After seeing what they did to Kavanaugh, I don't think that accusations being thrown around by the side who doesn't want him confirmed should be taken at face value. Add to that, his ex-wife (who's at the center of a lot of the accusations) publicly stated that NBC's info about their marriage was incorrect and she would be lawyering up over what they'd claimed. I don't know why they got divorced, and I don't care because it's not relevant to his job. If his alcohol use ever got him into serious trouble while he was in the military, why wasn't there any official documentation for it? No demotion? No record of punitive action? If it was as big an issue as his opponents were saying it was, there would have been more to it than "your coworker said you did this 20 years ago..."
That's a positive for me, personally. Tenure =/= merit. Lloyd Austin, Mark Esper, James Mattis, Ashton Carter, and Robert Gates were all overwhelmingly voted for during their confirmation hearings. All of them except Gates had a higher rank than Hegseth when they left the service, but did that translate to them doing a good job? No, not in my opinion.
No, I have concrete reasons for liking him.
- He has military leadership experience, but did not climb high enough up the ladder for politics to be more important than competence - this starts coming into play once they get up around the colonel rank.
- He did not spend any time on the board of Raytheon, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, etc
- Hundreds of guys who served in combat under him all went to bat for him when these accusations came out. I don't think that many would have done so if he was a shitty leader (of which, the military has plenty). I take that into much higher consideration than what his ex-wife's sister claims about their failed marriage.
- My view is that the ethnic/sexual/gender diversity of the military is absolutely irrelevant to its efficacy as a fighting force. He agrees.
- His priority is military lethality and deterrence. Lloyd Austin absolutely failed in this regard, and hot conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine were the result. The Gazan/Russian response to Biden versus Trump makes it crystal clear to me that no one respected Biden nor the leadership he placed in charge of what should be the most powerful military force in the world.

I actually like that Trump is picking people with experience in television. To be successful in live television, you have to work well under pressure and be an effective communicator. PBS is reporting that military enlistment has surged, and as of two weeks ago, was the highest it's been in 8 years. Anecdotally, I know a few kids who enlisted because of the changes Hegseth said he would make when he was announced as Trump's pick.
- I think this last point is really important. If he didn't have that experience, I don't think he makes it through the confirmation hearing. I think that Tulsi, RFK, and Kash will struggle more than Hegseth in their attempts to get through the senate.
You have established that you have concerns with his character and his lack of experience. What specific aspects of his job will he do poorly because of those issues?
Kinda hard to go "but Kavanaugh!" (we can't trust what they're saying) And then go "well the military never said anything, so it must be fine." Because our own military has never covered up any awful activities within it's own ranks, right?
There were much more recent allegations than 20 years ago. Plenty of allegations from his time at Fox. Shit, his own mom wrote that letter 6 years ago.
If you're taking the stance that all of those allegations are lies and they're just made up by Dems to attack Hegseth, than so be it. I won't convince you otherwise. I think that's a very head in the sand response, but it's not anything I'll be able to add to that'll change your mind either way.
So your stance is that more tenure, increased responsibility, and higher levels of leadership in the government and / or military don't help you perform better as the highest military governmental official. Alright... Again, seems like an insane stance. One against almost how every single role / occupation in the world hires. But alright
And further responses
- politics (office or otherwise) affects every leadership role in every organization in existence. You said he only got to a level where competence mattered more. You could just as easily argue he didn't get any higher due to a lack of competence.
- alright
- his boys supported him... Definitely unheard qualifications there
- he wants to remove women from combat roles, even if qualified. They've already banned transgendered folks. Doesn't sound like "irrelevant" to me. Sounds like "fit in a certain bucket". The military has enough recruitment issues and his views on sex, sexual orientation, etc are turning people away.
- so he believes in something you believe ... Not sure how that speaks to his qualifications
- really? TV presence? That's what we're scraping for here as "qualifications"? Crazy to think no one in high military or government leadership has to communicate well or work under pressure. No greater pressure than being in front of a camera and reading lines. No greater communication challenge than telling old folks that migrants are coming for them.
- the confirmation hearing is just a show. There's not actually analysis or vetting going on. It's all performative. The Reps have the majority and they'll do whatever Trump asks. Hilarious to think that Hegseth being on Fox and friends is why he got confirmed haha. I mean, it's why he got nominated. How Trump saw him. But to think it made any difference in the hearing. Laughable.
It seems like you think he's qualified because of his lack of experience. His lack of qualifications makes him qualified. Oh, and he says things you agree with.
Not really seeing what makes him qualified even remotely.
I don't know the ins and outs of the job. I know damn near every other person in that role has had mountains more experience than Hegseth. Ignoring his alcoholic abusive past. Ignoring his concerning born again militant Christian views. Even then, I don't see his qualifications.
I don't know exactly what the CEO of Microsoft does day to day but I can tell you then guy that's only been an Office salesman for 10 years, or a guy that's only been an individual contributing software engineer, isn't qualified for the role.
I imagine running the military is like steering a massive ship. He could start fucking up immediately and we either won't know the damage for a while or there will be enough guardrails in place to limit the damage. Not like the entire military industrial complex and it's level of influence in our country isn't completely fucked already.
I know damn near every other person in that role has had mountains more experience than Hegseth.
People who only attained the rank of Lieutenant when they were in the military have also been appointed to the role. Strangely, I don't recall you or anyone else calling into question their lack of experience. Hegseth made Major, which is just about the median of military officer rank.
It seems like you think he's qualified because of his lack of experience. His lack of qualifications makes him qualified.
No, this is completely wrong. I'm saying he is qualified because of his experience and have cited his leadership as a Major. Being a Colonel or General doesn't add bonus points here, for me at least.
Not like the entire military industrial complex and it's level of influence in our country isn't completely fucked already.
You acknowledge that the military industrial complex is "completely fucked" but also seem to prefer the last 7 SecDefs who were sitting on the board of Raytheon or Lockheed or in a DC Think Tank prior to their appointment over Hegseth, an outsider. Do you want more of the same?

...and thinking Hegseth is qualified
Calling Kamala not qualified for VP, but thinking Hegseth is qualified
I mean, hypocrisy is nothing new for you all (see almost any other thread). But damn, you're speed running hypocrisy this time around.

Prior to his appointment, Hegseth had been making his rounds on various podcasts and talk shows making the case for his vision of the military. He's communicated it succinctly and eloquently to the point that people who are enlisting are attributing his proposed changes as reason for enlistment. And again, this month had the highest military recruitment that they've seen in 8 years. Some of that credit has to go to the work Hegseth has put in prior to and since his appointment. You can discount the importance of him being an effective communicator all you like, but Hegseth is already getting some of the results he promised.
As far as your concern about the recruitment issue you claim he'll be causing. A UCLA study has estimated there are over 15,000 transgenders serving in active duty and the reserves in all branches of the armed services. This month, the US Army reported that they are expecting 81,000 recruits to join over this fiscal year (again, just this single branch of the armed forces), which would be almost a 50% increase above last fiscal year.
The Marines did a massive study in 2015 comparing efficacy of male-only versus coed units, and the male-only units clearly outperformed the mixed units. If you want a maximally lethal combat force, then women need to be removed from infantry combat roles. It's politics that is keeping them there, not data.

Imagine, ranting about this
This is maybe the dumbest, most scientifically illiterate "argument" I've ever heard. Right up there with "how can climate change be real if I'm holding a snowball???"
Holy shit. You think it doesn't matter / has no effect because it's only 0.04% of the atmosphere?
Do you have even a basic understanding of chemistry? And we want to get rid of our education system? Christ...
2mg/L of cyanide has a moderate reaction. Greater than 3mg/L is death.
A pool is about 0.0003% chlorine. 0.0010% will be incredibly harmful to humans.
God damn, seriously one of the dumbest things I've ever seen posted here. Like insultingly stupid

Seriously, I'd get a refund from michigan because you clearly didn't get an education.
Woody is cork snorkeling hoot ?
He thinks he's so above it all..
But in reality, he's a simpleton.. ?
So easy to trigger ?
Dance lil puppet!! Dance !!! ?
Oh please, enlighten me. What is the masterful point made by this brilliant scientific mind?
And Axe, you posted something absolutely idiotic and I called it out for being idiotic. If your only response is "ha! You responded! I win!" you clearly had nothing to begin with.
Or here, how about this. Respond or react to my post. Be a good little monkey.

No defense of your idiotic climate change post. Got it. Wasn't really expecting one.

The video was 100% factual.. It just doesn't fit your warped sense of reality..
No one gives a fuck what you think. Do you not realize that?
You are a joke to most of us

imagine qualified Air Traffic Controllers werent hired on merit
being "too white" was the criteria that kicked them out
imagine that the accident today at Reagan Int / potomac river was wholly due to unqualified contollers?
it really is hard to believe Pete Buttigege was capable of cooking up this idea but here we are

and it has been known by some congress folks that that airport controller staff was short-staffed.
The one controller trying to handle the situation - was doing two jobs at the same time.
so STUPID.

dei has been the main focus of your dems the past four years.
As far as the tragic accident:
"
an. 31, 12:30 a.m. ESTThe FAA’s preliminary report on the incident noted that the staffing at the air traffic control tower was not “normal,” pointing to the fact that a single air traffic controller was handling both helicopter and plane traffic, the Associated Press reported.
However, the federal body’s assessment was refuted by an unnamed source cited by the AP who was familiar with the matter and said the staffing at the tower was at a normal level.
The New York Times reported that the handling of airplane traffic and helicopter traffic is usually handled by two separate controllers until 9.30 p.m. everyday.
However on Wednesday evening, an air traffic control supervisor merged the two jobs before 9:30 p.m. (the collision occurred shortly before 9 p.m. local time) and allowed one air traffic controller to leave early, the Times report added.
Jan. 31, 3:00 a.m. ESTA day before the collision, a similar accident was likely avoided in the same area after a passenger plane was forced to execute a “go-around maneuver” to prevent a collision with a military helicopter in the area, according to the Associated Press. Citing flight tracking data and air traffic controller logs, the AP reported that an Embraer E-175 regional jet attempting to land at the Reagan Airport had to pull out of its approach after being warned by its onboard automated collision avoidance system—but managed to land safely after a go-around."
