Could we mix in a 4-3?

we already run a 4-man line on passing downs. it doesn't work.

But those 4 guys are alwasy in pass rush mode, so to speak.

In Greythan's plan there, those OLB would really play DE in running plans. Results might not differ, but at least for some downs those guys would actually be setting up and attacking at the run, not just the pass.

  • do you think wimbley can hold the point of attack in the run game instead of getting pushed into the secondary?

Oh, I don't. I'd sooner do that w/ Williams at one DE and Willie at the other. Wimbley would be over on the bench if I did it.

  • leon williams? interesting. he might be better off in a situation where he doesn't have to think as much. using his brain certainly seems to be his weakness.

No, Corey Williams. Not Leon. His ass wouldn't see the field either.

  • then rogers and shaun smith would man the middle.

i think, among my other concerns, is that 3-4 OLB and 4-3 OLB are such different positions. in the 4-3, OLBs have to stop running backs and cover. they don't really rush the passer, which, despite their inability to do so, is what we've drafted our OLBs to do.

wimbley's a converted 4-3 DE. i think hall is, too, for that matter. our only natural linebackers of note are d'qwell, andra davis, leon williams and beau bell, and of those four, i only ever want to see two on the field. moreover, i only want to see bell to find out if he can even play.

a line of willie, corey williams, shaun rogers and shaun smith would likely stuff the run, but they'd never, ever get to the QB. i guess, though, they'd be doing one thing right, which is more than we're doing right now.

  • Williams might get to the QB. On passing downs you bring in Wimbley or Hall (or both to be your pass rushers).

Willie McGinist is a convered DE too (was a DE at USC). He also played it some in NE when they needed.

Not sure it would work, but hell, ain't like things are working now....lol.

    It's all hypathetical anyway.

What I do know is if I was running it, I sure wouldn't play this passive reactionary D they play now.

  • The point of my suggestion is you'd have McGinnest behind Wimbley on downs with higher running play probabilities. Again, the idea is freeing up our natural DT's (Rogers and Williams) to be the impact players (since our LB's aren't) as opposed to the reverse we're trying for in the 3-4.

  • we could also just switch to a one-gap 3-4 as opposed to a two-gap 3-4. either way, we need to be way more aggressive. i agree with you on that.

I like this thought & hadn't thought of it as an option before. Maybe Tucker (previously a DB coach) could work with Hall this offseason on his coverage ability and line him up on the opposite side behind Corey and have the same dynamic end, albeit in reverse. Jackson & Bell as the other two LBs? icon_question.gif
