Who Are You Taking For Browns at #2?

Browns pegged as ideal fit for NFL draft's most controversial player

Many within the Cleveland Browns fanbase do not like Shedeur Sanders, predominantly because of his dad and little to do with his play, but he may just be their ideal player in the 2025 NFL draft.

.......Sanders’ accuracy and ability to play in structure may just fit him in like a glove with head coach Kevin Stefanski.  ( I like a QB wants to play 'in structure' rather than one that goes off script at the drop of a hat )

PFF’s Jordan Plocher and Josh Liskiewitz agree. In their article pairing one prospect for each of the 32 NFL teams, it was Sanders who fell into the most ideal fit for the Browns. Here is what they had to say:

“Everyone in Cleveland would prefer to just sweep the whole Deshaun Watson experiment under the rug and move on. The Sheduer Sanders selection allows the team, the fans and the city to move on toward the future. Sanders is a highly accurate quarterback, as his 81.6 adjusted completion percentage ranked No.1 among FBS quarterbacks with an 8.0-yard average depth of target. Sanders is a multiple-year starter who should be able to start from the beginning of his career if Watson starts the season on the physically unable to perform list.”

There is no doubt that Sanders is the most accurate quarterback in the class, and by a comfortable margin. According to Daft on Draft’s Weighted On-Target Percentage metric, Sanders leads the class with a number of 73.26 percent. Going back to last year, this would have been the second-highest in last year’s class, behind only the likely NFL Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels.

--------  My 2 cents...He will go to the team with the #1 pick.

My business partner asked me a question when I was showing him the outline of my Milroe article - "Why Sanders?".

He has the highest floor in this draft. For me, it's that simple.  If you *have* to draft a QB, it's the sensible choice.   If the rest of the circus could be avoided, that sure would be a great bonus.

  • Have 2 Colorado players ever been taken 1 & 2 in the draft?

I think it has only happened three times: Michigan State (1967), Nebraska (1984) and Penn State (2000).

which, btw, I've drafted my own players in the past, a few times I won, but you have never had a team in the Brownsboard fantasy football leagues.

Join up, have a team, show us what you can do, it would be fun beating you.

I try to, didn't get to it this past season.

I have drafted my own players for years - won at least once. But you have never had a team in the Brownsboard fantasy football leagues that I know of.

Do it. Show us what you got - we promise to draft our players, and it will be great fun beating you. Maybe one of the commishes can send you a link to make it easier.

Thanks.  But again, I'm good.  That time invested can be better spent elsewhere by me on other football projects.

OK, I just hope it isn't because you can't handle my team beating yours.

My #2 team did hit on hard times. Just a thought.

Let me ask your opinion here and there's no right or wrong answer.  If they did that, that means Justin Fields would be available (they were 4-2 when he was starting) should we sign him for the same kind of money he agreed to last year and then draft a mid round QB?

I don’t know if he would have success in this offense.  But I’d design an offense where he’s out of the pocket playing with reckless abandon and that’s easier to swallow if he’s not given a long term high dollar contract.

It is not a terrible option.

  • Every year that you don't have your intended QB of the future on your roster is just another wasted year.

You can draft the best edge rusher in the history of the game....but if you don't have a QB, you can't win.  And that great edge rusher is just going to want to leave your team.

Good points. I don't know how he'll do but the supply of QBs in this draft is kind of scary which means desperate teams will be reaching.

These were Justin Fields' stats in (2019) his 2nd to last season at Ohio State (the year before he led them to the National Championship game vrs Bama).  A ratio of 41 TD passes to 3 INTs tops anyone in this draft class.  But the next year that ratio dropped to 22:6 - but they made it the the BCS Championship Game.

    Passing
G Att Comp Pct. Yards Yards/Att TD Int Rating Att/G Yards/G
    14 354 238 67.2 3273 9.2 41 3 181.43 25.3 233.8

That was 2 years before he experience the same type of culture shock in Chicago that Caleb Williams would later experience.

I'm only bringing Fields up as a potential veteran FA veteran while the Browns plan to draft a rookie QB somewhere.

  • He'd be better than most options I've seen.

Steelers really going after Sanders after they tried getting Stafford though?

I know we need a QB but even the best qb isn't going to win when everyone around him can't do their part.

I still like the idea of getting the best trench guys we can and finding a competent enough qb until someone good comes along.

  • The absolute last thing I would want is for Justin Fields to try and play in the Stefanski offense, or for Stefanski to try again to change everything for his RPO QB.

I'm actually shocked that people can watch what just happened with this team to only want to go out and do it immediately again.

Fields played in a run-heavy offense with elements of the QB centric run sprinkled in similar to some of the designs I broke down when Brissett was our starting QB.

To say that Fields and Watson are one in the same is short-sighted.

Is he a QB who stands in the pocket, reads defenses and goes through progressions well, or is he someone who tends to be a one read then run guy? Because Watson wasn’t that guy in Houston, but he kind of regressed to that in Cleveland

Hey I'd be open to any ideas you have about what veteran QB can help us. Until then, let me explain the reality we're up against.

The Gary Kubiak offense Stefanski WANTS to run here doesn't have a LT and rarely has a healthy starting RT.  Bitonio is starting his 12th season at LG (sounding very much like the current situation is enticing him to retire). The backup/swing Tackle Dawand Jones is 2 for 2 showing up way overweight and out of shape leading to 2 consecutive IR appearances. We do have a percentage of Nick Chubb though.  While Stefanski has extensive experience and 2 Coach of the Year honors (with Baker as his QB 1 year and 5 different QBs another year) most of his prior NFL experience was limited to playing for 1 team indoors in Minnesota.  Toward the end, Minnesota had to bring Kubiak back as a consultant to Stefanski when Minnesota's offense was struggling.  His college experience was playing Safety at Penn.

Anyway, when a guy can throw 41 TDs to just 3 INTs 1 year at Ohio State - there's some clay to mold that the serial QB killers in Chicago weren't capable of tapping.  With the current reality of this offense - WHAT available veteran QB out there wants any part of playing QB aside from Flacco maybe.  There is no fit for this out there.  I remember people informing me it's okay they got rid of Flacco; because him doing well would only make Watson's situation worse with the fanbase.  I know we remember these conversations guys. We were literally talking about Watson's potential feelings and confidence.

I'm just trying to think of what veteran QB that could be a fit for the unfair situation before we throw an inexperienced rookie QB out there. It had to be a guy that can at least move. Like I said, Pittsburgh was 4-2 with Fields starting with a very affordable contract I might add.  He is and remains the young veteran QB I'd like to see us take a shot at until the QB we draft is ready to go.  Maybe our problem is we don't have a coaching staff that can adapt to the talent of the QB?  If we can't do it with a 230 million $ guarantee at QB who succeeded at Clemson and Houston before coming to this offense - who can we do it with?  Kubiak's Offense borrows and blends a lot of principles from Dan Reeves and Mike Shanahan that John Elway thrived in when Kubiak was his backup QB.  Elway was running a 4.5 coming out of Stanford so a cement shoe'd QB doesn't have to be a pre-requisite. A slow moving QB could be a reminder of what Joe Flacco's last game looked like here when the pass pro was overwhelmed.

I'm open to hearing ideas from others about what veteran QBs we should be thinking about to keep us from hurrying a QB we draft out there before he's ready....
