JM excerpt from a really good ESPN write-up of Haslam interview:

    http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/13359708/jimmy-haslam-says-cleveland-browns-not-blow-things-2015-losing-season

"I think we're pleased that Johnny did the things he should do in the offseason," Haslam said. "It was a great improvement over his first year, but anything less would have been totally unacceptable. So he's working hard.

"But playing pro football, you have to be a pro, particularly playing the position he does. So he's got to work hard every day on and off the field. He's making progress, but he's got a long way to go. But we're obviously pleased with the offseason."

Haslam would not, though, say the team has to know what it has in Manziel by the end of this season.

"He's barely 22 years old," Haslam said. "He's still young. So I think over the next couple of years we've got to see if Johnny can be a legitimate quarterback or not.

"I don't want to put too much pressure on him or our coaches and say it has to happen this year."

Gonna beat the dead horse on this one but why invite the circus and waste a first round pick to "see if Johnny can be a legitimate quarterback or not.". Don't the Browns have more pressing needs? Haslam seems like an owner that likes to meddle but has no clue.

actually liked what haslam had to say, especially the line "I don't want to put too much pressure on him or our coaches and say it has to happen this year." which tells me he doesn't have that trigger finger like a lot of owners have.

seems like he'll give pettine and farmer some time, which is what this team needs.

Start rooting for your real team 'Baaston".

Agree-I'd rather see a QB developed rather than thrown in the deep end with a sink or swim sign around his neck. Cleveland has done that far too often to continue repeating that mistake. As long as the coaching staff is happy with how he comes along, that is all that should matter.

Nah- pretty sure the circus left town after JF stunk it up last year. He still draws above average interest- but not much more than say Gino Smith.

Boston didn't embrace the New England Patriots when they got blown out in a Superbowl and stunk for 10 years during the mid 80s-90s. In my book they can't claim they now.

Id agree.....not nearly the distraction we had last year.....

He's really just another player now, which is how it should be.....if he blows up, then so will the media and THEN it will be well earned and for all the right reasons.....

So far, Im enjoying this years camp and post draft season sooooooooooooooooooooooooo much more than I did last year....🙂

I read around today that he did a lot of of work out of the shotgun today and looked noticeably better than previous days in camp. Was camp open today did anyone see the QB's work?

I clicked on the link, scrolled down a bit, and my eyes were immediately drawn to "Johnny Manziel is the Browns' best hope". I was instantly overcome by grief and sadness, which quickly turned into nausea.

So yea, it's fair to say I disagree.

Well if you had heard Kevin Gilbride on NFL Network this morning then you would have been hospitalized. He said that at some point the O under McCown will bog down to the point that they will have to bring in JF as the starter "to provide a spark". He apparently agrees with this article that it's just not going to be workable with McCown as QB.

I had to check the post date on this. Sounds like last season.

JM "sparked" the Browns right out off playoff contention last season.

Sounds like Haslam is laying the pipeline out that its ok for now if JM falls behind Shaw for the backup? Preseason game time will determine a bunch.

And if they demote him to 3rd string after all the steps he has taken then they lose him forever. He'll ask for a trade or release.

Every kid doesn't get a trophy.

Conner Shaw has credentials of his owm so if he plays better so be it. Owner speaks of being patient with JM and you're talking about him taking his ball and going home.

  • Tour2maT Tour2ma wrote on last edited by

And if he's dropped to 3rd string, then no Browns fan will care...

I don't think there is anything calculated in Haslam's JM statement. I think it is simply an owner reflecting what his brain trust (not his brain) is telling him. And that seems to be that while not ready, he still has a shot.

Why would any other team be bothered to trade for him if he can't crack the top 2 QB spots on a team starved for QB talent? That isn't even considering the off the field nonsense from last season.
