People Complaining About The Browns Offense Should Watch the Jets...

I don’t know if it is a Daboll problem. And He has enough Godwill from last year - that was a major overachievement…thanks to some savvy one score wins.
They’ve had a lot of injuries not just with Saquon and Dimes. Overall, It is not a very good roster…the Jets are IMO more talented and probably by a good margin too.
True; and I think Daboll was a great offensive coach in Buffalo to warrant appreciation with what he did for the Giants last year as a rookie Head Coach. Some markets are a little more patient and fair than the New York/New Jersey and Philly (just a softball throw away). The Giants barometer of building a program isn't make the playoffs (and even win a wild card game) only to be followed by a flatline the next year. I don't remember Tom Coughlin or Bill Parcells excusing losing with injuries and they both won more than 1 Super Bowl there. In fact, the Giants beat Buffalo in the Super Bowl with back-up QB Jeff Hostetler starting the game because Phil Simms was injured. Philly made the playoffs all the time with Andy Reid and lost in the only Super Bowl they appeared in with him. None of that excited the majority of their fan base any more than Santa Claus did. That competitive division is the world Daboll resides in right now so 1 quick honeymoon won't define the loyalty/patience of the fanbase and ownership in a world of what have you done for me lately. They won't fire him this year; but if next year looks just like this - they'll be very tempted to do so.
Matt Nagy was Coach of the Year with the Bears and made the playoffs twice early on. He was a bounce off the upright on a FG attempt away from winning a playoff game with Mitch Trubisky at QB. After that, he lost 4 straight years with a franchise/ownership that was way more patient than their fanbase wanted them to be.
Back to my purpose for this thread, Stefanski isn't hiding behind excuses (like the QB situation the last 2 years). The Browns are 5-3 in spite of it. Like Schwartz looked us in the eye during his 1st press conference "Coach Stefanski is the reason I'm here." Other injuries? Conklin is one of the best Right Tackles in the league when healthy; and there's a rookie replacing him more efficiently with every start. Nick Chubb? ESPN scrolled that the Browns running game was averaging 177 yards a game to rank #1 over a 3 game stretch heading into last Sunday. Last year, our offense averaged about 28 points a game with Brissett starting. The problem was the FO blew off the IDL/DT positions to stop anyone from running 5 Ks with the football between the tackles on our D. To get Schwartz to be interested we all know he had to be assured the FO would do an aggressive overhaul on the DL. All this nonsense that he's a sissy when he goes for it on 4th down as often as he does is absurd. Granted, there's times we wished he's made better decision on the play choice.

I don’t like that he gets too cute with the play calls in some of those situations. Last year, 4th and 1 (I think Miami or Baltimore) and he throws 40 yard pass with a backup QB that’s broken up. Or this year…1st in goal with a 3rd string QB he’s throwing in the end zone first three plays - instead of turning and handing off to one of the best short yardage backs in the game. Then the Seattle game. We need a big play put the ball in the hands of the guy best suited to make the play care more about that than trying to fool the other team or trying to show your play call prowess. Lots of focus there but let’s not forget some of other guys we’ve seen in different Browns schemes now because The holdovers are playing well. Jordan Elliot made no plays was one of the worst DL last year maybe the previous year too…he’s a solid rotational piece making splash plays when they are presented. The secondary looks comfortable more when they play man and they aren’t trying to communicate with each other in zone coverage. It is a talented group that’s also played together in two different regimes with different results.
I don’t have the advanced metrics in front of me. It seems to me we are around the ball and with the exception of the big plays given up against Indy we are limiting YAC big time. Less buffoonery.
Most notably our LBs are flying up and making tackles in the flats or breaking up passes there. JOK is thriving, Taki is playing smart football, Anthony Walker is healthy and playing impactful football. The argument I hear is there aren’t bodies on them and this is notable in the run game. Although I saw times last year they were untouched no impediment to the ball and they were MIA not making plays.
Most importantly our superstar is playing at the highest level he’s ever played. If I’m leading this group I would spend days/weeks finding ways to deploy this chess piece….it shows that this defensive regime is mindful of this and doing just that. Jim Schwartz was a much needed breath of fresh of air. You could tell He did his homework on our personnel.

Concerning Stef.. It's the chicken or the egg first analogy... We love it when it works.. We hate it when it does not.. And we second guess everything asking.. "Which is it" I know it is always easy to say.. "We should've done this" Sometime you just have to man up and say .. "That defense was good and out smarted us" Then move forward and live for the next play... It's the opposing defenses job to stop what you do and vice versa.... There's no free ride to victory... Even 2nd and 3rd stringers are good football players and better equipped than just any common man off the street.... (Vince Papali) was an anomaly.... Or they could just get any Joe blow bag of doughnuts off the street... I think these people that make it to the NFL are pretty special individuals talent wise or they wouldn't be selected in the first place...... While I get a lot of it is coaching.. At some point when do players bear the responsibility for failure to execute a given play...

When it is time to make a play We need to beat people over the head with our strengths. Watching games around league we have some areas/players that are elite with some skill sets.
We are great short yardage team running the ball inside. We got maulers/technicians inside and a hammer running the ball. 3rd and 4th and short should be advantage Browns almost every time.
With our 230M QB back…
We have a WR with elite route running skills. 3rd and medium or long reach into the bag and find that play call designed to go to him.
We have an elite catch radius Redzone TE. Find him.
Looks like we have the some fleet footed lineman and patient backs with good vision and hands to make the screen game work. We are deploying this often now(finally)- this is great.

I don't know how many times I've said if we have the ball from the 5 on in with a first down, give it to Hunt every play with a big man behind him just in case there is no crack. The man smells goal lines like nobody else. That's why I call him moneyman.

I don’t have a problem with Stef being aggressive and going for it in our own territory or going for TDs near the goalline and passing up FGs. From the posts in here, I think it’s kind of 50/50 is support of that.
I don’t like that he gets too cute with the play calls in some of those situations. Last year, 4th and 1 (I think Miami or Baltimore) and he throws 40 yard pass with a backup QB that’s broken up. Well said! I get the nails on a chalkboard feeling every time I see a our backup QBs with an empty backfield. If Woody Hayes ever had an OC do that - that Coordinator wouldn't have finished the game employed. Like you said "know your personnel." And those passes with goal to goal inside the 5 yard line baffle me when the running game is our spine. It's STILL what and who we are on offense.

You sure can tell. That's why they added Harris, Tomlinson, Hurst, Hill and drafted Ika just on the interior alone. End result? All of our starting LBers are still starting - when last year at this time they were on IR. Everybody knows their uncomplicated assignments so they can play fast and/or get there first. Fun to watch!
YES CLEVELAND - THERE IS A SANTA CLAUS!

When I lived in a frat house back in BC (Before Cellphones) - we had 1 REALLY miserable guy that looked like Bonanza's Hoss Cartwright. Anyway, whenever someone had a lousy day - they'd go talk to him to realize just how possible it was to have a day 10 times worse. In some outrageous way, this guy would leave people feeling like their day wasn't so bad at all. For old times sake, Thanks Andy!
The point of all that, starting with their much anticipated opener, the pass pro the Jets had in store for Aaron Rodgers had him on a collision course for more broken bones than Evel Knieval. After a 26 yard run by Breece Hall, Rodgers faced enormous pressure on his 1st 3 pass attempts of the season. Of course the 3rd time he tore his Achilles Tendon and went on IR.
Since then, I've tried watching them since I have Garrett Wilson on my fantasy football team. Anyone complaining about the Browns Offense should watch how the Jets railroaded their passing game into asking Zach Wilson into pretending he's a immobile but cerebral QB like Bernie Kosar. They don't even TRY to run the ball with backs like Breece Hall and Dalvin Cook. As good of a Coach as Robert Saleh can be - the fans of that franchise only see an offensive train-wreck. I understand they have injuries up front; but an experienced OC should be able to adapt to the situation. The last game they played looked like an offensive forfeit all night.
I think there's recent gossip that Aaron Rodgers might have a chance to return; but nothing has changed since his very 1st series that planted him on IR. Having said that, Rodgers will probably have a lot of input in what they will be doing if he does come back.
The only time I've seen the Browns offense look almost that bad was against the Rats. This week against the Rats, I hope they stay patient and persistent trying to run the ball. When they are successful with that - the passing game will be easier. They have to be patient on offense and ready to secure the football on every play; because that team gang tackles and jars the football loose. The fundamental of securing the football needs to be practiced daily in lieu of just saying "we can't turn it over." If the Browns do those things - I like their chances to Rathouse Baltimore.

Our passing offense is actually pretty close to the basement side by side with the jets, we just have at least some semblance of a rushing offense and a top defense.

Jets D actually did pretty well against the Chargers holding Herbert and Ekeler to just over 200 yds total with only 2 1 & 2 yd TDs by Ekeler and none for Herbert.

...and yet, when they were playing the Chargers a few nights ago we had to root against the Jets because they only had 3 losses....just like us.
True. The main point of the thread per the carefully specified title is there's actually an NFL offense for a team with playoff hopes with way more reasons to complain about their offense - than the bellyaching from our fans about the Browns offense (me included when I see empty backfields). On a good night for the Jets, they handed Philly their only loss. Having said that, on a night they faced what had been a very underachieving defense for the Chargers prior to MNF- they gave up 8 sacks in a game plan that showed their backup QB had 49 pass attempts. When you have a RB like Breece Hall; and your OC is choosing to lean more heavily on a QB that just can't see the field as quickly as the speed of the game requires him to - the fans and media are going to complain about it. That was the reason I brought it up for a comparison sake after listening to all of the negativity here about the offensive coordination when the Browns had a backup QB starting. Just a reminder, it can always be worse elsewhere. For example, the projected starting QB for the Jets is still on IR while Watson has returned to the starting lineup.
The Jets game against the Chargers looked a lot like the Browns with a backup rookie QB against the Ratbirds. The Browns Defense started off pretty good in their first few series that day. However the turnovers and lack of time of possession from their offense took the wind right out their sails/lungs the rest of the game.
In all the excitement and commitment the Jets had for Rodgers and the Browns had for Watson - what fell through the cracks was the "what if he gets injured?" We had Dobbs here last year and in training camp this year. The disappointment I see is he had an understanding of the offense that would have had him so much more mentally prepared for an emergency fill-in situation. And the Jets? They're back to starting the young QB that doesn't have a quick enough processor to give them a reliable passing game consistently enough for a balanced attack. At least the Browns have moved the ball enough to give their defense a rest and the fresh legs it needs to compete all game (except for that 1st Ratbird game).

Agreed! They also sacked Herbert 5 times while the Jets offense continued to forfeit the game. When the Jets gave up a punt return for a TD - that didn't help either.

I have stated in the past Robert Saleh puts together some great defenses I think he uses his personnel pretty damn good..... I'm just still not sold on him as the HC of any given team...

I can't imagine being a Jets fan and being subjected to having to have Zach Wilson be your starting QB, then to get Aaron Rodgers in the offseason to only have him blow his Achilles IMMEDIATELY and having to endure more Zach Wilson starting QB time.
That has to test your faith in a higher power.

Yeah, that wouldn't be too fun. Dutch, not that there's anything wrong with this - but am I to blame for the length of your sentences all of a sudden? If my old English teacher ever saw some of my crap in here - she'd be threatening summer school all over again.

...you ought to be able to imagine that pretty well. We've suffered with that kind of stuff all century.

It's like I'm allergic to punctuation lately! How about this, I'll start writing everything like nickers does... How would you... like that.... Flugels... would that....rock your.... proverbial boat?

I'm literally writing that and thinking "Who am I kidding, I'm a Browns fan. I know EXACTLY how that feels!" ?

You might get a charge out this then. In 4th grade we had to write essays/compositions and hand them in on Thursdays. On Fridays our teacher (Mr Ruppersberger) would read his 3 most entertaining essays for the week. One week I wrote about my dream game for the Ohio State Buckeyes against The School Up North. I was certain that wouldn't make his top 3.
Guess what? It made the top 3. So when he started reading it, he accelerated his tempo, lost his breath and finished at warped speed. So then he asked me in front of everyone "Tom why do you think I read through that so quickly?" Like any 10 year old, I replied with what I was thinking in the following question-like tone: "because Cornelius Green and Archie Griffin are really fast?" He laughed and said "No, do you realize your entire composition was just 1 sentence long without 1 period or punctuation mark?"
The sad thing is I haven't improved very much. If I connect 2 sentences with a semi colon get ready for a 3rd sentence with fake punctuation in the form of -. We got it covered Dutch. I just don't want your mom calling me with "my son used to be brilliant before he started interacting with knuckleheads like you Flugel." Then I'll pull out some back pocket charm and remind her how smart she is for liking Taki Taki. I might need you to remind what the best pizza places are in your area again.
