Hall of Fame Quarterbacks do not grow on trees

The Browns Board
15 8 443 1
  • The drafting of a Hall of Fame QB is NOT by any means a common occurrence.   It actually, I believe, happens rarer than one might think.  I believe that, on average, there may be only one drafted like every 3 years.  Let's look at when they have been taken since the draft started in 1936:

    1937  Sammy Baugh

    1939 Sid Luckman

1944 Otto Graham and Bob Waterfield

1949 George Blanda and Norm Van Brocklin

    1955 Johnny Unitas

1957 Len Dawson and Sonny Jurgenson

    1961 Fran Tarkenton

    1964 Roger Staubach

    1967 Bob Griese

    1968 Ken Stabler

    1970 Terry Bradshaw

    1973 Dan Fouts

    1979 Joe Montana

    1983 Elway, Marino, Kelly

    1989 Troy Aikman

1991 Brett Favre..... He was the last QB drafted in the regular draft to make the HOF

(note....somewhere in there Steve Young was taken in the Supplemental draft)

So...in a 56 year time span  only 21 (22 incl. Young)   HOFs QBs  came about.

After 1991, the next HOF QBs will be:

    1998 Payton Manning

    2000 Tom Brady

    2001 Drew Brees

2004....possibles/probables  Eli Manning, Ben R. Phillip Rivers.

    2005  Aaron Rodgers

After Rodgers....can it be said that any other QB is a sure fire HOFer at QB?

The best bet in my mind is Russell Wilson.   Others?  Newton?  Luck.

Point is, hopefully Mayfield will be one of those very rare finds that could one day be considered in that vein

  • Nyet to Camshaft. Luck needs to win a Super Bowl and stay healthy. The QB class of 2018 might turn out like the Class of 1983 ( of course way early to tell). LOL, we may have to live to be 100 to find out. 🙂

Remember 1999?  It was going to be the next 1983......but it wasn't.   1-2 good ones...not quite HOF....and 3 meh?

  • Cam is too much of a diva dip shit and is uncoachible.. Personally... I can't stand him... Hes a whiney little bitch who deserves NOTHING!

Do you think he will be one of those borderline guys even (notwithstanding your prejudice against him)?

    Who else is borderline?

McNabb?     Bledsoe?    Testaverde?   Carson Palmer?   McNair?

    What about Matt Ryan?

Per PFR....being drafted in 2008, he has actually had more career production than both Ben R. and Eli.....and almost as much as Rodgers and Rivers. Did blowing that big lead in the SB really drastically change our perception of him?

He will always live in the shadow of Big Brother Gip- that's what will kill his HOF credentials....

You mean Eli?   Eli is still healthy.....and could reach his brothers career numbers  if he continues to play.

True. The toughest most important piece in all of team sports is an NFL franchise quarterback.

Hard to believe that class of 1983 was 35 years ago, I was a spry 33 year old then.  😮

He won't. And he needs at least 4 more top years, and my bet is he won't stay healty either. Payton 72,000 yards, Eli 55,000. Payton 539 TDs, Eli 357, QBR Payton 96, Eli 84.  If it wasn't for the all time miracle catch in the Super Bowl, he'd be one short there too.

I guess I didn’t realize he was that far behind in yards and touchdowns.

  • Big ben and eli manning are lock 1st ballot hall of Fame guys. Theres no maybe about that.

Newton will be really interesting. His career stats assuming hes got 4-5 more years will be unlike any other QB in a good way. He wont get in 1st ballot but we shall see.

  • When you realize that you’ve finally hit the lottery. . .
