The Browns Board

  • Here's the latest: I know it's been beat to death and I know we have to almost identical threads. Don't know if Mike or Larry or Zombo would choose to combine them, I'll leave it up to you.

  • I'll post this again since we have two nearly identical threads. Just the latest on a story that's been beaten nearly to death but it is what it is.

Hypothetical: could the Browns cut their losses with Watson and make peace with Mayfield?

  • Please dump this dumb mother fucker already... This ship is sinking fast!

  • Haslam and Berry prove once again they aren't smarter than everyone else... I knew this was a bad deal from the get go... Even if they cut their losses... They're still screwed... We're not getting those picks back and Texas is laughing all the way to the draft board... Cleveland deserves better than this... Clearly Watson has lied... I say the season is lost before it even started.. LOL Browns... As a lifelong Browns fan.. I'm embarrassed for this team... This town and it's fans... I just don't see a championship happening in my lifetime ..
  • What's up dudes? I'm back for just a moment. Hope life is going well for everyone-we're expecting our second kiddo!

I'm not here to check-in to have a victory parade of how I told you all this was a bad idea, even though it was an absolute moronic decision. Let's break down what's happened, though, in the last several weeks

    • 2 more lawsuits are opened up, with one being admitted by Watson's lawyers as a person they did not know about. Red flag galore there.
    • We're at the point where the legal defense for Watson is using the classic "yeah he did it, but it wasn't illegal" argument.
    • Credible reporting has surfaced that he was willing to settle cases to play in Miami (something he has markedly said he wouldn't do). Read the tea leaves here, fellas-Cleveland wasn't even close to his first choice. He just took the money cause he knew the shit he didn't tell the NFL, the Browns, and even his lawyers.
    • Credible reporting is now that 66 massages were sought, and the Texans helped him get NDA's.

Do you really think this is everything? Do you think this dude wasn't doing shit in college when he was the #1 man on campus? That there likely isn't more "massages" before the Texans got involved?

The Haslams took a pathetic, half-brained, and short-sighted gamble and lost. The NFL, at a minimum, will suspend this dude for a year. There's absolutely no way they can't. So now the team is in a position of paying a sexual predator $45 million or so dollars who hasn't played a down in 2.5 years.

It's time to cut an run, and I hope the Browns realize that too. I'm guessing strongly good chunks of this information was not known by the NFL or the Browns. Use that as the basis to void his contract-unless they are the dumbest people on planet earth, I have to believe there is language to do so in his deal.

From here, fight like hell to get the first round picks back. If it ends up being true the Texans were knowingly helping Watson engage in this behavior, there may be a case to warrant the trade was not completed in good faith. Who knows, though, on that one. From here the team has to roll with Jacoby, Mayfield ain't coming back. Focus on 2023 as that QB class is loaded.

My position remains the same-so long as Watson sets food on the field I'm not watching. The thing is though, this isn't even the "tough" decision anymore. It's the common sense one, but unfortunately it's very unlikely to happen.

  • I don't know what the issue is, I've ordered massages off Craiglist before.  Only woke up missing a kidney the one time.

Somehow, that doesn’t sound like a happy ending…at least not for you!

  • Headline chasers anyone ?  I've always tried to look at the bright side but until this mess is done, well ?

A lot of worst case scenarios here, BROWNS stuck with DW and his monster contract.  DW never plays in the NFL again. BROWNS lose both DW and Mayfield and have to play 2022 with backup quarterbacks.

BROWNS miss the 2022 playoffs entirely.

BROWNS never fully recover from this DW fiasco.

After living through the Hue years this with the high expectations might be worse.

Yahoo Sports headline story June 8, 2022.   OMG.    😕

Report: Deshaun Watson met with at least 66 women for massages in 17 months; Texans may have 'enabled' behavior

Could be worse....two ?   Oh God I shutter to think about either.

OK could have woke up with crabs.   😆

  • Now this thread takes on a new meaning,  what has DW spent more on :

    A. WATSON HAS SPENT OVER 300K ON TEAMMATES...THUS FAR. WHY?

    -or-

    B. Massages for sex.    😆

My sentiments exactly. It's become worse than even I thought it was. I do wish there was a way to get those draft picks back...but I will bet there isn't. The texans will have none of it, I think. They had to be dancing in the stadium offices when they pulled that one off.

The Texans were rewarded heavily for this.  This Code of Conduct the NFL is investigating will only sock it to Cleveland not the team that actually employed Watson the time all this was going on.  Make sense?  It shouldn't.  Watson was the face of their franchise; and they sure seem pretty damn well informed on what he was doing in their community.

All the Browns had to do was keep the QB that won a playoff game as recently as January of 2021 (when healthy) for the 5th and final year of his contract they agreed/committed to.  If he ended up playing as poorly as he did last year, the Browns would be in ideal position to draft a QB in what is considered to be a pretty strong QB draft in 2023.

  • Texans have been added as defendant in Watson lawsuits

This has become a fun Gordian knot for The Shield

  • So since he signed the massive deal he’s had two new civil cases brought against him.  I don’t find this surprising at all.  In fact, I’d expect more to show up after his well publicized guaranteed contract that everyone had a problem with.

There were 22 when he was traded.  12 of 22 were brought forward to a grand jury for criminal charges and all of those failed to render an indictment. Can Florio explain the significance of that?

And We know the owners are upset especially the ones that are getting ready to pay “franchise QBs”

  • DeShaun Cosby.   😆

  • At this point, time to pray to the patron saint of bad football personnel decisions that eventually it is found out that Houston was so shady in their Watson situation that the NFL declares the trade null and void, the Browns trade picks are reinstated and the Browns move on to the 2022 season basically in tankish mode. (Not full tank mode, the roster is too good for that, but the Browns aren't sniffing the playoffs with Brissett as the starter. Hell, they probably weren't making the playoffs with Baker).

I have little to no faith that this will happen, though.

In for a penny, in for a pound.  We have to play this out.  We cannot just throw in our cards and quit.  We are too heavily invested.  And I'm not talking about the money, I'm talking about all of the draft picks.  We aren't just gonna flush those down the toilet.  We have to play this out to a logical conclusion, whatever that may wind up being, and not knee jerk anything.

Look at it this way, It's just the 21st Century Browns being the 21st Century Browns.

I'm afraid that there's not a whole bunch more we can do but play this thing out......and read the latest headlines  on the sports,  legal and latest joke pages.   🙂🙁

Sounds like the J Giles song... "No anchovies, please".   We may have ended up with a $200 million dollar bowling ball.

Looks like the Browns really didn't do "due diligence". Watson lied to them, and Berry is now chain smoking.  🙁  Cleveland's only hope is Goodell and the NFL step in and void the (remaining parts of) the deal.

Seriously, in the modern era of football,  this  level of sleaze-  assuming even 1\2 of the reports are correct- is unprecedented.  You'd have to go back decades and to a different sport (basketball) to find something similar.  I  won't name him because he's  dead, but the initials are WC.

When we first signed Watson, I was happy. I defended him. "Ok, he's  REALLY into massage girls, likes happy endings, and while inappropriate,  his behavior is not criminal. This attorney has a personal vendetta for him and is very good at coaching these women that they have been wronged"

The Browns said they vetted the hell out of the situation and that Watson was a good person and they wanted to build around him.

Watson said he did nothing wrong, and since we were in He Said / She Said territory, and there were no criminal charges ... I was all in on the new QB of the Cleveland Browns.

The NY Times article flipped things for me. I saw him as a different person: He manipulated the Texans, he lied to the Browns, and he lied to us at his press conference.

No one needs 66 different massage women in 17 months. No one needs a luxury hotel room where different massage girls are sent. No one needs a massage girl to sign a NDA unless creepy things are happening.

We traded our future away and paid $243 M guaranteed to a lying creep.

    Oh ... my Browns.

    The draft picks are gone.

But we can sue Watson for lying and then Jimmy can sell the team to a fucking hands off owner and let the football people run the team.

    He just keeps fucking up.

But that's probably not happening. We will probably have Briskett go 9-8 this year and then we will have to start letting some talent go because of Watson's back ended guaranteed contract and never get to the Super Bowl while we root for a team led by this creep.

    Oh ... my Browns ?

    Z

Well said! I remember thinking in the 80s (my Golden Era of following this team) that I would have plenty of time ahead to see my favorite team get to the Superbowl.  All of a sudden, I'm 58 years old wondering what happened to an 11-5 football team that won a playoff game as recently as January of 2021.   The same FO and owner that agreed to give Baker a 5th year suddenly came to the conclusion that last year's regular season was the tell-all about Baker's ability, Was it REALLY?  I mean a guy that threw 26 TD passes to only 8 INTs in his 3rd season throws 4 INTs on Christmas Day the next year.  Obviously Baker never lived up to the #1 overall pick expectations BUT the Browns did commit to a 5th year only to throw away THREE 1st round picks and more for a QB they didn't even come close to doing their due diligence studying.

Any of the 1st round QBs in 2023 or even Pickett in 2022 would have been way healthier to our cap.  Does anyone realize that Watson's last year in Houston he was #1 rated in so many different passing categories in the AFC/NFL?  But, the team around him was so bad none of it mattered and Houston went 4-12.  So now he's coming to the same kind of owner he's leaving.

I hope the NFL investigation starts to find enough information to contemplate punishment to the team Watson was actually employed by as the face of their team when all this was happening.  I think I heard the Texans went as far as booking a hotel room for at least 1 of Watson's massages.  Really?  Now that there was an owner willing to buy a swamp in alligator alley hoping it would save his franchise - I sincerely hope something is done about the Houston Texans capitalizing on all this when all of the wrong doing by Watson was under their watch.  If the NFL is going to investigate, Houston seems like a perfect place to find out what was going on with the Code of Conduct stuff while the NFL only seems focused on punishing the Browns.  Not that their stupidity in all this wasn't enough punishment.
