Guardians get permission to interview  Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell

    Cleveland Guardians vs. Milwaukee Brewers
The Guardians have received permission to interview Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell.     By    Paul Hoynes, cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Managers like options and Craig Counsell has plenty of them regarding where he’ll be working next season.

Counsell could return to Milwaukee, where he has led the Brewers to the postseason five times in the last six years.

More Guardians coverage ..... yes even more -->

He could join David Stearns, former president of the Brewers, who is now the top baseball executive of the Mets.

Or he could replace Terry Francona as manager of the Guardians. Cleveland has received permission to interview Counsell. Francona stepped down from the Guardians’ managerial position at the end of this season as the winningest manager in Cleveland history.   |--> continued -->

    |--> continued -->  He could also be a candidate to fill managerial vacancies with the Angels, Padres and Astros.

The Guardians have interviewed several candidates. After starting with a list of 45-48 names, they have narrowed the list considerably. In some cases they’ve already interviewed candidates twice, such as Stephen Vogt, Seattle’s bullpen and quality control coach.

With Bob Melvin going from the Padres to the Giants, Counsell, 53, is the big fish in the managerial pool. He’s replaced Ron Roenicke as Milwaukee’s manager in 2015, compiling a 707-625 record with three NL Central championships.

The Mets had the biggest payroll in history last season at $331 million, but flamed out. Veteran manager Buck Showalter was fired as the Mets went 75-87, a year after winning 101 games.

Mets owner Steven Cohen hired Stearns to get the Mets back on track, and Stearns has a strong link to Counsell.

If you’re the Guardians, that is a tough link to break. While Milwaukee and Cleveland are similar markets, the Brewers have outspent Cleveland by a wide margin over the last three years on their 26-man rosters. Here’s the comparison:

    • 2023: Guardians $89 million, Brewers $119 million.
    • 2022: Guardians $68 million, Brewers $132 million.
    • 2021: Guardians $49 million, Brewers $99 million.

That could discourage Counsell from coming to Cleveland, but the Guardians were able to make Francona one of the highest paid managers in the game. From a competitive point of view, the AL Central, much like the NL Central, gives a cleaner path to the postseason than the NL East, where the Braves and Phillies reside.

If Counsell takes the job in Cleveland, he would inherit one of the least threatening offenses in the big leagues. On the other hand, few organizations can rival the Guards when it comes to developing pitchers, particularly starters.

Counsell played 16 years in the big leagues. In 1997, he helped the Marlins beat Cleveland in Game 7 of the World Series.

Other candidates linked to Cleveland’s managerial search are Andy Green, Clay McCullough, Carlos Mendoza, Vogt, Craig Albernaz, John McDonald and Chris Valaika.

~        This is the most interesting part and should go down rapidly as other  MLB  positions fill.

October 27, 2023. -  Another important consideration on Cleveland landing  Counsell .... Spending ! :

I'd guess this will wrap up by the end of the World Series, or right after?

Good estimate, once the most desirables go then it should go quicky afterward.

I had to look it up

97 WS Game 7 Craig Counsell hit a 9th inning sac fly - (nearly a walkoff homer) off Mesa  to tie the game

in what became the WTF moment of the ages for the tribe and yours truly

He seems like a guy to have - maybe we do get him?

He seems like a pretty desirable candidate by several teams.   I'm sure the Cleveland FO baseball brain trust has a good grip on things .......  I would love to know about what they talk about .....    " behind closed doors "   .....   I bet it would be very interesting.

Counsell leaves the Brewers and goes all of a hour and a half south to the rival Cubs.

    That should be interesting.
