It's a cluster fuck of gerrymandered districts that constantly get shot down and redrawn now. It's a broken system that allows the party in power to stack the deck and stay in power.

Why would I care about "outside special interest funding" if that special interest is just trying to end gerrymandering across the country?

    1. Currently members of our government are made up of the redistricting commission. I do not think it should change. Usually I am against career politicians. But in this we need government officials making these decisions not the average voter. It's like getting a haircut from someone who has never cut hair before. Not a good idea. - Dublin, 43017
    2. Politicians who know the constitution and law should decide the electoral map changes. Otherwise, segments of the population who have a strong influence on the economy such as farmers would be underrepresented because the democrat "citizens" behind issue 1 would give more weight to the urban areas. - Columbus, 43219
    3. We are changing the constitution of the state. it is more than just the gerrymandering issue. - Columbus, 43235
    4. Commission members and the judges are selected not elected. Voters out of the mix. - Brecksville, 44141
    5. Why change it? I think democratic leaders in Ohio needs to work a little bit harder on getting votes. I never see them around when election season comes. They need to be seen more and heard more if they want my vote. I see Republicans all over the place and that's why Ohio has become a red state. If democrats want it bad enough to be elected they need to get down with the people. - St. Louisville, 43071
    6. It could affect the rural counties in a damaging way. I do not like the idea that I have no access to the members of the committee on the proposed districting board. - Fairborn, 45324
    7. No civilians will be vetted like the elected politicians.- Woodstock, 43084
    8. It's a scheme to get the Democrats 2 more seats in the US House. Proportional representation doesn't work with single member districts. - Columbus, 43229
    9. Democratic power grab funded by outside money. -Gahanna, 43230
    10. It puts unelected bureaucrats into political power who are not accountable to anyone and never be voted out by citizens of the state of Ohio. Democrats, how is unelected third-party saving democracy? Vote No on 1! - Columbus, 43214

You gotta admit the wording of the amendment leads to questions that aren’t immediately find-outable.

In layman’s terms, and assuming l understand the gist of the amendment, rather than have our elected officials do the gerrymandering, we’re going to appoint a panel of 15 people to do it instead, and those people will consist of republicans, democrats and independents, and what they say goes and that’s just how it’ll be.

I don’t expect it will pass. Every hardcore republican and democrat voter is going to want to know how many of their party will be involved in this panel, and what kind of independents and how many of those?

I agree gerrymandering is lame. At the very least it’s one of the many instances where you’re disappointed in your elected officials because, come on guys, this is what l’m paying you for?

I don’t think Issue 1  is the solution we will agree on though.

It's written confusingly on purpose by Republicans trying to preserve their power grab.

The question you ask, that information is available. There's a lengthy, thought out process to how the committee will be selected. It'll be 5 each D, R, and I. Vetted by returned judges.

As long as politicians have the ability to redraw districts they will continue to take advantage of the system and stack the deck. Republicans have absolutely been bigger offenders here recently, especially in Ohio, but both parties can and have done it. This is a common sense measure to remove that power grab.

RE: The bold...  I disagree... I expect it to pass, rather easily. I couldn't find the number, but I'm sure it was in the 100s of thousands of signatures to get Issue 1 on the ballot in the first place. The number of Ohioans who are totally fed up with the repeated bullshit of Republicans drawing up gerrymandered districts- only to have them repeatedly get shot down by the Ohio Supreme Court is legion. The howling from the State GOP officeholders tells me everything I need to know. As Woody posted...  It's written confusingly on purpose by Republicans trying to preserve their power grab. IIRC, the final wording of the ballot language wound up being contested in court- more than once.

BTW, I've heard somewhere the Republicans are already planning on getting another amendment on the Ballot next year to try and repeal Issue 1, assuming it passes. Poor little guys having a hissy fit. ?

Jax, it's a hard no- only if you're a hard core Card Carrying member of the GOP...  Got an interesting flyer in the mail yesterday from the retired Chief Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court. (supporting Issue 1 BTW) The gerrymandered districts the Republicans drew up were rejected by the court SEVEN stinking times over the years. IIRC, Ohio voters passed initiatives a couple times to try and curtail the republican dominated redistricting's commission's bullshit- and It didn't work.

So Welcome to nuclear Issue 1, taking redistricting out of the hands of politicians. From my POV- it was time to tell DeWine and the other GOP members on the commission to go pound salt. Hardly surprising that they'd draw up districts favoring their political pals. Ever take a look at what Jim Jordan's district looks like? I have.   ?

You guys are so quick to give away our freedoms and protection.

We know Republicans aren't behind it because they're currently behind fighting it and continuing to gerrymander.

The folks will be vetted by a committee of retired judges. The group will be split evenly across party lines.

The current system of "accountability" is a joke. The people in charge are stacking the deck and making it increasingly difficult to hold them accountable (the gerrymandering). Having fair districts isn't something that should be up to politicians. They should just be a fact of life.

Honestly surprising to me that conservatives have convinced the base to essentially be pro gerrymandering. But I imagine they realize they're voting more to keep Republicans with an advantage and not really concerning themselves about how.

For the record I don't care which party this would or wouldn't benefit. I see it as an obvious change that needs to happen. Like ranked choice voting and fixing our electoral college

  • Just wondering if they're many things as useless as premature poll/prognosis/speculation?

  • It's always going to be considered gerrymandering by the side with less power.

Giving in to fear mongering as always.

I think it will pass and it's a huge mistake.

You guys don't know who's behind it, what if it's a conservative special interest group? What if the Republicans want it to pass?

Bleed gets it, you don't just put people in charge you know nothing about and haven't been voted in.

Right now our elected officials are held accountable, after this they will not be.(whoever they will be)

That's what makes your opinion worthless.

  • I voted for every Repub except for 2 in my district and no on everything else.

Except .... No ... That's not how this works.

You're dismissing everything as gerrymandering so you can defend... Gerrymandering.

Look, man, if you only goal is to vote for whatever gives Republicans the most power, regardless of any fairness or anything else, then that's your choice. Just don't pretend you're doing anything more than that.
