The State of the 2024 Browns: Quarterbacks
-
I know that he's not trying to get hurt on purpose so that he can have operations, go through rehab and hold a clipboard while being paid. But really, what makes him think that he should be taking on tacklers? Does he think that it's his job to do that? If so, then he needs to be tutored. We have guys that are supposed to fight for extra yards. They're called receivers and running backs. The starting QB is 'important on another level' important to the team / organization. If he gets hurt, the team literally goes into the shitter. How we won some games last year with our dumpster fire at QB is truly amazing.
I understand that many teams use their franchise QB to get yardage with his legs. But I don't think that it's smart. I want my QB to play like John Elway. Stay in the play and try to get the ball passed. Run as a last resort, or if the seas part and you have open field in front of you...but get down in advance of any chance of contact.
I hear ya! If I was his QB Coach - aside from that being a disaster; I would make sure he sees 1 video like this per day. I would bully his subconscious until it's conscious. BTW, I can tell the West Virginia QB is no longer Major Harris.
I hear ya! If I was his.....
Last year Stef came out in support of Watson saying stuff like, That's how he plays the game! 100% effort. Which is a nice sentiment. But it's outdated when it comes to QB's running with the ball. They came out with this rule a while back so that the QB can give himself up and slide. At which point nobody can hit him. And over the years they've come up with other rules to try and protect the QB. These rules were thunk up because the NFL noticed that they were having a problem. Marque teams were going straight into the shitter because their QB's were getting injured. The NFL was changing rules for DB's so that receivers could catch more passes and thus more offense and more scoring. But really that just increased the importance of the QB even more.
The QB has always been the most important guy in a football organization. Our last championship came because the QB, Frank Ryan, threw 3 TD passes. And championships before that were from Otto Graham. Ryan wasn't as good as Graham...thus just the one championship, while having the better RB (Jim Brown). Bart Star & Johnny Unitas combined for 9 championships. Sid Luckman & Joe Montana combined for 8. Brady, of course, 7 championships.
The QB is the most important player in any team sport that I can think of. They've enacted rules designed specifically to protect this 'most important' player. USE THEM! I don't wanna hear the coach say, That's how he plays the game. 100% effort. Fuck No. Let's use 100% SMARTS! The league came up with the slide rule because they know how 100% screwed you are if your QB gets hurt. Why have our guys just plain Not Understood that? I mean, do they need a brick shithouse to fall on them? Is it not unlike using your Queen to plod around the chessboard trying to kill pawns?

Not to get in to Watson. I think we all know the status of that. I'll just say I think he can be a top tier QB.
After that, I think we are solid with Winston and Huntley in the back-up roles. I don't think we could do much better in that department. I will say that Robinson could be kept as the 3rd QB. I think Huntley could be used as trade bait if some other team deems it necessary to bring in more help at QB. Huntley is more of a back-up QB than a 3rd QB.

Really?
I mean, I hope you are right. I hope he gets back to his 2018-2020 form, when he was easily a top 5 NFL QB. But man, three seasons have come and gone, he's still hated throughout the NFL (and a sizable portion of the Browns fanbase), he's coming off a throwing shoulder injury and we'll see if the Browns have actually made the offense fit his skill-set.
We'll see soon enough, but I'm not optimistic we'll ever see THAT Watson again.

I think the hate factor is overblown. I don't think most fans care anymore. The loudest doesn't make a majority.
Only 2 seasons have passed. The first was the suspension season and last season was derailed with an injury.

Three seasons have passed since his last really good season in 2020.
He sat out 2021 trying to get traded from Houston. He got traded to the Browns prior to the 2022 season, sat out 11 games via the suspension, then played the final six. Started six games last season.

I don't care about seasons he had elsewhere. I am commenting on him being a Brown's player.

Sure he's hated in Houston...but I don't know how much the rest of the NFL gives him a 2nd thought anymore. As for the Browns fans that don't like him / hate him, it's up to them to find a way through this. Perhaps they take a hiatus from the Browns / football until his time in Cleveland is over. Me, I don't particularly like him. And I've played team sports with a guy (or 2) that I didn't particularly like...but that means nothing when you're playing the game. At that point it's more like war...and they're on your side. And even if you don't like him, if he's good, you don't want him traded.
Having said that, if the guy doesn't play well (or just plain stinks), then that's a different way to 'not like him'. And if that's the case then I don't care if the guy is Tim Tebow (an honest to God good guy), I'd want him off the team.

My point regarding that is that most players, regardless of sport, don't like being "the bad guy".
Most players aren't built to be Bill Laimbeer or Draymond Green...
It can affect players.

My current opinion of Watson is that he doesn't fit either category. He doesn't revel in being the bad guy. And I don't think he has the sense to feel the self disappointment that an actual good guy would feel. I think that he feels that if people don't like him for what he's done, then it's their job to get over it. And in reality, it is. I mean, guys aren't brought to our team to sing in the church choir. - Many years ago I was talking to the company VP and his wife at a company picnic. He told me that they knew Bill Nelson. He said that he really wasn't a super nice guy. But his wife chimed in and said, actually he was kind of an ass. The kind of sad, bottom line for us is can he play well and win football games.

Hey! I'm in that boat. I don't care at all about what he did off the field. If Chairman Mao could rush for 2000 yards, I'd be calling for us to draft him. Problem is that I don't think his shoulder is ever going to be the same.

That "Yeah, it can affect good guys." you added to Dutch's comment had me spittin up coffee...

I just saw this myself and read the little blurb in the Athletic about it. They’re speculating they may try to trade for an experienced OLineman.

I would rather trade Huntly and keep DTR. But if we tried to stash him on the PS. would he make it through waivers ?
