Monday, May 15, 2023 - 01:02 PM.      Guardians have faith if Josh Naylor comes up in the eighth.

Josh Naylor the magic man from the 8th inning on.

May 14, 2023; Cleveland, Ohio, USA; Cleveland Guardians designated hitter Josh Naylor (22) rounds the bases after hitting a home run during the eighth inning against the Los Angeles Angels at Progressive Field.

Mandatory Credit: Ken Blaze-USA TODAY SportsHitting a game-ending home run in Major League Baseball is, pretty clearly, the best — not only because your team has won the game in the last inning in thrilling fashion but also because you have dealt a blow to your opponent. It's a blow to that team's record and to its psyche, and the impact can be observed as players walk off the field in solemn defeat.

Walk-off homers are no fun if you're on the business end of one. It's a real bummer.[MoreBallySports:... Home | News | Video]

Coming through with the big homer in the eighth inning hits the opponent a little differently, so to speak.

There's still hope to come back, or a lack of hopelessness, but there's also a rush of uncomfortable urgency — even panic. It's a different feeling, one of unsettling confusion.

What just happened? We were ahead (or tied), and now thanks to one swing we're behind with just three outs of offense to go. If we don't do something quick, we're going to lose.

This is how Cleveland Guardians slugger Josh Naylor made the Los Angeles Angels feel for three games in a row at Progressive Field over the weekend. Naylor remarkably hit a go-ahead home run in the bottom of the eighth inning on Friday night, on Saturday night and on Sunday afternoon for a wonderful trifecta.

Indians in a slump.

Indians in a slump.

Yes .... the Cleveland INDIANS are in a 2+ year slump since they won their last game.    Now the second place  Cleveland GUARDIANS  (-3.5) and  (20-23)  5-5 L10  are in a definite hitting slump this season playing in a whole lot of 1-2 run games.

That needs to improve to push them past Minnesota (24-20) into 1st place.  Now the 2022 Cleveland GUARDIANS   surprised everyone everyone last season going  (92-70  +22)  and winning the AL Central Championship   .

GO GUARDIANS   ...... even though we say INDIANS  in this house.

NEW YORK -- Saturday’s game between the Guardians and Mets was postponed due to rain. The two teams will play a split doubleheader on Sunday at Citi Field, with Game 1 at 1:40 pm  and  Game 2 scheduled for 7:10 pm.

In the afternoon affair, right-hander Tanner Bibee will take the mound for Cleveland. In his last start against the Angels on May 14, Bibee pitched his best game of the season, throwing 7 2/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out seven. He ended up with a no-decision in a 4-3 victory.

[mjp28]

~  And in Game 2  at about  7 pm  on ESPN.  ~

Right-hander Shane Bieber will pitch the nightcap for Cleveland. He hopes to pitch better than he did in his last start this past Tuesday against the White Sox, in which he lasted 4 2/3 innings and allowed five earned runs on 12 hits.

The Guardians look to rebound after losing to New York, 10-9, in 10 innings on Friday night. It was Cleveland’s fourth walk-off loss of the season.

Fans holding paid tickets for the game originally scheduled to be played on Saturday may use them for the rescheduled game on Sunday at 1:40 p.m.

Season Ticket Members may exchange their May 20 tickets for a 2023 regular-season game at Citi Field (excluding June 13-14 Subway Series vs. Yankees), subject to availability, up until May 21 at 10 a.m.
