face on more than one occasion. But, once I hit a certain age, I realized that was just stupid peacocking behavior from a young kid with ego problems. I haven't been in a fight in two years, I've been very studious about working off any pent-up aggression, I take care to rationally talk through any issues I have with drunk friends or I just remove myself from the situation. I have dedicated time and brainpower to doing something that most people just do naturally.

However, my friends, knowing my past, still antagonize me from time to time just to see if they can. They poke and prod because, to them, it's funny to see me get riled up. It's the same with Johnny now. Regardless of what he was...he's making a conscious effort to change - but the media (and society as a whole) aren't willing to forget. A mature Johnny who calmly removed himself from the situation and spoke to the authorities doesn't sell papers. So they'll take the one aspect they can and spin it out of control. It doesn't matter that the police and bystanders have both commented on the fact that he handled it maturely, it doesn't matter that he was at a weekend event where alcohol was bountiful, yet wasn't drinking at all - he threw a water bottle so he's clearly "same old Johnny".

No, I'm not pissed because he's a "complete flop". Nor did I double talk. Throwing a water bottle was childish...and it was still a sign of maturity compared to what he was doing last year. An action can be two things at once. The fact that you can't comprehend that doesn't make my post less valid, it just further reinforces the fact that you have poor comprehension when it comes to Johnny Manziel.

Manziel DID walk away. Manziel DID have security step in. And the kid continued to be a pestering dick, then made a backhanded comment about losing his job to Shaw - at which point Manziel then threw a water bottle. Once again, your comprehension is lacking in this matter.

I know that it would have been a poor decision. That's the point I'm reinforcing...I'm a similar-aged person with my head seemingly on my shoulders. I've had no run-ins with the law (knock on wood), I've never done drugs, I rarely drink and for all intents and purposes I'm a somewhat of a wholesome individual for my age. Yet I still would have knocked the guy out...because I don't have the restraint to continue to deal with idiots for extended periods of time. The fact that I'm still posting here is crazy.

We're chastising a guy for a relatively mild reaction to a IRL troll. I've seen guys in here challenge fisticuffs for much, much less. And we're supposed to be better and more mature than Manziel?

  • I think thats a pretty fair statement overall.......we can all agree that Johnny has caused much of his trouble....BUT the media is magnifying it and pouncing every chance they get(and there are a LOT of opportunities, unfortunately).....and he seems to attract a lot of idiots, like this kid he encountered at the tourney....or the guy in the lobby who got punched......or the fans at the bar who poured drinks on him.....so, if not for the idiots and prying media, most of this stuff would just fly under the radar.....and if Johnny actually played good, then we should all admit we would be more accepting of his antics....

For me.....it's not really about "blame" or whos fault this all is.........no, it's about all this shit being brought to the Browns(no matter WHO is the initial cause).....thats all....I dont hate Johnny, I just hate the shit that swirls around him...(and no matter whether you think it's his fault or not....it's there and it's not good for the team)

And the only 2 solutions to make it stop are either he learns to handle it properly AND plays great....or he goes away.....

Until then....he needs to figure out that he is a HUGE target and have a better plan about how he's gonna handle "things" when they crop up....as they seem to do so frequently.....

I think it's one of those things that we're going to have to deal with until he either plays better or he leaves. There's no way around it. We drafted him knowing full well what the media circus entailing him would be like, regardless of how he acted.

If Manziel had done absolutely nothing and left the event, we would have seen "Manziel Accosted By Inebriated Fan; Leaves PGA Tourney Event" - because that's going to have a high clickthrough rate and is a shareable news item.

So, like you said...either he plays better or he leaves. But I don't think it's fair to assume the media storm will die down if Manziel simply becomes a wet noodle and does nothing. The media will make a story out of nothing.

  • What's his side of the story?

I highly doubt he will make a statement...he hasn't addressed the media since he went to rehab.....nor has he addressed his teammates since his return....so, everyone is in the dark about Johnny's views on all this stuff ......but, Im sure his "side" is that the other guy was a relentless asshole....which Im sure he was.....

The Browns will probably keep him as hidden as possible and it's no accident that he's about the only Browns not to talk to the media this week.....

but I dont blame him for not talking to the media.....why feed the vultures who only want to see you fail???........though I do think, with all the distractions and the fact that QB is a leadership position. that he should have started on the right foot with the team by coming clean to them and getting an understanding so they ALL can move forward together......I mean, if he's supposed to be leading these guys into battle, then leaving them in the dark and with unanswered questions doesnt seem like a good start......

I agree again.....and, yes, we knew this was coming when we picked him.....but you also have to accept that a lot of people saw this media circus coming and weren't all too pleased then.....so for many its just the tenth "i told ya so" moment....

And in re to your comment above...Im sure it would've been news....but I d rather read that the fan was the one acting dumb, not both....."Leaves PGA Tournament" would have been a very solid, professional, mature end to that situation......which is pretty much the whole point....

  • The bottom line is, if Johnny can't beat out McCown this year, then we are all kind of screwed. It means their 1st round gamble isn't good enough to beat out a career backup, journeyman at best QB, in a day and age where 1st round QBs start from day 1, and 3rd round QBs win Super Bowls. So for the future of the Browns, I hope he is what all his boys say he is.
